Patriots Release Safety Adrian Wilson

Saw this coming. However usually this off season the Patriots make moves in 2s. They don't free up money unless they intend to use it. I wonder if this is just a response to signing Chung or if it is a move to free up money as Chung is a cap neutural signing as far as I can tell.

If so it makes me wonder who they can be thinking of picking up.

Based on the media reports it appeared he took a physical on reporting to the offseason program and apparently did not pass. It would not be shocking if this was the fate of a few others but this seems more to do with his health than wanting the money. If it was only money related they would not have waited until now (unless maybe there is a bookeeping reason for when you release an injured palyer).

Saw this comin, Chung resigns. Revis gets his #24 now. Way BB revamped our Def, he couldn't sign/deal for a legit bonified solid Safety?

Most likely, this has everything to do with the signing of Pat Chung but there is part of me that is curious if they may be clearing space to make a run at Chris Johnson. If not I do not really see a reason not to let Wilson come to camp and compete for a job as a hybrid cover safety/linebacker.

Or maybe Revis just really wanted #24.

We have an All Pro safety in McCourty, the other safety can be rotational, Chung can play in the box on the early downs and Ryan or Harmon can play in coverage on passing downs.

That is the first thing I thought of but this move alone does not give them the room to go for CJ2K. However I might believe they are targeting a FA TE or FA DE... Maybe signing Will Smith would make sense for the dollars in/dollars out equation.

Clearing Wilson only opens up 600k or so of cap space, we're probably in slightly worse space (100-500k) cap-wise with the release of Wilson and signing of Chung.

Nothing to do with Johnson.

Chung signing + Wilson release have a net effect of clearing $126,666 in cap space leaving Pats with 7,932,369 in cap space.

doubleedit: sup Miguel below me...

Yeah I hear ya! McCourty is nice but to get a legit top shelf Safety along side him roaming in outfield with Revis & Browner would be Ridiculous freeing up MaC shadowing opposing Slot Receivers. I really like Ryan and hope he gets in there. He's a ball hawk. I can see Chung bein used on Special Teams as well.

Re: Adrian Wilson might have been cut

Just get an extra coverage backer in the draft

Byrd was the only safety on the market capable of doing that, I think it was he or Revis and they opted for the #1 CB.

he should have been cut a long time ago. he will be signing a one day contract with AZ in a few weeks and calling it a career

No big surprise; I thought he'd make it into TC and have a chance to earn a job there, but I didn't think that he would succeed in doing so, Hopefully he manages to catch on somewhere else and at least make a roster, though - it would suck for his career to end like that.

Have any numbers come out on Danieal Manning's contract with Cincy? He would have been great here, will be interesting to see what he got.

Miguel:

Is he eligible for termination pay, and if so, does that count against the cap?

Re: Adrian Wilson might have been cut

He is way better than Wang Chung ever was...

You don't have to call him "wang" because he's part chinese.

I'm guessing it was meant as an 80s pop pun:

Wilson got a nice pay check from the Pats last season for not playing. He SHOULD be thankful to the organization. Also who knows, its almost 4 months before camp starts. He could always come back if he shows he's healthy....though its unlikely.

He was a great S for 2 teams. Too bad the Pats weren't one of them. Good luck Adrian

It wouldn't matter. Anyone who's Chinese would have been mocked with the "everybody Wang Chung tonight" taunt. TommyBrady12 is right. Stop calling Pat Chung "Wang Chung." It's offensive.

While it's good to tread lightly with things that might be taken the wrong way as a slur, I'd like to think I live in a world where benefit-of-the-doubt still counts for something. I have no idea what Claremonster's intent was, but I am always one to hope for the best.

Bigots have poisoned the well for us punsters :(
