Scar talks regarding team's personnel needs

Good article, Scar will be missed by the team and by the fans...

Colder than a witches teetaa down here in C Town by the sea , eh Darryl?

Scar must know a little more than any of us do about the state of the D tackles going forward. Could it be the Pats will pick one early? I'm 100% on board with that.

Linebacker? Obvious?

Surprised he said linebacker. With three clear starters you'd think that wouldn't be the case.

This was my favorite part;

“I think Bill does a good job educating the players about how to respond to certain questions,’’ Scarnecchia said. “Clearly, there’s so many examples where it sounds like the players were cloned by Bill . . . but his focus as a head coach is the final product. You can’t have people going in all these other directions. So he has a plan how to deal with things.

“I know you’d love to hear it, but if you heard it, we’d have to eliminate you.”

Belichick is fanatical about leaving no stone left unturned, and coaching his players how to respond to media questions is another example.

I remember Pepper Johnson saying the same thing about Belichick in his book, Won For All.

Not too surprised by LB being listed as a need. The organization puts importance on depth. At LB you have the 3 likely starters, but one is coming off a major injury, and there is not even a serviceable back-up on the roster.

He's going to disappointed to find out Seinfeld's been off the air for 16 years.:D

Offensive line is not one of the greatest personnel needs but linebacker is?

SeaBass had a dislocated knee not a broken leg? Ouch.

Well, Collins is still raw, Hightower looked better at the end of the year but still is what he is and Mayo was hurt with Spikes and Fletcher probable FA's. After that it's the like's of White, Beauharnais and Davis with there 10 total tackles. If we're running a 3-4 at times it's pretty thin pickens' actually.

A local station should sign him up to be an analyst during the season.

Sounds good to me Scar. Make this front seven deep, talented, and versatile.

That's how rumours get started. It was a dislocated ankle according to Scar. :D

OK guys I was there last night and let me put to rest any value in his comment about Dline or LB being a need. He was very Patriot like in the way that he deflected specific questions like this and his answer to this was fair but also very obvious he was not going to throw his own Oline or really anyone on Offense under the bus. I really think his answer had more to do with where the D was at come the end of the year rather than where it will be with certain guys coming back from injury. It was the obvious spot as he said because there were rookies playing in those spots and mostly UDFAs.

I am glad even an Offensive coach is bringing up strengthening the D as a priority.

Hightower and Spikes are thumpers that are basically two down LB's. They would be perfect if this were the 90's or even early 2000's but, in a pass happy league, they have no business on the field on third downs. Mayo can cover and Collins is an athlete that was trying to learn his way into a new system. But the team does have needs at LB, especially if Spikes is gone. DE needs an actual pass rushing rotation and there is a need at DT, so I agree with Scar.

My impressions from the night. Sorry if they are a little scattered:

1) First off he has to be the most humble and content person I have ever met. I think this in part explains why he coached so long in one spot and never really tried to aspire to HC. He was surprisingly funny see the comment about having to eliminate the crowd if he went into any further detail or when asked if there was anything BB learned from him a flatout blunt "NO" was his answer. And he was extremely kind at one point inviting a few late comers to grab a seat as they were hesitant to walk right in when they were late and also told a mother not to worry one bit about her baby who was fussing about a little.

1A) Humble - I asked him about Stephen Neal and if he gets any sort of satisfaction out of coaching up such a good player from virtually no where as he was a wrestler in college. He deflected all credit to Neal himself and went into a story about how he started on D and was getting manhandled by the O they could push him wherever they wanted and they almost gave up on him but figured they would try him on O first and they thought he did well but was still very raw and at one point Philly(??) claimed him and after bringing him in they realized he was raw and let him go to. The Pats grabbed him back quick and made sure no to lose him again.

1B) Content - He seems to very happy in his retirement thus far and happy with everything he accomplished and when asked about how 07 would eat at him he spoke of it as part of his whole story and success and failures are part of it all and that you have to take it all as a whole and it is an interesting take that I think we all miss out on at times as we thurst for the next one. As painful as 07 or any of the losses are they are part of it and in his case he coached 40 something years and years and in working toward his 3 SB wins he had some bumps along the way and they dont take away from the ultimate success of his whole career.

2) He was very hestitant to get into specifics like who he felt was his best OLinement and who maybe gave him trouble. When asked about his opionion on the coaches he said they were all great and refused to asnwer when asked who he thought the best was or his favorite was. But he did get into specifics about his role and the grind and it was interesting to hear especially as he went thru his daily routine on a day like today predraft and offseason. Basically just sitting at a desk starring at film all day evaluating your own team and potential draft prospects. Something he said he would not miss and it was kind of a reminder that while the game is great and their jobs are fun there are still hours upon hours of hard grinding work that isn't much better than any other job. He did say it was still football and something he loved which makes moments like that easier but still a grind.

3) Someone asked what he would miss most implying that Steve Young talks about the comratrie being something he missed most but Scar did not go there and in fact kind of made out to be a small part of being a coach. Obviously you get to know the guys and the comrartie was there but as a coach you have to be careful to keep yourself as in charge and not a friend. What he said he would really miss obviously other than the games itself was teaching and instructing and he even joked his favorite parts were the parts the players hate the most. Being in the meetings and instructing the players and instructing them on the field.

4) I guess I will end with his comments on Matt Light the comedian. He told a story of the first time he met him where Light tried to convince him that he had Narcolepsy and the Scar said he played along and asked hiim what it was and his basic diagnosis of the problem was that it was a sleeping problem where he would sometimes fall asleep in meetings. He also mentioned a prank he pulled on the coaching staff where he bought something that was messing up the monitors in the coaches office and they couldn't watch film.

if I think of anything else I will add it.
