Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

Reported the offer was 3/14 with 7 guaranteed, with up to 21 with escalators.

If that's true I think is a fair offer based on escalators which i think Edelman can reach if he stays healthy like last year. Again thats a fair offer for a guy with upside.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

Seems like a fair deal for both sides. I don't think its a matter of another team throwing all that much money at him, I don't think he would go to a Cleveland or perennial loser just to get a big contract and have very little security. Plus, he seems to like it here and loves playing with Brady (two of them worked together yesterday). I think it gets done.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

Should we all tweet at him? remind him how much NE loves him.

Couldn't hurt. I'm going to now that you mention it.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

You have no details on the conditions of the escalators.

So between $4.33 to $7 million. That means he'll likely make about $5-6 million per year.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

I don't want to lose Edelman as punt returner, almost more than as a receiver. I wish they would've wrapped him up earlier. But "assigned value" is what the Pats are all about and we fans just have to live with it.

That's the part I hate, but its what works out over the long run.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

It depends if Edelman is looking at a contract built around escalators he would be best remaining here. The Patriots offense gives him the best chance to succeed.

Also knowing we have Guys who Cannot stay Healthy in this Offense Edelman would be a fool to pass that up. He benefited from the injury prone group last year.

That's what the Pats want you to do- and why they let this info leak out today.

Hopefully Edelman feels the homeward tug.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

Decent offer but he can definitely get more on the open market. Tough call for Edelman, does he want to stick with Brady or go after the cash. If i were him i would take my chances with free agency, he would be heading towards 32 when his next deal comes up and have no chance to make much money on it, so it is now or never and there are teams that have the extra money who would love a really good slot receiver who can return punts.

Overall a smart offer by the Patriots if accurate, a decent deal that doesn't hurt them much and allows them plenty of room to keep getting work done in free agency. Hopefully Edelman wants to stay in NE badly enough to sign it, we'll see?

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

I don't think that Edelman would take this. He may or may not ever get the another chance at a big contract. IMHO, he will take a contract with more than $7M of guaranteed money. The contract suggested might be $1M, $3M, $4M of salary and a $6M bonus.

Obviously, much depends on the bonuses. But even so, the prospect of a higher guaranteed amount will be tempting.

Obviously, Brady having the same agent helps the team. The difference is that Brady gave a huge discount after making lots money playing the game.

Reported the offer was 3/14 with 7 guaranteed, with up to 21 with escalators.

I don't know about that. I would be all over that if I was Edelperson. He's not a downfield game breaker.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

But I hope we don't overpay, either. IMO, the rumored Andre Roberts deal to Washington (4 years/$16M, $8M guaranteed) sets a baseline for both Edelman and Emanuel Sanders. I don't know if I'd pay more than $5M/year AAV.

God I hope we don't spend 5 mill or more on Edelman. Too easy to replace to take that much risk on a guy with one even decent season at WR.

Very fair offer if accurate. I think the pats nailed his value.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

That's the part I hate, but its what works out over the long run.

Thats because of a few reasons.

-Fans are emotional, the team is conducting business.
-The team knows plan B, fans do not
-Fans typically view a player leaving as a void without recognizing someone steps in every time.

To be honest, that's a better offer than I thought he would get, even if the majority of the incentives are unlikely to be earned. I do really like the idea of a heavily incentive-laden contract, since I think the two major hurdles have to be:

1) He has one full, healthy year in the NFL
2) It's unlikely that he'll ever be targeted again as much as he was in 2013, so the volume stats should be expected to drop.

Based on that, the Pats are probably less willing to pay him what you'd normally give a guy with his catches and yards, and one way to bridge that gap is with a ton of incentives that would be reached by hitting roughly the same level of production that he got in 2013. I still think that offer's pretty high, though, if those are in fact the numbers.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

Why should a player show loyalty to a team? When he can be cut at anytime with out getting his salary? It is sports! Loyalty is out the window. The low draft picks/udfa get one chance at a big payday so damn right he should take his time to see what else is out there.

Agreed but in a quality organization like this one, there is value in staying. Each person places different, and in some cases no, monetary value on that.

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

There is pent up demand. The cap increase (and forecast of future increases) put a lot of money out there. The stated offer makes sense on value for the patriots. The offer makes sense given the cap situation a month ago. The question is the new market.

What makes you think anyone would offer more than that?

Re: Edelman offered 3-year deal, Pats waiting for answer

if at offer is valid he'd be mad to refuse it. I don't think he'll get a better offer. Unless the ghost of Al Davis is working for another front office.
