Broncos sign Aqib Talib

If he hits the open market, he probably won't get $16 million a year.

Oakland is reportedly out of the Revis market.

Didn't Revis agent states that the player will not play for Oakland? I read that yesterday.

If he hits the open market, he's definitely going to get around that area. Look at what guys like Shields and Talib have gotten. Revis is CLEARLY better than either of them. So we can start by assuming it's going to be north of $10M, and that's lowballing it. Now move to the next step which is the fact that Revis is going to be in the position to pick his team, which means that he's going to the highest bidder if history is any indication with him. There are teams out there, like one in our division that used to have him, which have more cap space than the Pats and also have the willingness to spend it. He'll go to one of those teams and will not come here. The Pats, meanwhile, are going to go bargain basement shopping and if it doesn't work out (which has been the case more often than not recently), they're going down in flames in the playoffs again and Brady turns 38 the next season. The good news is that the team they lose to will probably get raped by the far superior NFC team they play, like the Seahawks.

This team does not make the playoffs because of their personnel and free agency prowess. They make the playoffs because Brady is the GOAT QB and Belichick is one of the GOAT coaches. But Belichick the GM has been hurting the other two in recent years. The Pats may have more of a plan than the "bargain basement" shopping one that they are more known for doing recently. But, until I see it, I'm not buying it. 4:00 will come and go, the Bucs will cut Revis, and the Pats will not be the team to sign him. That's what I'm calling.

Why the hell would I care how CBS had them ranked? I had the top 4 ranked, in no particular order, as

Grimes
Talib
Davis
Shields

and I made that clear before the draft.

Did you rank him top 4 in this years free agency class or the league?

right now, the broncos are still weaker than they were the last time they played the pats.........as much as they have signed, the loss of decker is still bigger, and they will lose him. and by the looks of things, will likely lose thomas next year

I don't know, because I don't know the alternative plans the Patriots had, and I don't have all the details of the contract. I do know that, at first blush, the contract is in line with what the other top CBs got, and that's a fair contract for Talib. Talib was a top 4 corner in this draft. Talib's getting paid like a top 4 corner in this draft.

Lets say that the back up plan is to go with what they currently have on the roster, a jag free agent or a draft pick, would you then give him that contract?

I am astounded at the level of homerism and denial around here.

SB39 is the most sensible realist in the entire thread.

So many that are satisfied and happy with "winning the division" so often. Uh, yeah, as if that is some great accomplishment when you are the only team with a HOF QB and the three other teams are floundering in QB hell this entire time. How many QBs have started for the other three teams in Brady's career? How many coaches have been fired with those other teams during this time (when they suffered the ultimate failure of having total suck at QB)?

It is undeniable how important this position is and yet everyone wants to sing the praises of BB religiously while he has had one of the best situations ever set up for a coach. It wasn't his "genius" that landed the Pats Brady. It was pure coincidental luck.

How was he doing with Bledsoe? Hmm? People forget that (conveniently).

Sure 2008 was impressive coming off a 16-0 record, but how many of those starters were either drafted before BB was the head coach or attained as known commodity free agents in their aging years that made that **** happen?

Who can deny the team has fallen off greatly in talent since the core of that team retired?

Yet Tom is getting older. Year after year the plan is to build for some "future" while Tom is getting older. How many years does he have left? Why isn't the strategy to go all in before he is gone? WTF? It is sad and embarrassing.

Gronkowski, Mayo, Wilfork, Kelly, Vollmer, Spikes, Hernandez.

Yeah, keep blaming the "lack of talent" from the Front Office aspect for why the Patriots lost in AFCCG, thus completing an utter failure last year.

*****BTW, SimpleTruth, take another look at that list.

Do you see something there?

Ask someone who knows and they'll point out to you that 5 of those 7 (all Pro-Bowlers, btw) are players the Patriots FO had EXTENDED, MULTI-YEAR contracts and were among the 10 highest players at their position in the NFL.

But I'm sure it's easier NOT to tax the mind and just pour out emotional knee-jerk reactions........

I don't like losing Talib either but he isn't worth 9.5 million a year. The Broncos have a different philosophy than the Pats. They are mortgaging their future to win now. This is a great philosophy if all of your players stay healthy throughout the season. When the window closes on the Broncos their salary cap is going to be a mess.

Wait.... Are you seriously pointing to Broncos health as an issue because of these signings after all the issues the Patriots have had with health in recent years?

Come on. The moment you wrote that, given the context of being a Patriots fan, you had to have known you were trying to justify a bad position.

And when the Broncos window closes, they'll have a $20 million dollar QB salary coming off the books to open up the cash lines.

And the Pats are even weaker the last time they played the Broncos, the Pats pretty much were never in that game after Talib went down, a player whom the Pats no longer have on their roster. Decker was pretty much useless against the Pats last season. The Broncos will not lose Thomas next year, I am pretty sure of that.

Lets say that the back up plan is to go with what they currently have on the roster, a jag free agent or a draft pick, would you then give him that contract?

As long as I was happy with the contract breakdowns and wasn't getting at least another elite safety to help offset the potential loss.... absolutely.

Right, CBS rankings doesn't matter, yours does, got it. That doesn't change what I said. Your statement was incorrect.

... would you people please stop acting like the sky is falling; a healthy Gronk, Mayo, Wilfork, Kelly will wonders to this team; Gronk alone might of won us the AFCCG last year.

Does it suck to loose Talib, HELLLLL yeah, are we doomed this year, NOOOPEEEE

I will say, though, that if this team bucks the bargain basement trend and actually signs Revis while getting Woodyard and using the draft to add a DE to the rotation along with maybe Easley as a 3-tech and a head hunting safety like Bucannon (or someone big with range like Exum or McGill), this defense will be a lot better than it was last year. If Revis signs with this team, I will come into this thread and admit, in big bold letters, that I am a mega ***hole.

You pulling one location out of your ass doesn't invalidate my post in the slightest. You pulling a million locations doesn't do it, either, because it was my take, not CBS's take. Heading into FA, I had (again, in no particular order)

Talib
Grimes
Davis
Shields

pegged as the top 4 CBs, with Verner as a more limited player. Judging by their contracts, I seem to have nailed it.

Conveniently excluding the highly rated CB ( out of your top 4)because he doesn't help your argument doesn't exactly "nail" it. But whatever gets you through the day I guess. Lets just agree to disagree.

Is Dunning-Kruger Irae really arguing that the Pats need to just pay Talib whatever the Broncos did no matter what? Even Broncos fans think the contract is silly money. This is like sports radio talk stupidity of the highest order "gotta counter their bold moves with some bold moves to be bolder. BOLD MOVES."

It's been one day, and a GM who is literally brain damaged has upgraded DRC on a terrible defense at a ridiculous cost. Once again and always lol Deus.

If the Patriots pull a few quality signings (not necessarily big money, but quality), the board will calm down. If the Patriots pull off the Revis thing, this board will party like it just won the Super Bowl, and the Jets boards will melt down.

Yesterday was a bad day for the Patriots. Today's a new day. We get to rant and/or cheer all over again. And that's what sports are about.

Hopefully Amendola returns in kind the Welker hit to Talib back again to Talib when we play them next year;)
