I think many of us would be okay with that thought, especially since Mallett is familiar with our system and has 3 years of experience as the backup.

The problem, as you pointed out, is that Mallett would likely feel as though he'd have a much better chance of starting and making better money when someone takes him in free agency next spring. It's hard to imagine Belichick offering something competitive enough for keeping Mallett. I think it'd have to be in the 2.5 million dollar range per year, and even then, that doesn't address any competitive aspect that Mallett would push down into his gut from knowing that he's going to continue to sit on the bench.

But you have to remember that the Patriots do NOT have a $22 million payday set for Brady, the starter. He anticipated that a team would not pay him in his declining years at that rate, and signed for less than $10 million in 2015 and subsequent, Just so he wouldn't be forced to leave like Namath, Unitas, Montana, Favre etc.

Belechick could pay two QBs up to $20 million combined as many other SB contenders have done.

So that allows for an awfully big room to re-sign their backup QB if they thought he was worth it. . Especially, as he could be inheriting a SB contender rather than trying to turn around a talent deficient disaster like Jacksonville or the Raiders.

First of all, Brady's cap hit are in the 14-15 million dollar range for the remainder of his new deal, so it's not "less than 10 million dollars" as you've stated. There's a big difference. He's not having cap hits of 18-19 million dollars like many of the other QBs, but it's not like it's in the single digits either, which is what you suggest.

Let's also remember that Brady's guaranteed 53 million dollars was only several million dollars behind what bar setter Drew Brees recently signed for in terms of guaranteed money, and that Brady signed for more guaranteed dollars that any of the other recent bigger 120 million dollar QB pacts that we've seen lately. It was a damn good deal for him too, but yes--in terms of the salary cap, Brady doesn't have a cap hit that is in the upper teens or pushing the 20 million dollar mark, so that is a positive and was great on his part to save the team 5 million or so in potential cap hits every year.

I don't think that automatically makes Bill Belichick want to go out and overspend at the position of backup QB when he could choose to utilize that money in many other ways, but sure--he has the ability to spend a little more at the backup position, should be decide to.

That still doesn't solve the conundrum that Mallett would have to go through in terms of wanting to start in the NFL, and that's why the odds of it happening are significantly low in my opinion.

When and where has it been reported that Bill Belichick turned down a 2nd round pick for Ryan Mallett anywhere? Let alone multiple offers, as in plural?

There was a rumor that Belichick was looking for a 2nd round pick in return for Mallett this year, not that he had turned anyone down. Even that rumor is nothing more than...an unsubstantiated rumor.

Per two individuals that I greatly respect, the Patriots have turned down offers of a second round pick for back-up quarterback Ryan Mallett. Twice.

I'm not saying this is definitively true, merely that the assertion has been made.

Thanks for the link ctpatsfan77. Like I said in my post, even if it's true, it's nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor, but I'm glad that there is some internet lore somewhere stating that we've turned down a 2nd rounder. That tells me that it's a possibility.

It's just funny that somewhere between the beginning of Sept.2012, and the several months or so (from 9/12 to the beginning of 2013 when Underhill reported it), the Pats went from "not being able to find any takers for a trade" (per the media reports), to suddenly turning down 2nd round choices.

I don't believe it myself, but I appreciate the link provided and the answer to the question.

I don't think the Cardinals will like who is left at QB when they are picking at #20. So deal them Mallett for #120 in '14 and a sliding pick from 2nd-7th round in '15 based on snaps. Good chance that old statue in Arizona gets hurt and we cash in.

The Pats are not going to pay the freight on a new contract for Mallett, might as well cash him in for a player(s) to develop.

From Mettenberger to Fales to Smith and others, we can get a QB from the 3rd-7th or UDFA this year. Maybe we find a gem, maybe we get a 1-2 year back-up, and get serious about a QB in 2-3 years out when we will for sure need to prep up.

Post draft we can take an early look at this poll vs reality.
Remember the issue was what will the Pats do, not what do you think they should do.
Only one Patsfan member nailed the fact that BB took a QB in the early rounds.

mgteich read BB's moves to a T

Most here thought Mallet would not be traded despite a few incessantly vocal trade predictors.

It's still possible we sign a UDFA at QB, but 3 training camp arms may be enough.
