Tom Curran: Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

I can't see anyway it is 33. From the sounds of it, the Texans are the only ones interested. Why in the world would they give up 33 for a quarterback who's on a one year deal?

Of course I hope they get the 33 like everyone else. If nothing happens with him this draft I'm sure next year people will be discussing the free agent Mallett for pick 33 in the 2015 draft ;)

Like I said in the other Mallett thread - I still don't get the infatuation with the idea that Mallett has to be sent packing....

David Carr had a world of potential and went bust because he got sacked more than any QB in NFL history for like three straight years because he was playing behind an expansion offensive line (whose intended star, Tony Boselli - one of the best OTs of all-time - never ended up playing) and developed incurable jitters and happy feet.

I don't think Derek Carr should be judged based on his brother. I'm also not convinced the Texans would ever draft Derek Carr, though, because of the history.

A free agent backup QB slated to be your potential starter is worth $5 million a year in today's NFL. This is what Mallet will earn on the open market.

This means the Patriots get Mallet's services for one year AND a 4th round comp. pick by keeping him. Given that, Houston's early 3rd is likely good enough for a trade, but just barely. His value is mid. 2nd to early 3rd.

I think you are one round off. Mid 3rd at best, IMO.

OL/ASJ-Amaro/Coleman-Moncrief please.

ESPN's Ed Werder stated on SportsCenter Friday that he is "told" Ryan Mallett is "not available" for trade.

The Texans were rumored to be discussing a trade for Mallett with the Patriots on Thursday. So far, nothing has happened on that front, and the buzz has died down. These things tend to be fluid, of course, so we're not ruling out a Mallett trade to Houston, where new coach Bill O'Brien has a history with Mallett from New England, and currently has a pretty glaring quarterback need.

Ed Werder said on ESPN that Mallett is not available for trade.

Belichick translation: "You may be the only one interested in Mallett, but that doesn't mean you get him for free, Billy."

instead of Texans... What about Ryan Mallet to Titans for a 2nd next year? Does it have to be a draft pick this year?

In which case they should simply say no thanks and hang on to him. It isn't worth it.
I disagree. I don't think that a back up QB is worth a 3rd pick for one year. With a 3rd rounder we could either get a back up QB for the next 4 years or we could improve another part of the team, like get a center or a receiver.

cant be true, Mallett is god awful. BB needs to ship him out.

What are you responding to?

I wrote that he's not worth trading if you don't give up a mid 2nd to early 3rd.

If no one wants to give more than that, you hold onto him.

That's what I wrote.

I'd be happy with a 2015 3rd with escalators to a 2015 1st

I'm not buying the Werder report. There is a reason why Belichick spent all that time looking at QBs.

Unless Mallett is so convinced that he can unseat Brady that he's willing to accept peanuts to stay in Foxboro, the Pats need to get another quarterback either this year or next year. The question is did they find anyone this year that floats their boat?

Obviously there is nothing stopping them Franchise tagging him should he excel.. besides nothing stopping them tearing up his rookie deal and signing a new 3 year deal either worth 5m a year. He wouldn't command much more than that as a free agent so he might as well do the deal.

I would agree with this. The Pats have a value for Mallet, heck, for all I know they might have plans to sign him to a long term deal after this year. If they get rid of him they have to replace him, which would probably include a qb drafted in the first 2 rounds, or a qb drafted and a free agent qb. Why in the world would they ever trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick?

He really isn't, he has performed the best of any backup QB we have had in the preseason since Brady was the backup to Bledsoe.
