Seems like there's a lot of buzz (some here, some over at ESPN Boston) made of the importance of keeping Mallett on the Patriots this season, as he is the most viable backup to Brady that we can realistically have. I don't disagree with that sentiment.
However, Mallett isn't going to be our post-Brady QB - he'll be around 29 by that time, and we all know (sadly) it's right about that time to start thinking about the future at QB.
A guy like AJ Mcarron - a smart, hard-working kid who played in a pro-style offense for someone who is good friends with Belichick - could very well come in and at least prove a viable back-up in his first year, if not the future starter. Oddly enough, draft reports on him seem pretty similar to when Brady was coming out - high football IQ, good on the short to medium routes, tough competitor and good leader, but average build and not a very strong arm. Not saying he's going to end up like Brady, but I think he has a chance to be a starter in the right system.
My thinking is that the Texans pick a non-QB to start the 2nd round, then wait to see who's left at QB to start the 3rd round. If they don't go QB in the 3rd and Mcarron is on the board when the Patriots want him (end of the 3rd round, or 4th round), then they snag him and send Mallett to Houston for a late pick this year and a conditional pick next year.
This isn't what I'm hoping for necessarily -- I would rather grab someone like Tajh Boyd in the 5th round -- but if we do trade Mallett we'll need a more NFL-ready rookie, and I think Mcarron is just that given the offense he played in and the number of big games he played in.
