NFL Draft: Day 2, Rounds 2-3 Thread

For QBs I would like to see Cornell's Jeff Matthews or West Texas' Dustin Vaughn as 7ths or UDFAs after the draft ends.

Too early to start grooming a QB IMO, we can wait on that for another draft.

Wow, I am still dancing with excitement over the Easley pick that it's hard for me to concentrate on the next 2 days.. I'll try my best to give input.

If we are going to nab any of the Top TE's in the draft that have been discussed over and over on these boards for months, tonight is the night. There are reports that many teams are discussing trade into the top 40... of course these reports are to be taken with a grain of salt but, it's fun to ponder. Perhaps the Patriots move up to nab ASJ? Time will tell.

I'm beginning to have a feeling tho, that Amaro is going to be our guy. Pre combine it seemed every TE needy team would be in a battle to acquire Amaro..but since his pedestrian combine, Amaro has been like the lonely kid at the lunch table...no one is talking about him, no one cares... meanwhile Niklas and CJF and ASJ have consistently been in the spotlight (for good and bad reasons).

in the 3rd... I am envisioning a reach, perhaps I am just traumatized from the 2 past drafts.. but names like Christian Jones, Zach Fulton, Telvin Smith, Vinnie Sunseri are popping out at me. I hope I am wrong... but I'll revisit this post to see...

Have a great rd2 ladies and gents!

I seem to be in the minority, but I'm all for a round 3 QB to groom for a year.

I'm happy to take a developmental/backup QB but not in rounds 2-3. If we actually think he could develop into Brady's heir then I'm more convinced. But the draft is the deepest in years and using the early rounds to draft a player who in all likelihood will not play a single snap the next few years doesn't seem a good use of resources.

I'm hoping it still means Mallett gets traded

I disagree. If you are the pats and you are really high on a QB in this year's draft and believe the next aaron rodgers is out there, you draft him and worry about when you will play him later.

I would not mind taking a QB if we did not have other pressing needs. We do.

We need a TE (even if Keller signs) & we need interior OL. Those are the 2 things i wanna see tonight.

Second round guys: ASJ, Amaro, Martin & Richberg
Also take for value if they fall: Tuitt, Robinson, Latimore, Bitinio (lol,, who knows)

Second round guys: Niklas, CJF, Swanson - C, Jackson - G, Turner - G
Also take for value if they fall: C.Jones - LB, Flemming - OT, Borland - LB

So you're saying Broncos fans are stunningly shortsighted?

I'd say that they are being far more realistic, actually. They've got their backup, and they know, just as we should all be recognizing, that it's SB or bust and SB isn't happening if the backup is under center.

People here have lost their minds. To read some of the posts on this topic (in some of the many Mallett threads), you'd think that there was no grasping the Patriots offense without 8 years of apprenticeship.

My favorite was the Mallet for #33 posts hahahaha

I know this is a common opinion, but it still floors me. Why is a quarterback's health imagined to be all or nothing? What if your quarterback is knocked out for PART of the season, but can return? It happened to Aaron Rogers last year, and with no quality backup the Packers lost a whole string of games in his absence.

didn't they spend a #2 on Osweiler?

Why would they discuss it?

To be fair to folks here, the Donkeys have drafted two backup QBs in the last two seasons, both of whom are signed through 2015.

Niklas and Fiedorowicz are just guys. Sefarian-Jenkins or Amaro (who are complete opposites) may be worth a selection if they're available at the end of the round but in a good TE draft guys like Niklas and Fiedorowicz would be mid-round picks. They don't mitigate losing Gronk at all because they're massive dropoffs from Gronk.

I don't see the Patriots picking one of them (or even ASJ/Amaro) over a potential starter on the interior offensive line, for instance.
I think that the belief that this draft is weak at the TE position is grossly exaggerated, there is plenty of talent at the TE position, and Niklas and CJF would be selected in the first four rounds of just about any draft. They are both very talented, had good college production and impressive workout numbers.

Have you seen his play action fake handoffs. He just waves the ball in the general direction of the RB. Terrible. Keith Wenning, on the other hand, has outstanding fakes.
That is a player we should be targeting, will be available late and has good upside to at least develop into a long term backup QB.

Brian Hoyer was a better QB than Ryan Mallett. BB cut Hoyer and kept Mallett. Apparently BB didn't get the "Gotta keep the guy!" memo.

The myth that the Patriots need a backup steeped in Patriots experience is just that. Guys like Cassel and Davey destroyed that myth a long time ago.

He would be a MONSTER in this offense. Brady would have to clean out his jock if we drafted Matthews.
I really want to like Matthews but I just cannot, his tape just does not do much for me.
