Is it too early to start reminiscing about the old NFL draft setup?

All day Saturday, all day Sunday. Weeklong buildup. Set yourself up like an NFL playoff weekend with food, drink, cigars. The missus knows not to book anything those days. The buildup to the first round on ESPN all morning. Get a few pops in you before the Jets fans groan at their first round pick. Listen to analysts' heads explode when Belichick's 3rd round pick comes in from left field. Live posting here for the rest of the day Saturday. Then all the navel gazing on Sunday at the already-made picks.

The new format: Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday... one cannot possibly derive the same level of entertainment over that time period due to work, family, and the inability to remain tipsy for 60 hours. <sigh>

and here I thought that you were talking about when the Pats would pick in the top 5 every season.

but yeah, the three day draft is boring. A whole day for just one round is a joke.

I agree with you 100%. I loved the old draft setup. Now my wife knows the Thursday night first round is an untouchable night but midway thru the 2nd round on Friday I gotta go out to dinner. It sucks. I wish they'd go back to the old way but I'm sure there's a lot more money in it the current way so it's not happening Unless the ratings go down

Can't agree more- loved the concept of the "draft weekend" - now I can't stand it.

Agreed.

The current setup is awful.

I'm a produce manager and I work every Saturday. While I agree the old setup had a better buildup, I don't miss half of the 1st round anymore so I'm happy with the way it is now.

Hell, I remember the dark ages before the draft was even televised. I had to call the local newspaper's sports department to find out who the picks were.

Couldn't agree more with this annoying new setup. I remember purposely taking off the Saturday and I already had Sunday off (I work at a Wine Shop on the weekends/evenings for my 2nd job......used to have Sundays off regularly with CT laws until Malloy made sure I get no days off:mad:).

I'd get a discount on beer, wine and liquor load up and get some friends over and well obviously :eat3:

Bill always provides the suspense and we'd usually take $5 bets on who the pick would be and then many other teams provided a good dose of comedic gold as well

after the Bills pick :wha:

after the Raiders pick :rip:

after the Jets pick

With how social media is today there is really no reason to watch the draft on TV. All you really need is a cell phone or a tablet and an app that gives up to the second updates on the draft.

The draft is still fun to watch. Funniest Pats draft moment was when Tavon Wilson got drafted and Kiper was flipping though papers trying to find out who he was. If I remember correctly Gruden knew about him and talked about him. I think Kiper is pretty entertaining.

Before the switch, I used to get together with friends on Saturday and have a all day draft "party" of pizza and beer watching ESPN all day. Since the new format, I watch the draft on my own on Thursday night and maybe with them at a bar or a more unorganized get together on Friday. With the Pats always drafting at the end of round one and frequently trading out of the first round, the first day of the draft is kinda empty.

Unfortunately, the draft will never go back to the old way. They have two primetime nights of ratings now and that is all they care about. Now they are even pushing the draft back into May to capitalize on May sweeps.

Amen.....New format sux. Spreads it out to long and does use the full weekend instead using week nights and Friday night too.

I love the new NFL but I miss the Saturday Draft Day Party.
Goodell, Suck It!

this board is more fun then watching the first day of the Draft. watching the first day until the pats pack only to find out they traded back into day two is not fun at all lol

The two greatest sports weekends of my spring are the draft and The Masters ... love them both.

I and every other rabid NFL fan, at the conclusion of the Super Bowl...

Welp ...season over ...let's get going on the draft!!!! Can't wait!!!

Nutsdell responds by moving this fractured fairy tale BACK into May?
