Vince Wilfork asks to be released

The Pats had around $17.5M in cap space before signing Darrelle Revis, who's 2014 cap hit is $7M. Releasing Wilfork would free up $18M, giving the Pats plenty of cap space to address WR, OL, and other defensive needs.

Sad, but better that the team moves on without him than continue in limbo. Given his history, it would have been harder for them to release Wilfork. Now, with him asking than when them to do it, things should move quickly.

I would not be surprised if behind the scenes the Pats made it clear that it was restructure, or be cut. But we're giving you the option to take the initiative and ASK to be released rather than have us just cut you. Thank you for your service.

Can't say I blame him, the way Elway is tossing around money I'm surprised Brady didn't ask for his release....$$$$

Do you really think someone is going to throw big money at a 32 yeard old nose tackle coming off a torn ACL?

I'll be honest with you. I wasn't thrilled that wilfork tweeted a few days ago that talib's new contract with denver was "well deserved". It sounded like a shot against the pats.

minor shot (maybe). It came off to me as more of a wistful thinking concerning contract status. Had a feeling it was going to go the down the same path that Seymore did but I was really hoping it wouldn't. I do think that Wilfork had handled it well...not real shots but he had made it known that he wants to be paid . And he should, a top five (three?) DT doesn't have a long self-life and he knows it.

Sad and a little surprised. The Pats really came through for Wilfork on his last contract. I'm not sure if he realizes the the chance they took making him the highest paid NT ever, especially considering his age and size at the time. He's either in for a rude awakening or some sucker is going to overpay for him. Gonna miss the big fella. :(

Raji is off the market
Melton is coming off a knee injury which put him on IR
Hatcher has had one exception season which happened to be in 2013.
Williams - see Hatcher

And all are the same age was wilfork.

factor in the leadership and the 11 mil cap charge doesn't seem to be that excessive especially when consider the Revis deal.

Raji isn't off the market unless you listen to Felger and Mazz who still continue think he accepted the one year, $4 million off from the Packers that he rejected.

Melton had an ACL tear. Rather gamble on an ACL tear than a torn achillies

Hatcher has been a solid player for several years, but became a stud when the Cowboys switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

Williams is a declining stud, boarderline HOF who may or may not have as much left as Wilfork has.

can somebody please send me a link where it says Raji has agreed to the deal offered by Packers. I heard on the Sports Hub that Raji signed but nowhere else

Don't listen to Felger and Mazz. They are clueless on this one. They think Raji accepted the one year offer the Packers offered prior to free agency.... Except he rejected it and became a free agent.

This is not going to end well. :(

I think that it would be a mistake to let him go, IMO.

Does Vince Wilfork REALLY believe that he will make anything close to 11.5million$ if he is released and signs with another team?

NO team is going to pay that money for a 30+ nose-tackle coming off a torn achilles

then again, the way Elway has been throwing money around who knows...we could have a little pats reunion in Denver with welker/talib/wilfork

Great... now the very jersey (throwback red) I'm wearing in my avatar is outdated. WTF.

Big softies like Vince have big hearts and it always seems to come down to this. Impossible not to end up with hurt feelings it seems. Not that I can blame him either. This business can be brutal. It's like a breakup really. Somebody's always going to end up hurt.

actually, your right...he hasn't officially signed with the Packers. everything seems to indicate that they have been close to a one year deal. Raji seems to be hoping for a little better deal so maybe his ears just perked up today.

Hell no, I think Bianca is in a feeding frenzy and Vince is making a catastrophic mistake.

ZING! Good one bro

Look, it's a business; instead of a bunch of fans demanding players show "loyalty", let him do what he wants. Very good chance it won't work out for him; on the other hand, who could blame him for feeling the way he does? Just let him go and move on. I'm not gonna trash Wilfork. He was a pillar of greatness for this team and I'm not going to be a semi-sentient buffoon and start trashing him just because it's come to this. Cut him and move on. Best of luck, Vince.

Disappointed but certainly not surprised once news was reported of his not wanting to re-do his contract.

Not sure Vince is going to see much interest as a free agent until he can demonstrate his Achilles is fine.

Sad to see him go, but he was eating too much of the cap.

Speaking of weight, with Wilfy's family history of diabetes I hope he's been doing his past regimen of swimming workouts for aerobic conditioning. Laps burn megacalories too. No problem to do assuming achilles is recovering well. Best of health to the Wilfork family!

Because he hasn't signed anywhere yet

So did John Elway call him yet? Too soon?
