Pats showing the most interest in Michael Sam

If the Pats think he can have some kind of impact, I don't care about his sexuality. That is his business.

Personally, I wouldn't spend more than a late round pick on the guy, but that has to do with what I think he can do in the NFL.

I agree that his sexuality is of no importance in the debate of whether to draft him. He is sounding like a fringe addition at best, so he may well be a long shot to make the roster if selected.

If he is just a throwaway pick, then I would hate to think that the decision to release him if he fails to prove his abilities would draw scorn for the Pats if he lacks the ability to play in the NFL.

At the risk of starting a politically or emotionally charged discussion (ehehe risk) I really want this team to sign this guy. Even if it means passing over a better option or reaching for him in the 5th or 6th.

Sam won't be Jackie Robinson but as a civil rights slacktivist I still think it will be something remembered for a long while and and I want that associated with my team. Between Hernandez and Spygate the team's reputation as an organization has taken some hits. I'd like to see us be the team that helps a player break that barrier.

Your thread title is wrong. The article says they are one of six showing the most interest.

Watch him play and don't read into the underwear Olympics too much. Being SEC defensive player of the year, to me, means he can play.

If he's the BPA at any point in which the Pats pick then pull the trigger. Although how often does the Pats "showing" interest mean actual interest?

Players have won the Heismann trophy and gone on to do nothing in the NFL. Same with the Defensive Player of the Year trophy.

Sam is a slow-footed OLB who lacks the agility needed to be able to cover TEs and RBs in the NFL. Futhermore, he lacks the explosiveness needed to be able to rush the passer at the NFL level.

UDFA ok, why not. But the size and athleticism numbers do not suggest that Sam should be drafted any earlier than the 7th round at best. The Pats should not draft players for 'feel good story' reasons. They should draft them to improve their team and franchise ability to win.

Michael Sam’s biggest mistake was working out at the combine and at his pro day. He viewed as pick in rounds 4-6 prior to his showings at those events, now he is projected 7-UDFA.

The fact is that the Patriots show interest in many players for many different reasons. Their interest does not mean they will select the player or that the player will even be on their draft board.

But Bequette is going to breakout this year. I feel it....:)

Bequette played 14 snaps in 2014 and had 1 QB hit, Brandon Spikes played 690 snaps and had the same number of QB hits. Bequette has not seen the field because he struggles setting the edge due to a lack of strength, as a pass rusher he has actually flashed the ability to get to the QB when given the opportunity.

If Bequette cannot get on the field then it is unlikely that Michael Sam could even make the roster. We talk a lot about depth at the DE position but I actually think Belichick likes using Ninkovich and Jones the 90% or more of the time.

I would assume so. Hopefully, Bequette plays 0% of the snaps in 2014 for the Patriots due to him getting cut.

Although unlikely to happen, what if he turned up and put up like 15 sacks for his new team? Would people on here be crying about Belichick cutting a player too early? Wait and see what he can do in TC & pre-season first.

We've seen what he can do, which is next to nothing. He obviously has pics involving the front office and farm animals.

Really? You want them to sign him even if it means passing over a better option?

Really..?!?

Maybe BB double dips and takes Ealy and Sam, I have no issues with what he does on his own time, if he can play football then take him if he's the weighted BPA.

Sam doesnt fit our system. He is undersized and overrated!

Undersized and overrated? Hmmm. Tedy Bruschi was PAC-10 Defensive Lineman of the Year at 6'1" 247. How'd that work out?

Seriously..we don't need to take a player just because he's gay...if he can't play at an NFL level we dont' want him..get off your liberal bandwagon..this is not about being politically correct..this is about can he play at an NFL level

We'd probably be better off just having a gay player who's already on the team making an announcement.

According to what I've read on JI and GangGreen over the past decade and a half we already have one playing QB for us, and nothing to the contrary will convince them otherwise.:D

  1. Hey who cares if he is as slow as a slug.....HE SLEEPS WITH DUDES! Sign the beast! No thank you. Disgusting reason for signing someone.

As if that even factors in how well someone plays football.

I guess that means no Shazier?:(
