Tom Curran: Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

I disagree. I don't think that a back up QB is worth a 3rd pick for one year. With a 3rd rounder we could either get a back up QB for the next 4 years or we could improve another part of the team, like get a center or a receiver.

Then they have to use a pick for a QB, as I said, not worth it. If it isn't a 2nd or the highest possible 3rd they should hang on to him and try to re-sign him.

I completely agree, the lowest pick I would trade Mallett for is #65 other than that I would just have him play out his contract. This is going to be the deepest UDFA market in a decade and we do not have the type of needs that make us desperate for draft picks.

Like I said in the other Mallett thread - I still don't get the infatuation with the idea that Mallett has to be sent packing....

I don't think he has to be sent packing at all, however if they get a good offer forr him then make the deal. I would hold out for the 2nd or a really high 3rd but nothing less.

IF I were the Patriots and Texans wanted Mallett and they wouldnt give up their second, then I would ask for their 3rd and 5th picks this year OR Their 3rd rounder next year with a chance for it to go to 1st round and a 5th rounder this year.

What are you responding to?

I wrote that he's not worth trading if you don't give up a mid 2nd to early 3rd.

If no one wants to give more than that, you hold onto him.

That's what I wrote.

Not in the post I quoted.

His value is mid. 2nd to early 3rd.

ESPN's Ed Werder stated on SportsCenter Friday that he is "told" Ryan Mallett is "not available" for trade.

The Texans were rumored to be discussing a trade for Mallett with the Patriots on Thursday. So far, nothing has happened on that front, and the buzz has died down. These things tend to be fluid, of course, so we're not ruling out a Mallett trade to Houston, where new coach Bill O'Brien has a history with Mallett from New England, and currently has a pretty glaring quarterback need.

This is the, what, umpteenth time there's been rumors of Mallett being traded that turned out to be bunk? Why do we keep buying them?

If it doesn't really help them this year I don't want it, all that does is cause them to have to fill a hole now while waiting for the reward a year down the road. If they got a top OL/LB/or TE for him as a 2nd round or high 3rd round pick then it would be worth it and they could draft a back-up late and maybe add a free agent or release this summer, but if there is no pay-off now then it isn't worth doing.

I have no idea. I would love to trade Mallett to get some more picks. Will he be traded? I have no clue, we shall see.

I think we're going to use a pick today or tomorrow on a QB anyway. Mallett's gone next year. I imagine BB would prefer to have someone in the pipeline when Mallett goes. Plus now we even may have the option of going after Hoyer or Cassel. It would probably be dirt cheap too. Cleveland & Minny chose QBs yesterday. So those guys are currently on overly crowded depth charts.

I don't know about that. He traded Bledsoe before he had a decent, experienced backup on the roster.

Damon Huard was on the team prior to Bledsoe being traded.

Seems like there's a lot of buzz (some here, some over at ESPN Boston) made of the importance of keeping Mallett on the Patriots this season, as he is the most viable backup to Brady that we can realistically have. I don't disagree with that sentiment.

However, Mallett isn't going to be our post-Brady QB - he'll be around 29 by that time, and we all know (sadly) it's right about that time to start thinking about the future at QB.

A guy like AJ Mcarron - a smart, hard-working kid who played in a pro-style offense for someone who is good friends with Belichick - could very well come in and at least prove a viable back-up in his first year, if not the future starter. Oddly enough, draft reports on him seem pretty similar to when Brady was coming out - high football IQ, good on the short to medium routes, tough competitor and good leader, but average build and not a very strong arm. Not saying he's going to end up like Brady, but I think he has a chance to be a starter in the right system.

My thinking is that the Texans pick a non-QB to start the 2nd round, then wait to see who's left at QB to start the 3rd round. If they don't go QB in the 3rd and Mcarron is on the board when the Patriots want him (end of the 3rd round, or 4th round), then they snag him and send Mallett to Houston for a late pick this year and a conditional pick next year.

This isn't what I'm hoping for necessarily -- I would rather grab someone like Tajh Boyd in the 5th round -- but if we do trade Mallett we'll need a more NFL-ready rookie, and I think Mcarron is just that given the offense he played in and the number of big games he played in.

I don't believe there is any way Belichick trades Mallett unless he gets something good for him, he's not going to do it just to do it. It's hard to say whether they will take a QB in this draft but it would certainly become a need and priority if they did trade Mallett because Cassell and Hoyer are under contract.

Is it too late to trade Mallett for a first rounder this year?

I think you're right, but I could see a scenario where, if they like Carr or McCarron but don't LOVE them, they could view Mallett as their insurance policy. So basically, they fill another need (of which they still have many) with 33, then if Carr or McCarron happens to fall to 65 they take them. If they don't, they grab Mallett from New England for 65.

I don't see them taking a QB with their 2nd (draft) and 3rd (trade for Mallett) round picks. They either make a deal with NE or they take a QB with their 2nd rounder. Taking 2 QBs in rounds 2 and 3 is never going to happen

Yes, it hurts his value...slightly. But teams trade for guys with one year left all the time. Then extend or rework the contract.
Oh, absolutely teams trade for guys with 1 year left on their contract all the time - but that doesn't change the fact that having only 1 year left is something which hurts, not helps, Mallett's trade value.

I think everyone misunderstood the headlines.
I think it meant the stupid rumors of Mallet being traded are almost over and in another day or 2 they will stop.
Then they will start up again saying he will be traded for a 2015 first.

I think you are one round off. Mid 3rd at best, IMO.
Probably, but if you trade Mallett for a pick, pick a QB and hold your breath that Brady doesn't even catch a cold this year, if that happens you are ahead of the game because next years backup has a year in the system.
Of course since we cant see the future it would be too risky to be sensible.
