What kind of infection did he have? Mrsa?

Sad but true. A guy no one's seen play on the team, that we don't know will ever be healthy enough to play, is now a huge factor to consider at DT.

Such is the current sad state of the position.

Is that Josh McDaniels in the background?

I though nick caserio was getting his hands dirty

Not true, we were OK last year once Siliga showed up and we're getting Kelly back. We are OK there, not great but not awful. Armstead is a huge potential positive wildcard.

Which begs the question.. why McDaniels? :)

Has Armstead been secretly training all last year to switch over to an offensive position?

Our new stud TE maybe? Hell yeah!

(For the record: Im kidding).

How about some Justin Ellis from Louisiana Tech?

That's great and all and I hope as much as anyone that he turns out to be a solid NFL pass-rusher for us, but I'm not holding my breath anytime soon. Still hope they address this need in either FA or the draft. He's coming back from a year off and never having played a down in the NFL. Tough for me to get too high on him just yet.

Not awful is probably the ceiling at this point, With Armstead's status ranging from our best player to cannot play.

Every team has a combination of bodies at the position. that's what we have.

Some UDFAs, an old guy coming back from injury and a total unknown.

The weakest position on the team until proven otherwise, IMO.

Try changing the title to what the subject actually is about....the current title sucks

Unless you did it for attention and the intent to get others to go in and

lol people still believe in this guy? Clearly photoshopped. My parents told me Armond Armstead wasn't real when I was 8 years old. Sheesh I bet you guys still believe in Slash.

I was thinking more along these lines:

"Boy, I sure could use a starting center this season." - Josh McDaniels

Beyond the bits about him having been off a year, having not played in the NFL, and so on...

This guy's situation most closely parallels Marcus Cannon. MRSA is like getting chemo for cancer, not a broken leg or turf toe. It literally eats muscle tissue, wherever he had it, and its probably hard as hell to work out with it even excepting all the antibiotics and painkillers they put him on.

He is probably going to have a "lost" year where he's mostly the reserve 4th DT while he rebuilds himself athletically. Couple that with him being essentially a rookie and I don't think any fan should be expecting him to be a significant upgrade over Chris Jones this year.

As for people calling for a 5th DT: the Pats started with 3 last year, and never carried more than 4. Why are you projecting 5 DTs? I think the only way Vellano gets on this roster is if Kelly is still hobbling or Armstead has no playing strength, and then he beats out this year's Vellano in camp.

I've always thought Armstead would end up being an LDE anyway. He only seemed to be a DT in CFL because the space between DT and OG/C is bigger than in the NFL.

Good news! !

I'm a big believer in Armstead. He does seem to be our version of Soterberg from the Bruins though

Supporting your perspective: he's listed as a DE on the team roster.

One would think last year is the lost year. Not knowing exactly what he has or anything about MRSA really hard for me to dispute anything you said but I would have to think whatever he had probably did effect his muscle mass and that obviously had to do with his being IRed last year. But this report has him a full go now and who knows how long he has been working back into shape but lets assume he is just restarting building muscle now he has a really long time before TC starts. I would like to think for a pro athlete that is enough time to get fully ready.

Right.. I think that's Joe Judge.

Fair enough, but I hope we all can agree this guy has a much more substantial challenge facing him than any other "mid-round rookie" this team has brought in except Marcus Cannon. Personally I don't think Cannon actually got to NFL-strength until this last year. Even in his 2nd year rush ends sometimes blew through his upfield shoulder like they were going through a turnstile. He was considered to be a very strong point-of-attack blocker in college — so much so many draft profiles projected him to guard — so I attribute much of his early struggles to fallout from chemo.

I agree.

Here's a guy who has played one year of football in the last three years, and that was in the CFL. Where he had six sacks and 43 tackles. There were 23 guys in 2013 with six or more sacks.

He's had two medical issues; both pretty bizarre. He clashed with coaches at USC.

Let's hope he makes the roster and contributes.
