(Probably) cheap, (possibly) worthwhile signings that can still be made

I would add that if the Patriots are looking to trade Ryan Mallett they should consider signing a QB.

We haven't even hit 5 pages yet.

No DEs? That's a position that could really use a veteran as a rotational stopgap, since many of the likely draft targets are extremely raw.

I didn't address the D-line because I expect that to happen via the draft. However, there are certainly DEs out there, and I can understand why people would have interest in at least some of them, so I should have listed some. With that said:

  • Phillips has been mentioned elsewhere a bunch, but I don't have any idea what he's going to be asking
  • Allen's public position makes it likely that he won't come cheap
  • Spencer's got a lot of dog in him. He couldn't play with Michael Vick
  • I have no idea what price Ayers is looking for, but I'd have expected him in already if there were interest (McDaniels draftee)
  • I think Will Smith's time has passed.

If you can think of others, please add them to the list. :)

There's still a few items in the middle of the FA barrel:

Blount
Incognito
Moreno
Clemons
Andre Brown
Kenny Britt
Sidney Rice
Miles Austin
Dustin Keller
Owen Daniels
Clabo/Steward (if Cannon is moving to guard)
Erin Henderson (if he's off the sauce)

Lastly, though it would probably bear no fruit, it might not hurt to give Tony Gonzalez a call and let him know that the team would have some interest if he felt the itch to play again.

Just thought I'd throw this out there for discussion.

I'd like Blount and Daniels and ideally a pass rushing defensive end that isn't going to break the bank.(easier said than done!!)

I'm thinking we are going to address the offensive line and defensive tackle position in the draft as they are both pretty deep positions this year.

I hate to say it but my fav on the list as far as impact....

Incognito. Would be a great move he would be a welcomed upgrade @ RG. Would give us 2 maulers @ both G spots. We could also focus on depth/developmental prospect @ G via draft and just go C early.

You named the flashy name guys. I want some hogs

Legarrette Blount
Ryan Wendell (vet minimum - reserve lineman)
Jason Avant
Josh Freeman/Colt McCoy (better than Tebow... someone has to throw it a gazillion times in training camp)

Shaun Phillips
Jonathan Vilma
Will Smith

Does anyone think we can get a 2nd round pick for Mallett? :D

And for old times sake...

Buddy Farnham

Take a good, long look at the FA lists. Feel free to share any "hogs" you find. I think you'll find there's a dearth.

Bb has turned no names into quality starters before. I don't know who those guys are. But we need a guard and center Thsts what I want.

BB also waits for June 1st cuts and training camp cuts to pick up guys. I'll bet we get an OL and maybe an ST/KR from that pile.

Scarnecchia retired.

De la Puente has his own thread

Goodwin spoke about retiring

Wendell is the Patriots C who they haven't re-signed

Montgomery is 31 and committed 11 penalties last season (and isn't good)

Baas can't stay healthy

etc....

This was a weak year in FA for guards and centers.

PWP, June first doesn't have the same roster impact any more. IIRC, the rules were changed a couple of years ago, so that when teams cut players they can designate them as a June first cut, even if they cut them in March (go figure). Because of that, players that used to get cut in or around 6/1 are usually long gone by that date, so the date has lost a lot of its significance.

You might want to read the Wells report. I realize we've had some bad dudes on the team, but I don't think we need that guy.

True, but in Miami he was top dog. He tries any of that crap here and Mankins would lay him out and Solder and Vollmer would not be far behind. I do not want that guy on the team either, but I do not think it would be a problem if he was on the team.

Right now my main concerns as far as the rest of FA goes, there are just 2 things I'd like to see happen before the draft.

1. Bring in a veteran FA who can play a 4-3 DE. This is the critical one IMHO in that we aren't going to find it in this year's draft as the position is particularly thin when we are drafting.

2. We are desperately thin at LB with Fletcher gone. A great starting 3 but who will back them up? The draft could account for one (Tripp), but a solid FA signing here would go a long way to making me feel more secure about the position. In an ideal world, Shaun Phillips would be an excellent choice in that he can also serve as a back up 4-3 DE

3. TE is a key area that needs both skill and depth improvements, but the more I think about it, the most obvious targets for us like Keller, Daniels, etc aren't going to be ready to show that they are ready until well after the draft.

There is also another possibility that has entered my mind recently that I haven't seen mentioned. (apologizes if it has), but perhaps Mark Harrison (taller, and only 10lbs lighter than Hernandez) might be being groomed as that "move TE". That's a position where receiving skills are paramount and when blocking is required, its more likely to be a downfield assignment or against someone your own size. Just a thought

4. The OL is also an area where we don't "have" to move until after the draft. Then, depending on whom we did or did not draft, that picture will be clearer. I have no doubt that there will be enough talent still on the market in May and June to fill any remaining depth issues. If we were forced to start the season with what's on the roster, we'd be OK, and certainly a lot better than 90% of the rest of the league as of this moment.

5.Finally, with only $4MM in current cap room and needing at least half of that to sign rookies and have even a minimum reserve, if anyone is going to be signed between now and the draft, something is gong to HAVE to happen with Vince Wilfolk. If not the main shopping list is going to go wanting.

6. As for RB, while I'd love to have either Blount or Moreno, they are both luxuries at this point. First guy willing to sign for a Million with a $500,000 guarantee gets the roster spot. If not we'll be OK with Vareen, Ridely, and Blount, plus FB and whomever emerges from the camp fodder. Lots of good FA choices will still be out there in early July

I actually think they can address this in the Draft if they choose to. There will be a DE available when they pick it is just a matter of whether they want to go that route. I'm fine with them taking care of it now if they can but one of Crichton, Ealy, or Tuitt should be there at 29, with Crichton the most likely imo, and they can add him to the rotation with Buchanon if they want.

Pretty much agree, LB is really really thin and it may end up being a priority in the draft. I have come around on Shazier over the past few weeks and would be fine with them taking him high if the other top prospects i want are off the board. he would give them the depth and flexibility at the position they really need. This is as thin as i have seen them at LB in a long long time and I have to think Belichick has a real focus on it going forward.

Almost all the signings will now be around vet minimum. There are a few exceptions but it's late March so everybody on this thread will be cheap. Worthwhile is an entirely different story. I'd like to see a some more depth at safety and DL. Maybe a journeyman guard.

There just aren't any good LB options out there...I hope it is a strong draft for LBs

Yea, I'm with you 100% in regards to the LB corps.

Only, I would hope we would trade back and not just "settle" for a situational backer in round 1. While I think Shazier will be a good pro, I don't see him getting a ton of usage here early to warrant a rd 1 selection, we already have a prototype Will named Jerod Mayo, who has had shackles on his game due to scheme. One of Shazier's projected weaknesses will be changing direction in pass coverage and I think that's the role we need filled the most. Would be more than happy with Christian jones or Jordan Tripp later.

Shazier isn't at the top of the list of prospects I have for 29 and trading out of the pick is also a decent option in this draft if they can get good value for the pick, however everything I have read on Shazier indicates that he should be a really good pro and ultimately that's all I care about, and right now this team is perilously thin at LB and adding a quality LB with his skill set would be a good move and they would get a lot of use from him right from the start. I don't see him as project and think he is actually one of the more pro ready prospects in this draft.
