We. Have. Revis.

So what would things look like if they extended him through 2016 sometime this season?

IIRC, you can't renegotiate immediately.

So the upshot is: One-year deal + exclusive negotiation time at the end of the season for an extention; no franchise tag option; but cap flexibility for another signing or two. I'll take it.

This just keeps getting better. I thought the deal put them up against the cap and left them only a few million to work with only to find out that they still have closer to 8-10 million left to work with before any restructures. They can get the DE and S in here and still have room to work with to address their remaining needs.

I am hopeful that Revis willingness to take the pay cut to come to NE sparks wilingness in Wilfork and Mankins to restructure and give them even more room to get better this offseason.

Because there's the option on Revis' deal, I believe that splits his cap hit, and makes his cap hit $6.5 million for 2014.

Nice if true. Waiting for Miguel to confirm :D

That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it!!!

So Revis' cap hit for 2014 is $6.5-7.0 million and $25-25.5 million ($5 million of which would be dead money if they don't pick up the option) for 2015?

Is that correct?

That might be better on the cap this year, but who would pull the trigger on a $20 million option year? That's just a back-ended 16per.

So they'll probably negotiate something longer term and this give them 5+m this year to spend?

My guess is that Revis wanted a no franchise tag clause and this is a compromise. And it good for the Pats' cap.

The first renegotiation of a veteran contract can take place at any time (i.e., they could do it tomorrow if they wanted).

Nice.

The per-game bonuses are counted on the cap. So Darrelle Revis' cap number for 2014 will be $7 million, with $5 million to carry into '15.

Now, let's restructure Vince's deal and let's go shopping.

Quick look at 2015, Overthecap has the Pats (minus Revis at the minute) spending slightly over $89m, if the cap jumps $10m again that leaves them with what? $51m to use? That's with Adrian Wilson still contributing $1.5m to the number, too!

Jets fans need to learn what "contract extension" is/means

Bills fans think we overpaid. They are just as stupid as Jest fans IMO.

At the risk of being accused of "stalking": From all reports: Wilfork? Possible. Mankins? Impossible.

Depends on what you mean by "restructure."

Mankins would probably agree to converting salary to signing bonus (since it doesn't hurt him), but he won't agree to a pay cut.

Not only the Bills fans, even many neutral fans think that 12m$ Revis is too much.

Just shows how short the memory of some fans is. 2010-2012 Revis was among the best players in the NFL, if not the best. It's basically a one year rental, with the option to extend. Revis has all the leverage and we atleast get a great CB for one year. It's a great fit for both sides.

Wednesday: "Darrelle, we're thrilled to have you as a member of the Pats. You're worth every penny of that $12M."

Thursday: "Darrelle, would you be willing to take a bit of a cut so that we can address some other needs?"
