Patriots hosting Panthers WR Brandon Lafell

My buddy who is a big Panthers fan says he has good hands, but struggles to create separation and get open.

Your buddy is correct. Lafell would be another possession receiver that doesn't operate well outside the numbers. I would take the signing, of course, because it's not like the team is flush with options at WR, but I do have other preferences.

Could be a decent red zone target which is what the Pats were missing. Wouldn't be a flashy signing, but he had a decent year last year. Could be a decent #2 if the Pats think Dobson can be #1.

Inconsistent player but what do I know. If this is depth and competition great. If he is viewed as a starter there are better options IMO.

Hopefully this is just to make Steve Smith's adjustment easier.

To me, this signing, if it were to happen, would be more of a head scratcher. You have Dobson and Thompkins who have developed, and will hopefully continue to develop, some form of chemistry with Tom Brady. Why sign LaFell if he brings the same type of attributes as players already on the current roster?

What baffles me even more is, Carolina is on the verge of building a team that will consistently contend, yet they're releasing Steve Smith and presumably allowing LaFell to walk too. To me, that screams buyer beware! Why would a team just allow their young #2-3 WR walk when they are trying to surround Cam with weapons?

If you're going to bring in a WR with similar attributes as players already on the roster, I'd hope for someone like Nicks who is still young, but also an established big game receiver with bug game experience.

Sorry guys, I don't see the rationale in this potential signing.

It is about competition and depth.

Points scored by NE in Patriots last 3 playoffs losses....17,13,16

Let the Lafell era begin:)

Love me some....

Well said I would prefer a young guy like Nicks.

It's called 'we have 90 roster spots to fill and, within reason and the cap, we should aim to fill each of those 90 spots with the best possible 90 players e can lay our hands on'.

He might not even make it to Week 1, but he's a very, very good guy to bring in and fill your 90 man roster with.

You don't need to see the logic right now. We may well have 10-15 WRs in camp!

Ehh, would be a waste of money.

And low end talent

good camp body to duplicate our opponents tall receivers similar to Tebow's role last year when he helped game plan for mobile QB's

Can someone tell BB that we are in 2014 and not 2004 I think he has his times mixed up. If you have holes you have to agressively fill them you cannot just sit and watch good players come and go off the market. The fiiting a square peg in a round hole days are over.

Lafell is very similar to a younger Michael Jenkins, or perhaps Brandon Lloyd. Great hands, excellent blocker, isn't particularly fast and doesn't separate real well. Unlike Jenkins, but more like Lloyd, he has a reputation for being a good jump-ball receiver as well. Good #3 type guy. If the Patriots brought him in and Edelman back, and Dobson made some solid strides this year, and Amendola stays healthy... they could have a very good receiving corps. That's a lot of iffy, but I don't see any way to avoid iffy at this point anyhow. There's no Calvin Johnson or Randy Moss available.

LaFell's not bad, I'll take him. He's not great by a long shot, but a big body at WR is something that was sorely missing last year. He, Dobson, and Gronk would be a pretty fierce red zone offense.

A solid meh player who may not even make the team.

Was thinking the same thing, kinda like this year's Jenkins. Pats may have 15+ mill cap space, but doesn't look like they will be spending it on any impact player.
