It seems that with Lombardi and Schiano weighing in on Free Agency we have made some moves or are about to make some moves that would not have been considered Belichickian in the past.

I see this as a plus and an extra set of eyes that can see the whole picture. Don't get me wrong I think Belichick does a great job as "GM" but I have to say I am pretty impressed with the 4 of them(Caserio incl.) this offseason.

Yet....both have been in the job market recently!!

They've made exactly ONE move in Free Agency: getting Revis to replace Talib.
Seems like a lot more, but nope...

Woodyard was hopeful talk, but he's with the Titans now.

Browner is...who knows?

And Wilfork wants out.

...for one year with an affordable contract. Not out of character at all, IMO.

I didn't realize that Greg Schiano was part of the Patriots staff now.

Sorry I should have clarified... He has been in Belichicks ear... Was with him during the combine and is a trusted friend

I was really happy when I heard Belichick was bringing on an outside perspective in Lombardi. They needed it badly.

Non-Belichickian would be to have signed Revis for 4 years, 52m with 30m guaranteed.
1 year, 12m is not out of character.

Sure most players that signed for one year here tend to be emotionally troubled that need a prove it year (like Talib's signing last year). Or Moss's first year or Ocho or Haynesworth and tend to be 'will they be able to keep themselves together' gambles.

Revis has no character issues (other than he loves money). He has a small health concern -- much smaller than Talib's health concerns.

I'd consider this 1 year, 12m to be more like giving Asante the franchise tag in his last year here -- it's a slightly below market deal for a great player; with no real expectations that it becomes longer than 1 year.

The upside is you get the best corner in football with a small chance that he loves it so much that he's willing to take 12-14m/year to stay next offseason.
The downside is you get a #1 corner that is a bit overpaid and then you're done with him after the year.

It's not a Randy Moss type steal, but I'm happy with it.

Don't get me wrong I think Belichick does a great job as "GM" .

Really?? "great"? Meh.. I love BB as much as anyone here, but I dunno if i'd classify his GM skills as great.

Maybe, maybe not; we'll see. Many had similar thoughts when Dom Capers was hired in 2008 as a 'special assistant' and DB coach, but it didn't appear that he ever had much significant input.

Sometime when I read this board have to check up top to make sure it is not a Jacksonville or Oakland Discussion board... BB has made some mistakes, but every team has made some mistakes.

Overall BB has done a very good job, aren't we on a run of 14 straight winning seasons??

That is quite impressive in the post salary cap era... perhaps unparalleled in this day and age.

I think this has been one of the most mismanaged UFA periods of the Belichick era. Revis was great but everything else has been poorly planned especially Wilfork. There is no excuse for a player who has been in front of you for a decade to be demanding his release 2+ days into free agency. They should have been restructuring his contract in January.

I can put aside my hommerism for the moment and see that things are not where they used to be and should be in our front office. It is as if they have no open line of communication with their players anymore. Welker, Talib, and now Wilfork, add to that the murdering thug tight end that was pulling drive by shootings in downtown Boston completely unnoticed.

I love this team, I think it is the best organization in pro sports, I think Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the NFL and #2 isn't even close but things are loose around here in recent years and they need to tighten it up.

Tom Brady is the greatest QB in NFL history there would no reason for the team with the best QB in a sport where the QB is the most significant player to have a losing season.

We played in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL over the past decade also.

I am not saying Belichick doesn't do a terrific job I am just saying that Brady makes it very difficult to have a losing season.

I didn't even know Revis went to Rutgers...

Yeah that was impressive no doubt. Cassel is a serviceable NFL QB and the roster was extremely talented, they had gone 16-0 the year before.

I'm not diminishing Belichick I am simply saying it would be surprising if a team with Brady as the QB had a losing record. That is why the winning season streak is not the end all be all in my mind. How many losing seasons has Manning, or Rodgers had? QB is the biggest difference maker in the game and we are fortunate to have Brady.

How did GB and Indy do when their qb's went down?

BB makes plenty of mistakes but make no mistake about it he brings in premium talent whether it be Mankins, Moss, Welker, Mayo, McCourty, Gronk, Talib, Revis and possibly Jones and/or Solder if either one can make a small leap this year.

The Patriots have drafted 54 players since 2008, 31 of them are no longer on the roster, for those of you playing at home that is 57% of the players selected. I labeled Vereen, Ridley, Collins, and Slater as a starter (despite that not really being the case) which gives us 13 starters that came out of the draft since 2008, that is 24% of our picks.
