Gil Brandt: Aaron Dobson has some special stuff about him

NFL teams should be lining up to employ you as a scout

I don't know why i keep saying Dopson instead of Dobson all I am trying to say is that Dobson was a Second Rounder last year in what looks like a weak WR class now. He wouldn't be a Second Rounder in this upcoming Draft...true or false? I say true.

Wow, you are a genius.

And IF you are trying to debate what I said you are not a genius. This WR class coming up might be one of the best ones in years. And I am sure many here agree.

Last year's draft class was not weak. It was deep with a lot of strong second and third round prospects. What it didn't have was elite WRs worthy of high first round picks.

To say in hindsight that it was a weak WR draft class after one year is misleading too. A lot of elite WRs had mediocre to awful rookie seasons. You cannot judge the quality of a WR based on his rookie production. Reggie Wayne has 345 yards and 0 TDs his rookie season. Demaryius Thomas had 283 yards and 2 TDs his rookie season. Alshon Jeffreys only had 367 yards and 3 TDs his rookie season and over 1,400 yards and 7 TDs his second year. I could go on and on with examples like this,

I think 1100 yards is entirely possible for Dobson. That is about where a rank him. A poor mans #1 and a good teams #2.

Edelman has #2 numbers last year but he was fed the ball like made. To me he is more of a #3 but he paid him like a #2 cause we don't know how Gronk or Dobson will look this year for sure.

If I were to pick any Patriot to make the 2nd year leap, it would be Jamie Collins.

His play at the end of last season looked like he could be an elite Defender. Dobson never looked like an elite offensive weapon.

Honestly the only thing "special" about Dobson last year was him being the only deep threat in a decimated offense that had Brady throwing the ball. I didn't see anything "special" about him as a player. I do think he can have a good career, and maybe over 1,000 yards this season.... but "special" is a special word that shouldn't be thrown around like it's nothing. At best he looks like a fringe-Pro Bowler....at best. "Special" WR's are guys like Megatron, Julio Jones, Randy Moss, TO, Fitzgerald, etc...... Dobson isn't special. He'll be part of the system and hopefully he can hold on to some passes next year, but he doesn't look like a WR that can dominate and take over a game.

Dobson was the most productive rookie wr the pats have ever had and he fought drop issues his first game and was injured the last part of the season. Doesn't get much more special than that IMO. He even had Tom's trust. Can't read too much on the rookie wr's because most are mediocre in terms of production and then don't make that huge jump until year 2.

I'm just worried about Dobson's foot. That's costing him valuable offseason time. Even still, though, I'm really optimistic for what he can do in 2014, and I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be. He showed a ton of potential last season, and the one big problem area--drops--should be correctable since he was known for having great hands in college.

Dobson had 37 receptions for 519 yards and 4 TDs.
Terry Glenn had 90 receptions for 1,132 yards and 6 TDs.

Put him on Revis island during TC and that should help him improve even more.

No one should underestimate this point - all the WRs still need to have the talent, but going up against Revis in practice isn't going to hurt at all.

Maybe "she" wasn't that bad after all ;)

I don't follow the pre-draft news and scouting nearly as much as some of you guys do, but I thought that some experts felt that the WR class was fairly deep this 2014 draft class?

In other words, is it "weak," or is it "deep?"

IMO Dobson will have a good year, if we can revert to the previous success of tight ends...

Another good point - though I think he can do well regardless, having Gronk and perhaps another TE on the field is only going to open things up more for everyone else.

It is supposed to be the deepest WR class in years. There will be 4-6 WRs that could go in the first round and a bunch more that will go in the second or third.

Last year lacked that solid class of top prospects, but the second and third talent from last year is probably on par with the second or third round talent this year. I think Dobson would probably be selected in the second or third round in this year's draft but he definitely wouldn't be the sixth WR taken like he was last year. The sixth WR taken in the draft may be in the first round around where Paterson was taken last year as the third WR taken. This year may have three WRs taken in the top 10-15.

Thanks, Rob. That's pretty much what I thought. The more WRs that come off the board may bode well for us in hopes of addressing the DL, OL, LB, TE, and possibly S positions.

Grier made a better pick with Glenn that the pick Parcells wanted: Tony Brackens.

It really doesn't

I'm not as sold on Dobson being able to put up WR1/WR2 numbers this year as much as most, but you've got to admit that plays like this make one salivate.

He definitely has the upside and potential to offer here as a deeper kind of "stretch the field" threat.

He's got the speed, he just needs more time to develop, read coverages, and get on the same page as Brady, I think.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks for sharing. Then again, I haven't read "Patriot Reign" yet. I chose "War Room," and "The Education of a coach" instead, but am looking forward to it sometime this spring/summer.

Well, I found lots of interesting views and comments in this thread. It would be a tremendous help to our SB aspirations if Dobson could become a bonafide deep threat and along the way put up some nice numbers. I, for one, will be rooting for him to make us all "believers"......................

I'm excited to see what Boyce can do with a off season he is as explosive as receivers they are talking about in 1st or second rounds this year.
The more I think about it you only grab a receiver In tbe first two rounds if they have undeniable talent can be a day one starter and bump one of the pups off the roster. I don't think you grab a receiver til the middle rounds unless Benjamin is staring you in the face at 29.
My preference is to create a package to get Hageman and Kareem Martin in the draft then draft offensive lineman.
Take a chance and draft Colt Lyera hey he's not Hernandez and maybe needs direction we should be trying to help these talented guys not run away from them. And the converted basketball player his name escapes me let's take a chance on a high ceiling player not a OK floor.
If we don't grab Martin Deonne Buchanon would be the player to put our secondary top 5.
Thoughts?

I am an advocate of drafting a safety as well. That said, we don't know what the plans are for possibly moving Logan Ryan over either. If that's the case, that would give us a nice young corps of McCourty, Harmon, and Ryan as our primary 3 starters (and one rotational). If that's going to happen, then there's not really a need to choose safety in the top few rounds.

To take it one step further, I really feel as though we need to come out of there with one of ASJ, Amaro, Niklas, or Fiedorowicz as our TE position is in desperate need. In order to do so, we'll need to take one in the first/second round. Since most of us don't see the use in spending a 1st round pick on a TE, we'll likely have to use our second rounder on it. If that's the case, there's not going to be a chance to take Buchanon or Kareem Martin.

I'd be more than happy with our first round selection being Hageman, Nix, Shazier, etc then using the second rounder on one of the TEs that is left. That would be fine, but it tends to limit other scenarios such as a guy like Martin or Buchanon.

Others will disagree, but I'd be fine with taking a shot on a guy like Lyerla in the 7th round. It's low risk with a possible higher upside.
