Draft Rumors

I can confirm this tweet.

Don't mean to take this thread off track, but I don't get this suggestion that Belichick doesn't pay or value kickers. It seems to me exactly the opposite -- that he values the position more than most do.

First off, the Patriots used the franchise tag on Vinatieri twice. As for "letting him go," Vinatieri has publicly said that when he signed with the Colts he didn't give the Patriots a chance to counter.

The Patriots responded by using a 4th-round pick on Gostkowski, making him the highest-drafted placekicker in the past 8 years. When his rookie contract expired they offered him the 2nd-round RFA tender, rather than the draft-round level as might have been expected. Then they signed to a long-term deal that made him one of the higher-paid kickers in the league.

And it's worth noting that Vinatieri was, well, unwonderful on kickoffs. While if things had worked out differently he might still be doing FGs for New England, the Pats would have had to figure something else out on KOs.

It doesn't but it often does. A week or so ago Daniel Jeremiah was tweeting some things he learned when he was a scout and one of them was (paraphrasing) : "When a player says he talked to a team that he can't divulge, it was usually the Patriots".

I can confirm this tweet.

I hope you're right. I would love to see Tripp in a Pats uniform.

Clowney in the AFC East?

• Word from the NFL meetings is the Texans are trying hard to deal the first pick in the draft. They want to move down and acquire extra selections. Sources say they might have a trade partner in the Bills, who appear interested in moving up. It is unclear who the Bills would want in a trade-up scenario. Some believe they would move up for a quarterback. They also could make good use of an offensive tackle such as Greg Robinson. And it would be something to see them pair Mario Williams with either Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack.

That would be the likely link.

I think the perfect trading partner is the Falcons.. they picked up a 3 comp picks and they need to win now.. after that disaster last year.

I could see them target Clowney or Robinson.

They would have to give up #6 #37 #68 to make that happen.

John McClain of the Houston Comical has shot down the rumor of the Texans close to trading the #1 pick to Buffalo. Says it'll never happen

This is what he said "No way Texans trade with Buffalo to ninth"

He never shot down the rumor that Houston has been shopping the #1.

Only problem is McClain might had good intell and info with Kubiak and crew, with BoB arriveing that may chance more then he like.

See, if this trade happened, the Texans could still get a stud athlete at pick #9, plus they would also probably net another 1st and two more 2nd round picks. So basically, pick #1 for pick #9 plus future 1st, plus pick #41 plus future 2nd. It would be a pretty huge bounty.

With the lower 2nd round pick, they could trade that for Mallet plus maybe a future conditional pick depending on how well he does for them. IE if he becomes a fixture at the starting QB position they give up another future 2nd, but if he gets cut from the roster by the 2nd season, we'd get nothing more.

It would make a lot of sense for a team that has multiple holes. Not to mention consider this - Andre Johnson isn't getting any younger. Would Mike Evans at pick #9 make a lot of sense for the Texans?

BOB likes his tight ends. How about Eric Ebron? Mike Evans works though. I'd love him on the Pats.

Never said he shot down the rumor that Houston is shopping the #1. Hey, I would trade it too as there is really no one worth taking at 1, i.e. no Andrew Luck type QB.

Interesting that both Houston and St. Louis are looking to trade down.

i doubt Houston moves, but I think someone will cut a deal with St. Louis.

Sources: Manziel, Bridgewater Expected to Fall
Updated March 28, 2014
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

There is a growing sentiment among some of our NFL sources that one or two of the high-profile quarterback prospects could be in store for a draft-day free fall. The two quarterbacks are Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater and Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel.

Late in the 2013 season, we wrote that teams weren't grading Bridgewater like the top quarterback prospects of past years. Before the Combine, we wrote that two teams picking in the top five had Blake Bortles as their top-ranked quarterback. Teams are lukewarm on Bridgewater, as they have concerns about his physical skill set and build. A few sources said they wouldn't be surprised if Bridgewater fell to the second round.

We've also learned that one team picking in the top 10 has Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron rated ahead of Bridgewater.

A slide for Bridgewater seems more likely than Manziel. Manziel helped himself with his Pro Day performance, but there are still concerns about him off the field and how much of his game is going to translate in the NFL. Teams wonder if he will be able to develop his pocket passing. One source who attended his Pro Day said that he looked good, though he threw side-armed at times, and they wish he would have done more work out of the pocket. Teams feel that they would have to change their scheme to a shotgun-based offense for Manziel.

While some believe that Manziel could be in store for a draft-day slide, they think it is less likely for him, as it only takes one quarterback needy team to fall in love with his playmaking ability and "it factor."

Meanwhile, we know a few teams that are rating Derek Carr as the second quarterback behind Blake Bortles. Sources said that Carr is the most natural passer in the draft, while Bortles has the most upside.

Sources feel that that quarterback-needy teams like Houston and Jacksonville could get better value to pass on a signal caller in the first round and see who falls them at the top of the second. Cleveland could take one of the elite talents with the fourth pick and target a quarterback late in the first round.

In the 2011 quarterback class, second-round picks Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick have been far and away better than first-rounders Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and Jake Locker. Considering that nobody views Bortles to be on a par with Andrew Luck, Cam Newton or Matthew Stafford, a number of teams feel that Houston would be crazy to pass on Jadeveon Clowney for a quarterback. Houston could take Clowney and see if Bridgewater or Manziel falls to them at 33 or trade back into the first round to get their quarterback.

Last year Geno Smith, Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib fell far lower than expected. That trend has happened in other years like 2005 with Aaron Rodgers and 2007 with Brady Quinn. Multiple sources feel that history could repeat itself in 2014 with Manziel and/or Bridgewater.

If I were the Texans, I would trade #1 to the Falcons for #6, #37, and a 2015 first round pick, take Khali Mack at #6, make a selection with #33, and trade #37 to the Patriots for Mallett. This gives them one season with Mallett and if O’Brien believes he can be a franchise QB then it makes sense (if he does not then I would not expect it to happen). If Mallett fails, they have two first round picks in 2015 and could move up to draft one of the top QBs Mariota, or Winston, and let Mallett walk. Best case Mallett succeeds and they can use the extra first round pick next season to add to an already improving team, worst case they draft a franchise QB in 2015 and they lost the #37 pick that was not their original pick anyway.

@NFLDraftBites has had a couple of Patriots' related rumours. I do not know who is behind it but e's followed by a number of people that I respect and follow. so, usual disclaimer out of the way:

Cincinnati's Blake Annen intriguing Tight End. 6-4 247 w/ a 4.42 40. Lacks production but cannot deny athleticism. Patriots very interested

Had Garrett Gilbert projected Patriots in Rd 6. Have to reevaluate slot. Tremendous pro day helped stock. Hear rumblings of Tommy Brady

https://twitter.com/NFLDraftBites/status/449968012054261760

Just watched a video of all Gilbert's completions of 20+ yards, he looks a very natural passer, steps up well in the pocket and evades the rush decently enough.

Looks to get through his progressions quickly and has a nice tight spiral - 6th round based on the 20 minutes seen of him passing for 20+...potential steal. Gil Brandt likes him: Garrett Gilbert's strong pro day will boost NFL draft stock - NFL.com

Might go as high as round 3 albeit according to fansided, if the Pats can pick up another 3rd rounder via trade back then he could be worth it.

I saw the same video and I too was impressed. Especially liked his movement within the pocket on the first play.
