Does a signing bonus get paid RIGHT away..like when he signs..or at a later date?

I believe the team writes him a check for the signing bonus upon signing, but the money doesn't need to hit the cap right away, it can be worked over the years. However, since signing bonuses are guaranteed, if the contract is terminated early it counts as dead money since the player has already received it.

I could be wrong as I'm the first to admit I'm an idiot when it comes to the cap.

Revis is following the pats protocol...being quiet with the media :D

Deep Threat @DeeepThreat

WRs on Patriots 2014 Schedule: Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Demaryius Thomas, Steve Johnson, Mike Wallace, Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall..

Welcome to Revis island.

Man that's still fun to type even today!

Maybe im getting ahead of myself, but if Revis plays like we all believe he can, do the Patriots consider paying Revis 20 Million in 2015 so they can start franchising him in 2016?

In all likelihood you are losing Wilfork here and with the raising cap year to year 20 Million may not be quite as bad as it looks, especially if Revis becomes core to the defense.

20M? No way. We'll pay him fairly and keep him though

If they did that it would cost $25M to franchise him. Rather than pay him 45 million for two years they could just sign him to a 3-4 year extension for the same amount of money

No..not for $25 mill. That 2nd year will never come into play. He will be a FA again or the pats will sign him to a extension. That 2nd year is just to keep this years cap hit down

Out of curiosity I wonder if plan A all along was to get Revis and let Talib walk. Would have meant the Pats were confident that they'd get him. Might make sense considering Talib seems a little bitter (Signing somewhere "he was wanted"). Talib seemed pretty damn happy about the Pats until FA approached.

Maybe it wasn't plan A. But teams probably had a idea Revis wasn't going to last in TB maybe even a few weeks ago before this news broke to us.

From the sound of it the Broncos offered Revis the same deal Talib got WHILE he was still in TB. So they had a idea

Absolutely agree that the 2nd year $20M will never come into play, that was only to keep cap down and allows Revis to think he is getting a possible 2yr $32M deal and/or $16M a year. I think the Pats will be considering resigning him about halfway through next year if he's healthy. No matter what, I like this signing and they will have two consecutive years with terrific shutdown cornerbacks. Revis is also well respected and doesn't have any off the field issues like Talib.

I doubt it. I think the plan was to try and get Talib to sign for their number and that they had several alternative plans in place if they couldn't, getting Revis imo would have to have been an outlier as plans go as all it was going to take was a draft pick to send Revis elsewhere. However when Revis did become a free agent I think the Patriots knew that Denver was being so aggressive that they had to make a significant move to keep up, and that coupled with Belichick's long term desire to have a CB like Revis led to them ponying up the $$$ and getting it done.

It's a kick in the face for people who believe that BB doesn't make the required moves nor is he flexible.

Frankly, I'm pleased to see both sides came to the party and worked out a reasonable deal for 2014. From there, everything can play itself out and hopefully, a long term extension can be agreed.

Plan A was that Talib accept the patriots offer by March 11 at 4 PM.. I don't think that there was any question with regard that.

Will wilson give up #24 if he stays on the roster?

Awesome! Can someone enlighten me as to why this is a one year deal?

This is the most interesting part of it for me. Revis could have put himself in a Manning like situation of doing the league tour and getting more money than any free agent out there but he chose instead to take a pay cut on a one year deal just to play in New England. 99% of players are going to go for the big bonus and the guaranteed money, but Revis is the rare athlete who trusts his abilities so much that he is willing to go year to year. On the other hand his yearly is so high that a couple of good seasons outdoes the guaranteed money for most player's. Ultimately he got really good money, a shot at a ring, and flexibility to either move on or have ahuge payday next season, not a bad deal but still not the course most would have chosen.

Hearing this news made my day.

As much as I hated Revis when he was on the Jets, I always respected him as one of the best DB's. If he stays healthy it will be a great signing

Denver made a long term commitment to an attractive girl with more than a few warts (Talib).

Pats get a one night stand with a Perfect 10 (Revis)

Haha I saw that last night, good analysis. Don't expect Talib to be in Denver that long at all or a given that Revis is gone after one year but still a good quote from whoever wrote the article.

In reality, all NFL contracts are nothing more than "rentals". As Andrew Brandt noted on today's MMQB:

Although the reported numbers of all these free-agent contracts are splashy, they’re not what they appear to be. Pay no attention to total value; these contracts are essentially two-year deals (that’s the guaranteed portion of the contract) with nonguaranteed salaries in later years at the team’s discretion. In rare cases, portions of the guarantee will extend into the third year. The numbers in the media come from agents, who have every incentive to use the bigger number.

The Pats gave Revis a 1 year deal with an option that they probably will never exercise, but the bottom line is that they now have him in the fold and have control of his situation. If the team wants to keep him, they can almost certainly do so. The Broncos ostensibly gave Talib a "long term" contract, but in reality as Albert Breer has noted it's more like a 3 year $27M deal, and of the $26M guaranteed only the first $12M is fully guaranteed, the remained being only guaranteed for injury, so that Denver could effectively "opt out" after the first year.

The NFL is a rental business.
