Re: Patriots Salary Cap Picture - 2/20/2014 Update - How the Pats can get under the c

That is freaking amazing work right there. Thanks, Miguel!
Really, bravo!

I think I recently read that Mankins was open to adjusting (kind of surprised me, even though it makes sense for him), but I can't find it.

I hope for option 3c for Wilfork, meaning he can still play.
Hope they don't cut Kelly.
Hope A. Wilson proves he isn't worth cutting.
Expect they might restructure Gregory.
Gost would be a fool not to take an extension, given the potential for kicking roles to be diminished.

Thanks for the very kind words.

4.) Convert $4.5 million of Mankins’s $6.5 million salary into a signing bonus – cap savings of $3 million while pushing out $1.5 million of signing bonus proration to the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

So what is the negative on doing something like this? Does it increase his cap hit in future seasons?

I hope we keep Wilfork around Kelly around. They were great early on and DTs are incredibly tough to find. I agree on Wilson, although lets see how he does in OTAs. I agree about Gost.

Yes, it does.

His 2015 cap hit would go from 11 million to 12.5 million.
His 2016 cap hit would go from 7 million to $8.5 million.

That's fine by me. It would give the Pats two seasons to either draft or sign a replacement for him. Converting that money into a signing bonus will work just fine for both sides. Not sure about Wilfork's future. As much as it pains me to say it, I think he might be cut. Hard to see a man of his size whose job depends on putting so much stress on his legs recovering from an injury like that.

Incredible effort Miguel!
Just curious if you have ever been offered any opportunities by any NFL team? Or by media (besides PatsFans.com)? Are you looking to turn this "hobby" (lack of a better word) into something more?

Re: Patriots Salary Cap Picture - 2/20/2014 Update - How the Pats can get under the c

This is all worth a bookmark - thanks Miguel!

I guess it was a few weeks ago and there was a lot of talk about just being something like $7 million under the cap citing some cap estimates by those obviously not as thorough a Miguel

After listening to Miguel for a few years, while I didn't have the complete picture it always seems to me that a team like the Patriots, which generally keeps its cap health in good shape, ultimately has the wherewithal to afford just about any player and players they truly want (that doesn't mean they always get them of course)

So is it possible to bring back Talib and Edelman and further improve the offense and defense? You betcha

Who Belichick targets and what he values them at are another question - but he's got the room to improve the team if he wants to spend some $

"They" were not great early on....at all.

Kelly was good early on. Wilfork was bad early on.

This revisionist history is incredible.

Re: Patriots Salary Cap Picture - 2/20/2014 Update - How the Pats can get under the c

There obviously has been a lot of talk around here about how much cash the team can really have and as Miguel is excellent at what he does there is no question to me that we can get that much money so the only question I have is how realistic is it to think we will go after all of that 30 mil?

How much gets pushed into the future to get us down to -30 mil? How does this relate to other cash shifting this team has done in the past? How much do the players have to give and/or how many have to be cut to get there (and are we sure the players will give it back and are we sure the team would cut the player)?

No and No
Are you looking to turn this "hobby" (lack of a better word) into something more?

I would love to but not at a lower salary than I am currently making.

I thought Kelly exceeded expectations - great pocket-pusher.

Wilfork had some bad moments, I agree, but I note that hteir run defense went to absolute crap when he went down, so he must have been doing something right!

Re: Patriots Salary Cap Picture - 2/20/2014 Update - How the Pats can get under the c

I was looking at Over The Cap where they show the patriots to be $7.348M under the cap. Obviously, I like your $10.887M number much better.

Do you know the reason for the difference?

Thanks for the very kind words.

More revisionist history....he didn't have bad moments. He was bad...period.

"Wilfork was handled pretty well by the Jets' Vladimir Ducasse. Yes, Vladimiar Ducasse. It was noted in Greg Bedard's notes published Friday.
Wilfork struggled mightily with that in the first two games, to the point that Jets guard Vlad Ducasse completely handled him on Thursday night. This is something to watch because the Patriots are basically playing a three-man tackle rotation with Wilfork, Tommy Kelly (who also tired against the Bills) and undrafted free agent Joe Vellano."

Unrealistic. It's just a projected max #.

The article answers how many and who has to be cut to get to $30M. Not sure at all the team would do all the cuts; I'd be completely shocked.

Note that Miguel does not get to $30M in his current predictions. His plan does not involve a massive player bloodbath, just one casualty, Sopo where I assume he feels we have other less expensive younger productive alternatives.

I am including credits for Fanene and Lloyd in my adjusted cap number.

Patriots Salary Cap Picture ? 2/20/2014 Update ? How the Pats can get under the cap by 25 to 30 million :patriots Salary Cap

pretty much answers your questions.

The Pats have been restructuring deals for the entire BB tenure.

Re: Patriots Salary Cap Picture - 2/20/2014 Update - How the Pats can get under the c

Wow! Miguel, you definitely earned your LTBE incentive bonus for 2013-2014. I hope Bob Kraft or Ian Logue is paying you what you're worth. (Do what Big Papi does, go to the media, play the "respect" card early, and tell them you want to finish your career as a Patriot - they're huge suckers for that.)

Looking at the veterans, the three guys that total $4.7 million combined that the Patriots should keep if they are physically capable of playing are Gregory, Adrian Wilson and Tommy Kelly.

The Pats finished the year as the 2nd youngest team in the NFL and need professional veteran leadership. All three guys provide that.

If Kelly and Adrian Wilson are physically able to perform, their combined $2.7 million is 2% of the total cap and, even in part-time roles, fills a huge need on the DL and secondary.

I remain an unrepentant Steve Gregory fan. In my mind he's the glue to a vastly improved secondary. He brings the ability to read defenses and continuity to a young and volatile group of defensive backs. Both Talib and Dennard have all sorts of issues, the Rutgers kids are just entering their 2nd year, as is McCourty at his full-time safety position. Gregory and slot CB Kyle Arrington represent continuity at a very good price.

Besides, how could Belichick cut the guy who returned the butt fumble for a touchdown?

The Patriots do not have to do anything in the draft this year with the secondary if Adrian Wilson can give them a season as the big third safety.

Talib's deal is the key back there as far as the cap is concerned. I've advocated for the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag for Talib to give the Patriots a crack at two 1st round picks as compensation from any team that signs him to a long-term offer sheet.

One goal down. One more goal to go

Just curious if you have ever been offered any opportunities by any NFL team? Or by media (besides PatsFans.com)?

I should say that one of my goals this year was to start blogging on the Patriots salary cap. Mission accomplished. Another is to appear on the radio or on TV.
