Edelman offered 3-year deal, he opts to test free agency

Last I heard was Andrew Hawkins was in Pats backup plan if Edelman leaves.

I'll go on a limb here and say he got low-balled....

This front office just doesn't like to pay guys.

Except Gronkowski, and Hernandez, and Wilfork, and Mankins, and....

Where the heck does this idea come from? This FO has consistently shelled out to retain young players who are special.

Was the deal 3 years/14 M/ 7 guaranteed and incentives up to 21 confirmed?

I thought that was a very fair deal for JE and with many GMs saying that he is a product of NE's system and said to be not as valuable to other teams I thought it was pretty spot on. I find it hard to believe he will get a better contract than that on the FA market.

Where does he end up? Houston?

This front office just doesn't like to pay guys.

Yet they have paid guys like Matt Light, Logan Mankins, Tom Brady, Sebastian Vollmer, Mike Vrabel, and even Ty Law and Asante Samuel. Not to mention Rodney Harrison and Rosie Colvin.

People seem to forget that the Pats HAVE paid guys. In fact, the Pats have been at or near the cap just about every year since Belichick got here. Which means they ARE paying guys..

What the Pats don't generally do is OVER-PAY for the players the fans want because fans typically want the "Big Splash" where as BB knows that he's got to build a TEAM and that means top to bottom. 60-70 players..

The team has plans for other players. If you don't fit into that plan by taking dollars the team has allocated to other positions, then you don't fit with the plan. Question the plan if you want, but if the plan is good, not following it hurts you.

well, Edelman I think we can replace...we already have Amendola...and there are other WR's out there we could sign who can help us like Golden tate, emmanuel sanders.

But, there is no adequate replacement for Talib...unless we sign Verner.

I dont understand why this front office needs to be so cheap with guys...who are we saving cap space for? brady has another 2-3 years left. we cant keep handi-capping him with so-so rosters and expecting him to make chicken salad out of chiecken-Sh#@

it's time to give him a defense, give him some targets and try and win it.

If you have evidence the Patriots FO was cheap with Edelman, please provide it.

It comes from derpy posters who trot out the same lame canard every year during FA.

Just because JE is going to free agency doesn't mean he won't be back though I don't believe that. And just because NE didn't sign him doesn't mean they won't bring in another WR who can take his spot.

Not my first choice, but maybe a potential legit outside guy like Hakeem Nicks on an incentive filled deal.

We might have an inside guy alreayd in Amendola, Nicks on a deal built around motivation to produce, and Dobson outside could be a pretty legit trio.

COULD be. I'm not saying its perfect, but it makes sense from a standpoint of filling the roles with players who fit them, instead of having 5'11 guys on the outside again.

I met him in a club down in Foxboro
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
See-oh-el-aye cola
he walked up to me and he asked for my pants
I asked him his name and in a dark brown voice he said Dola
D-oh-el-aye Dola da-da-da-da Dola

Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when I squeezed him tight I nearly broke his spine
Oh my Dola da-da-da-da Dola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why he walked with a limp and ran like in sand
Oh my Dola da-da-da-da Dola da-da-da-da Dola
Pearls before Swine Mr. Joker.

I applaud thee.

Absolutely false.

Arrington received about $4 million more than he should have.

If you all remember last year, the Pats made a better offer than the one that Welker accepted, his agent overestimated the market.

So are the Patriots supposed to wait for Edelman to test the market, or move one?? I suspect they will move on...

Then Felger, Borges and the rest of the contrarians will start their predictable behavior...

Edelman hasn't ruled out a return to the Patriots. But again, the market will determine how feasible that is. Sides plan to talk more.

Hope he'll be quick though, because this team does not wait for anyone.

Great post.

One could argue that we've arguably overpaid for Logan Mankins. Wes Welker got nearly $10M in his last contract with the Pats. Randy Moss got paid. Adalius Thomas got paid. Vince Wilfork got paid. Mayo got paid. Gronk got paid. And we're paying now for paying Aaron Hernandez.

All good teams have the discipline to put a value on a player and stick to it. Just because a player decides to test Free Agency hardly means that the team is "cheap".

that is true...Edelman tested the market last year and then re-signed with the pats..

the only thing is, you would think Edelman would know his value from the legal tampering period. The whole point of that is that players find out their value on the open market.

IF plan B includes E. Sanders they are setting themselves up for a Huge Dissapointment poor Brady.

The funny thing is, if they give Edelman a big contract and keep him, then he gets hurt like he has 3 out of 4 seasons in the NFL, fans will be screaming "They paid a ridiculous contract for Amendola 2.0!"

One good season and suddenly losing Edelman means this team just doesn't care about winning anymore

Mankins? The guy who held out for half a year and ripped into the team for not paying up? The Wilfork negotiations were ugly too and Gronk and 'andez were extensions.

I don't really have a strong opinion on this. The only guys I wish they kept were Samuel and Vinatieri but I wasn't really heartbroken about either. Oh, and Welker but he was being a p.i.t.a IMO so that doesn't really bother me either.

Oh look the "Pats are cheap!!!!!" trolls are out in force again

How can a team that spends near enough every available cent in cap space be cheap?

Eh, I don't like overpaying for small slot receivers anyway.
