My guess is bringing in as many experienced and big body receivers as they can to have them compete for spots.

That and at this point I'm positive we're just purposely going out of our way to sign guys with no personality, edge or fire(Edelman aside).

I would rather have LaFell and Britt going out for a pass than Matthew Slater.

How many times did that happen last year? No matter how many, it isn't worth adding a WR position. We might just get a bit more health from Amendola, from Dobson, from Gronkowksi or from Thompkins. The only healthy WR we had was Edelman, and I think that he was in a boot in August.

I'm all for more WRs. Competition is always good. The best player or (or sometimes the player who is close but has a higher ceiling) will win camp and make the team.

The net result is only good for the team. This also means more picks to throw at DT/OL/TE

My line of thinking exactly... I would be surprised if we have a draft pick that isnt OL DL or TE

Perhaps you're talking about the first three rounds of the draft.

After that, draft picks could be at any position. For example, we need to develop a backup quarterback.

Sure, unless there's any DB's present, in which case LaFell will either Tebow it and hug his friend Ground or running the other way.;)

Austin Collie:

"Hey Bill, I'm near the phone."

Honestly if Edelman or Amendola go down I want Collie on this team. I know it's selfish but I hope he doesnt get signed anywhere this offseason, lol. One of these two will likely be out for some time.

Guy came in cold off the bench numerous times to catch Welkerish first downs.

Boyce took over kick returning duties before he got hurt. Also for some they think he has more upside than Thompkins.

Is #22 for the Browns Roberto Luongo trying to make a skate save?

LaFell was the first FA signing that I wasn't excited about at all this offseason. This is the second. Britt's knees are trashed.

You got x-rays or something?

He's definitely on the shadow roster for sure.

Collie was reportedly working up to 3-4 hrs before and after practice with Brady, JMcD, and O'Shea in his attempt to pick up the difference in verbiage.

I have no problem whatsoever with Austin Collie as a depth signing who rarely sees the field, but with some players with similar skillset on the team already, I'm not sure there will be room for him.

There's plenty of good WR's in the draft this year, who could probably contribute as much as, if not more than, Kenny Britt, without the attitude or injury concerns.

Except you have to use the pick on them and that means passing on other prospects who might be able to help you more. Britt was first round talent with a 35th round head and the likelihood of him becoming a Patriot, making the team, and being successful is not that high but Belichick is still going to kick the tires and do his due diligence on him, especially given that those low risk high reward gambles have frequently payed off for him. He'll look at him, may sign him, and then allow him to compete for a jib but he won't be countinig upon him and any production would be an added bonus.

Right on the money, bring them in and let them fight it out. This draft is really strong at WR and they may well take one but there is no point leaving it unaddressed and as a need when you can take the steps to make it as good as possible and then upgrade if that works out.

It's obviously much better to have flexibility in the draft than have need dictate your moves, so shoring it up just gives them more leverage in meeting their needs..

God, Kembrel Thompkins just had the 2nd best rookie WR stats in the 14 year BB era. I'm having a problem trying to figure out why so many are ready to summarily discard him for the next shiny new toy.

I agree. I still have high hopes for Thompkins. He needs to reduce his drops but I suspect that several drops were due to rookie jitters. He also needs to improve the consistency and accuracy of his routes. I think he lost Brady's confidence later in the year in this regard. He is a playmaker, though. Reminds me of Ocho. Check out Chad's weak rookie stats - he broke out in year 2.

I am sort of surprised that the Aaron Hernandez debacle hasn't caused them to shy away from the Browner and Britt types.

And that's not a criticism. By surprised, I mean pleasantly surprised.

Browner is an odd one he was added to the NFL enhanced drug program for missing tests while he was in the CFL not NFL. I can't find anything to say he has been arrested or in legal trouble. We shouldn't tar him with the same brush as Britt and certainly not Hernandez.

I like Austin Collie I think he will be a guy we call if we need a guy again but I don't see a need to have him in camp. He worked hard enough to get on board last year I think I would this year if he is needed but he is not gonna beat out Edleman or Amendola.

The impression I have had (right or not) has been of an uncoachable, injured malcontent on a poor offensive team. After so many years he still has not developed into anything like his potential has suggested. Even at his young age, I would have expected more from him come his first pop at free agency but thus far he has underwhelmed to say the least.

However, Schiano and Britt have been very complimentary of each other and perhaps the uncoachable tag is undeserved and bringing him on an unguaranteed deal to show his wares in training camp would not be the worst thing in the world.
