Best wishes to him and his family, no one should ever half to go thought that.

Yeah the recent news is not good Im afraid. I live in Rochester and golfed in a foursome in front of Jim Kelly in a golf tournament about 5 years ago. He was a good dude and hit the ball a mile. We were waiting to take our approach on par 5 and the tee box he was on was blind and he hit it over our heads since we were down a hill.

We had to do the right thing and tee it up on an empty beer bottle for him :D
and busted his chops on the next hole. He was a good sport about it.

I have been a die hard pats fan since the late 70s but I have to admit those 90s Bills team were very very good.

Very sad. He did seem like a good dude. He is still young enough where he can hopefully come back from this. Here is the latest I have read.

Jim Kelly avoids cancer surgery, doctors say it is 'treatable and potentially curable' - NY Daily News

The new plan, she wrote, is for the 54-year-old former NFL quarterback to be treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, where Kelly will be treated, added in a statement that surgery could “potentially” become an option again.

“Jim Kelly’s condition remains very treatable and potentially curable," the statement read. “Our immediate focus is on controlling his pain and beginning the process of eradicating the cancer.”

I wish him and his family the best.

Kelly doesn't get the recognition he deserves because he is career is downgraded because he lost four Super Bowls which I find is crazy. I never got that your team is considered a bigger loser if you lose a Super Bowl than going 8-8 and missing the playoffs.

Kelly made the no huddle and hurry up offense relevant. Boomer Esiason was doing it first in Cincy, but Kelly was the guy who showed that you can demoralize defenses with it. Kelly really has a stamp on today's NFL because most teams employ a version of the K Gun offense (at least part of the time) in their system.

Best wishes to probably the most underrated QB of my lifetime. This guy was great.

I enjoyed watching him back in his day ... big strong guy.

The football gods should have found a way to get him 1 Super Bowl ... he deserved 1.

My prayers for strength for him and his family.

This not good if there is significant metastatic disease with lymphatic involvement. The unfortunate situation is once the lymphatic are involved, the cells have the potential to multiply in other tissues of the body. Surgery would only be an option if the tumor is localized and the cells haven't spread. These things can be so tough to catch early and treat...the crazy thing with many forms of cancer is that pain is not a major factor early in the disease. Jim Kelly is a tough guy and he endured so many NFL hits, a persistent mouth sore was probably nothing to worry about--- I'm hoping for a miracle here.

Those 90s Bills were pretty sick. It's just unfortunate they had to play the Cowboys in two of their SBs, who were the best team I have seen in my lifetime.

Best wishes to the Kelly family and all those dealing with cancer.

I'm a science guy and remember in the late 60s thinking we'll pretty much have fusion power and have cancer knocked in 30 years. While the efficacy of treatments for many cancers is greatly improved, the typical treatment is to poison and/or irradiate the cancer cells the effects of which most often destroy other vital organs (q.v. heart) over treatments. Someday hopefully this century chemo, etc. will be look upon like we look on bloodletting as individually genetically tailored treatments either eliminate or hold in place these mutant cells.

Lost 3 generations of my family to melanoma, with a 4th generation in treatment. Time to stop.

Very sad to hear this, my heart goes out to Jim Kelly and his family and to all others who have went through this.

Yep.

I really don't think any team is ever going to 4 SB's in a row again.

Yep.

I really don't think any team is ever {EDIT} losing 4 SB's in a row again.

We tried like hell following 2007. Brady hurt is a viable excuse.
Had another shot after 2011 but could not meet the goalposts set by the Bills. Not even close.

Hope Kelly makes a full recovery and his Cancer goes wide left. Right out of his body.
