Patriots Seven Round Mock Draft 3.0, Heavy On Defense, Light on Tight End
By:

Crichton can step right into a rotation with Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Michael Buchanan, giving each the opportunity to keep fresh without sacrificing setting the edge....

Rounds 1-2 - I'd be fine with the first 2 picks, though I expect that their draft placements likely to be switched, with Tuitt going at 29 and Crighton at 62. Good Job

Rounds 3-4 Sorry but I don't like the next 2 picks at all. I don't want another WR that high. I'd be much higher on looking at Tripp (speed OLB) in the 3rd, and Feiderwicz (TE) with one of the 4ths. I'd also be fine if one of the top C's was there in the 3rd. I have no interest in drafting a run stopping ILB that high. Beauharnis is already on the roster. And you are right, even the end of the 4th would be a stretch for Ikard. If I had to reach for someone there I'd rather take a shot at that FCB kid Fede who has some intriguing numbers at DE

Rounds 6-7 - Those are all good value picks, and I'd be happy with any or all of them.

If Tuitt is on the board at #62 and Moncrief at #93, I will consider seeing if I am able to fly by using my arms as wings.

#29 – you selected the #43 ranked player.
#62 – you selected the #40 ranked player.
#93 – you selected the #65 ranked player.
#126 – you selected the #175 ranked player, in addition, we do not hold the #126 pick we hold pick #130.
#140 – you selected the #264 ranked player.
#182 – you selected the #178 ranked player, in addition, we do not hold the #182 pick we hold the #198.
#190 – you selected the #188 ranked player, in addition, we do not hold the #190 pick we hold the #206.
#221 – you selected the #170 ranked player, in addition we do not hold the #221 pick we hold the #244.

The order you took these players makes no sense. If you wanted to take them, it would be –

Tuitt
Crichton
Moncrief
Schofield
Brown
Duncan
Starr
Ikard

The Patriots picks are #29, #62, #93, #130, #140, #198, #206, and #244 for future reference.

I expect to get a TE, LB and OL out of the first three rounds. I am fine with giving one of these up to get Crichton.

ROUND 1
If we want a DE, our first pick is the spot, and Crichton is the player. He seems to be moving up on the boards. He may be available after a minor trade down, although having him for 5 years may have more value than the late extra pick. My choice would be a TE, but I am fine with Crichton.

ROUND 2
If we haven't gotten a TE in the first round, I'd take one here.

ROUND 3
The best LB available, a TE, or an offensive lineman if there is value.

ROUND 4
For me, this round is about running backs. There will be several options. I suspect the offensive linemen may not be any better than what we have.

A good read to get the debate going (all the reads here on Patfans have been pretty good as of late - not sure if the writers are taking it up a notch or if I just haven't noticed in the past)

Of course any mock draft is as much a crap shoot as the draft itself, not knowing who will be available etc.

My personal preference would be to see #29 (draft trade value 640) turn into two 2nd rounders (using their 3rd or 4th round pick to move up in the 2nd to grab a guy they like if need be)

Basically that would mean we'd have 3 picks in the first two rounds instead of 2

In a supposedly deep draft that would be my preference, as I would generally consider 2nd round picks in this draft to have comparative late 1st round value in other drafts

All of that is easier said than done as one needs a viable trade partner to tango with and many teams with late 1st round choices may try to do the same thing, depressing the trade value of #29

My feeling is that Tuitt won't be there at #62 though, so I'd welcome a trade back to take him earlier in the 2nd (assuming he's even there - though I think he will be)

After that I'd be happy with OL, DE, LB and TE/WR in that order of positional priority, though the signing of Chung may make OL depth less of a priority in the draft.

Belichick doesn't care about where the so called draft experts rank the players he prefers.

He only cares about one expert - himself and his team of ad visors.

I can pretty much guarantee that after the draft you'll see draftnicks pick apart Belichick's picks in a similar way

I can also pretty much guarantee that Belichick will be right about some of his picks and wrong about some of his picks... but all that counts is how he thinks they fit in HIS system - not how so-called experts rank them fitting in on all 32 NFL teams

The Pats will pick Jace Amaro at 29 if he's there--no joke. Most of the negative talk about Amaro is a smokescreen. Watched him all last year and it's spooky how similar he is to Gronkowski.

Belichick may not care about ranks but this mock relies on –

- The #40 ranked player being on the board at #62
- The #65 ranked player being on the board at #93
- The #178 ranked player being on the board at #198
- The #188 ranked player being on the board at #206
- The #170 ranked player being on the board at #244

So sure that logic of Belichick not caring about ranks might mean he would draft Crichton, Brown, and Ikard much earlier than projected but it does not mean that those other players are going to drop.

The likelihood of Tuitt, Moncrief, or Schofield being on the board where he has them mocked to go is extremely low to a near impossible.

Ebron has a poor pro day and his stock is dropping as well, I have seen a few mocks with him dropping to #29 recently.

Unless those are BELICHICK'S rankings they are completely irrelevant. There's dozens of pre-draft rankings. I'm not sure which you're citing.

But go back and look at Belichick's past drafts, compare who he picked with whatever draft ranking you prefer, and see how closely Belichick came to the rankings

Every draft is the same "Belichick reached..." refrain year after year.

And yet a good number of those players became starters.
