NFL Draft: Day 2, Rounds 2-3 Thread

The quarterback is the most important position on the team. What if Tom Brady gets hurt? He was sacked way too many times last year. They will then need a backup for Mallet. Look at all the teams that are struggling year after year because there is a continuous turnstile at the QB position. These teams go nowhere, and year after year blow 1st round draft picks for finding that 'franchise' quarterback. No way teams like Houston, Tampa Bay or even Arizona let him fall through their hands if he is in the 3rd round.

I would have loved to see more depth at the O line or TE, but the reality is that Brady maybe has 2 elite years left in him because of his age. What if the Patriots win the superbowl in the next 1-2 years and Brady decides to retire on top and not play anymore? Mallet might be the answer, but if he gets moved, then the Patriots will be stuck for years trying to find someone.

Better to use a very late 2nd round pick (its almost a 3rd rounder) on a potential heir to Brady. Study the system for 2-3 years and then hopefully he has the tools to be the next great QB. I do not know much about Garoppollo, but there were talks about him being taken in the last 1st round by some teams that would move up from the second round to get him. Perhaps this being a 'deep' draft, made him fall.

Perhaps there is not much difference in talent from late second round to end of 3rd round because of this 'deep' draft and thus the TE and OL can be addressed in the 3rd-4th round.

It seems ESPN has given up on covering the draft. Nothing but commercials

BB didn't spend all that time working out QB's for shyts and giggles. This isn't surprising at all.

Bottom line is the Pats evidently have put a high value on the next QB in line. Fans can hate the pick or disagree all they want but it doesn't change the fact that Brady will eventually retire and they plan to be ready when he does for another decade of quality of football.

a 6' 2" tortoise (4.96 forty)

this clown would not have even been drafted when Brady was picked in the sixth round...a second round pick on THIS bust waiting to happen?...six foot two...jeezus krist, we drafted Jimmy Clausen
You're gonna look silly when we deal him and Mallett for 2 1st round picks.

I could be talked into the Easley pick. I hate this one.

I read Reiss's spoiler tweet about Grap being the pick and was immediately incensed. Guess I'm not ready for the end of the Brady era and am in denial. Anyone know a good football therapist?

Right now I'm of the mind that this kid could be this team's version of Steve Young and I'd still not be on board for the end of Brady.

At least he seemed to be well-spoken and genuine in the post-pick interview.

when it comes to some WR help you gotta start somewhere.......

If they think he could be Brady's heir I am fine with the pick, if they just think he's a 4 year backup ala Mallett then it's a waste. From what I gather on twitter, it's the former.

A back-up QB isn't a waste - if it's a guy like Hoyer, you're paying 3+ million a year for him. A guy like Mallett is still on his rookie deal. You NEED someone who can come in and keep you competitive in case of a short-term injury. Having that through the draft is a good thing.

That said, I'm scratching my head, because OL and TE...Crockett Gilmore and/or Trey Burton for TE, maybe?

Martin, Swanson, Ikard and Stork are all still there at C.
Yankey, Dozier and a bunch of G's are there, too.

Or maybe we sign Keller and Davin Joseph...

Isn't that as useful as saying the Pats would have taken Clowney if he had been there at 29?

There's a rumor that they'd have taken Andrew Luck if he'd have fallen to them in 2012.

like bedard said..what rookie is going to come in here and beat out who we have right now on the roster?

I wish the posters here put together the team...SB wins every year son

Well, it wouldn't be a Patriot draft unless we were all pissed off by a pick, I guess.

I can't remember the last pick where a majority of the people on this board actually liked in the hours/days after the pick. At least not in rounds 2-5. I know Jones and Hightower had the majority approval.

IMO Martavis Bryant >>> Coleman
I could go either way honestly. Bryant has hardly any production but seems to have more raw tools. Coleman has the production. I will
Be happy with either. not before the late 4th tho.

I would rather have us draft in the second round a player that can help us this year rather than draft a player who won't see the field for at least three more years. Let's hope the 3rd round pick will have an immediate impact.

This just in: not a single poster picked Jimmy Garoppolo in the draft board prediction contest. :)

Something must be in works with Mallet since Houston is avoiding QBs like the plague in the draft...Either that or I am just trying to justify the high QB/Grappolo pick...

I'm thinking Justin Rodgers in the 4th or 5th for TE out of California.

According to Lindy's, he ran a 4.78 not a 4.96. That is as good or better as any of the top QBs other than Manziel and Bridgewater.
Garropolo ran a 4.94 at the combine. That being said, he's a POCKET QB,

Why do people keep talking about need? They don't draft according to need they draft on player rankings. If you're gonna be upset about something be upset that they rated Garafalo higher than another player, but don't expect them to say "Let's pass on a guy we have as the highest rated player on our board to pick someone at a position we consider a need"

They never do that.
