Re: Demarcus Ware to sign with Denver? [Update: signs 3-yr, $30m deal w/$20m guarante

I didn't say they were poor signings just questionable considering the fact how much money was given to them. Questionable in the sense that if it works out Broncos should be the AFC favorite again although I still don't think it'll be enough to handle those monsters in California and Washington, and if they get injured depth will be an issue for the Broncos

Fair enough. I had edited my post to reflect that.

As always, the devil's in the details. It's perfectly appropriate for posters who approved of prospective signings to change their minds once the terms are revealed. In that vein, the Ward signing was a good one, and they paid too much for Talib (IOW, I wouldn't want my team to have paid as much/more for him). I also am not very much for bringing on an aging pass rusher for 10+ million a season.

And then of course there's the fact that the Miami Heat model of roster construction doesn't seem to work all that well in the NFL.

When the Beaast D. Ware puts Brady on his @ss we'll see if he ain't worth it.

Re: Demarcus Ware to sign with Denver? [Update: signs 3-yr, $30m deal w/$20m guarante

That isn't the case anymore. That money is going to be eaten up by the three contracts just signed. I would expect those three to eat up $20 or so million of the cap. So you are up to $80 million or so and need to sign about 25 more players just to field a 53 man roster. So that will eat up another $20-30 million just to get average players for those positions.

So if the cap next season is set at $145 million and if the new contracts put them around $80 million, plug in some backups (we will say) for $35 million, that puts them at $115 million with (give or take) $30 million left to negotiate new contracts with Miller, Thomas & Thomas. Will probably be close and may not be able to afford all 3 but if that is the case, it only means they performed well and earned a big contract elsewhere.

I'm sure we'll all be blessed with another one of your histrionic, barely coherent posts when it happens.

Ware was way overpaid. Ward was a steal. Talib is a big gamble.

I know this is screwing over the Donkeys for the future, but I really hope the difference between Brady/Manning winning a ring in 2014 isn't BB the GM.

We really need to make a move at CB soon.

"Overpaid" is all relative. If you have cap space (or anticipated cap space if 2015 is Manning's last year), then why not?

Denver saw holes, particularly on defense, that cost them a chance at the lombardi. Instead of concentrating on perceived "value", they are filling those holes.

The way the cap is increasing year over year, do you really think these signings are going to put them in cap hell?

I certainly dont.

Lets undermine good signings by other Teams so typical of you.:spygate:

Well put fumbrunner! While the signings may be questionable or even gambling a bit, as a Denver fan I am excited to see the brass doing what it can in order to improve.

Denver got embarrassed by Seattle and is doing what they can to hopefully get back to the SB and ensure the result isn't the same.

Re: Demarcus Ware to sign with Denver? [Update: signs 3-yr, $30m deal w/$20m guarante

If anything, the Jets thing just proves that the playoffs are a crapshoot and that very often the best team - even a super team - doesn't always win. The 2010 Jets really had no business beating the Patriots. But they did.

You build a team to get to the playoffs. A better team gets better odds in the playoff roulette, but even that's 16 games of injuries away. And then it's still a crapshoot.

The Jets were at least aggressive in bringing in defensive talent in Free agency. Sanchez Is what held that team back. They deserved to beat us because we had no outside receiving threat. once the defensively flooded the middle of the field, we were toast.

I'd like to know just where the hell all of this money is coming from on the Broncos, i was operating under the assumption that they were going to be in trouble anyway coming up here real soon, now they sign 3 of the top free agents in the class in the first 23 hours of Free Agency.

I know the Season isn't won in Free Agency, History tells us that, but you still can't help but become irritated seeing the Broncos Load up their already impressive roster with Players who should be out of their financial grasp.

Better hope they can stay healthy. If they can, you're probably looking at a top five defense. If Talib's hip flares up and Ware's issues from the last two years flare up again, you've pissed away a bunch of guaranteed money for players that are a shadow of themselves. That said, the moves are solid ones. Before they signed with the Broncos, everyone wanted T.J. Ward and Talib back in New England. All in all, I think Ward is going to be your prize. SS's that are good in coverage and lay the lumber like he does are assets on a defense this day in age. Just ask Kam Chancellor and Demaryius Thomas.

Re: Demarcus Ware to sign with Denver? [Update: signs 3-yr, $30m deal w/$20m guarante

the broncos have around 3000 yards of offense missing (decker and moreno)

so far, they've replaced the DRC/bailey/ihenacho with ward and talib

they replaced philips with ware

the improvement is not as big as everyone makes it out to be, and honestly, I'm not sure ware will be any kind of improvement over philips at all

I think they've simply set themselves up for unreasonable expectation without getting a whole lot better

2010 Pats team overachieved IMO one of my favorite teams

I would say they are up to their old tricks...

The Denver Broncos are still paying the price for skirting the league's salary cap rules during the franchise's glory years. This year the team lost their third-round pick in the draft and will pay a $950,000 fine for undisclosed salary agreements made with select players from 1996 to 1998. The Broncos also had to surrender a third-round pick and pay a fine of slightly less than $1 million in 2001 under similar circumstances for contracts that were awarded for former Bronco quarterback John Elway and running back Terrell Davis.

Funny how they skirted obvious rules and gained a cleary advantage and lost a pair of third round picks! They have a new capologist, a former agent, so God knows what he is writing into these contracts.

It is impossible to predict how much it will take to add 25 players to the roster unless all of them get the veteran minimum. You can predict the rookies, but with the marquee level guys getting much more, so will the mid tier and lower tier guys. So you might have to pay $3 million for a back up rotational guy. Which means that those 25 players (excluding the marquee guys) could cost the Broncos $40-50 million.

Talking about a team's next year cap when they have so few people on the roster is a little misleading. Too many unknows.

To those in BB we trust better hope that D Revis ain't out of the Patriots financial grasp.

Truthfully CB isn't even enough now, I don't think. What if we get Revis? We've basically replaced Talib who we had last year. And that wasn't enough to get to the big game. So we need a CB and all the stuff we needed before Talib went to the Donkeys. If we lose Edelperson, now we need even more. We also need to replace Spikes who was the main reason teams couldn't run on us.

This is going to be a rough offseason/transition/year.

Re: Demarcus Ware to sign with Denver? [Update: signs 3-yr, $30m deal w/$20m guarante

Say what you want but the Broncos are doing a pretty good job filling in the holes of their roster.

Regardless I am starting to see how this story will end for the pats: They won't make any major signings, they will continue pick through the NFL scrapheap for guys that will play for cheap that were once good players in 2008.

I agree. A 33 year old Welker is going to be expected to replace some of Decker's production and Talib/Ware have injury problems. Ward was a good signing. I still don't know who is going to replace Moreno/Decker.

well....that's all the broncos have done......replaced people who are gone

talib for DRC? there's not a whole bunch to say this is a substantial improvement
ward for ihenacho? ok....improvement
ware for philips? philips was a better player last year

the broncos are also without decker and moreno

Revis is an Island Talib is not. Revis would shut down one side against any WR Big or a small TY Hilton schooled Taib so did Steve Smith and Josh Gordon. Revis would be more effective against all three.
