Stunningly OT: US - Russia Hockey Game - Best Ever

+1 and this is a trivia question that fools people 99.9% of the time. Say to them "The U.S. won hockey gold in Lake Placid in 1980 - who won the silver?"

They will think you're trying to trick them because, of course, the game against the U.S.S.R. was not the final game. So they say "Finland!" thinking you've failed in your attempt to outsmart them.

But the correct answer is indeed the U.S.S.R. Because of the tournament format, the U.S.S.R. took silver and Finland, the team the U.S. beat in that final game, got nothing.

I learned something new today....thanks...had no idea

Lol, Touche! :D

Yeah they definitely don't show that much here either. If you live in Europe you definitely get to see more of these sports every winter.

We have Cross-country skiing, Biathlon and Alpine skiing on TV almost every weekend here in Sweden. Whenever it's an internatonal competition in one of them really.

My #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 top concerns is that none of the Bruins gets injured.
#6 is that the Russians don't win.
#7 is that Cindy Crosby doesn't score the gold medal-winning goal again.

It was very good, but not close to best. Top 10 % possibly.

Just finished a few minutes ago:

Severely undermanned Finland 3- Host Russia -1.

Now THAT game today beats the US win over Russia last week.

Putin plunks down $50 billion plus to have his beloved hockey team get embarrased and not make it out of the quarters.

Tuuka stoned 'em!

Beat me to the post. This makes 3 straight Olympiads in which the Russians have not won
a medal of any kind whatsoever, which is nice.
No Bruins injured so far, which is also nice. I hope now that I didn't just jinx them.

If I were those guys on the Russian team, I would beg the U.S. for political sanctuary. God knows the kind of "accidents" and "unfortunate situations" that they'll get into now that Putin is pissed. I mean, you know how easy it is to get strangled by piano wire as you're driving to the liquor store to pick up a bottle of Stoli.

Bet the Finnish are calling this game the best ever!!

Wow...now this was one of those games I'd call surprising.

Finland down 0-1, coming back to win 3-1 while being outshot 22-38 and all this in the Russians dome.

Maybe the pressure was just too much for Russia, on paper they are far superior at everything except at goaltending, which is pretty much a wash. Must have been a nice game to watch, what a pity I had to work!

But this is by far the worst of all for them since the 1980 catastrophe.

This took place in Mother Russia in front of Putin who had spent $50 billion on these games.

So they lost to the US and a Finnish team missing half their stars.

THAT in Russia is truly a national embarrassment.

My reaction? Couldn't have happened to a better despot.

The Russian coach was interviewed on NBC before the tournament and he said even if the Russians win gold in all Olympic events but fail to do so in hockey, these Olympics will be seen as a failure. And even if they fail to medal in any event but win the gold in hockey, it will be seen as a success.

It will be interesting to see what kind of backlash their hockey program, and star players are going to get in the next few days.

The Russian coach will be found to have committed suicide by stabbing himself in the back 25 times.

Pavelec lets in the worst goals...lets in horrible angle goals being in winnipeg as it is

I didn't see the game but read that Russian fans in the arena were livid at the end, whistling and jeering (same as booing here) their own team. The Finnish fans on hand even tried to console them.

Tuuka!!!

OK, the US took care of business its the US versus Canada (twice) tomorrow!

It would be a bad day in Cananda if they lost to both the US men and women on the same day.

US vs Canada in hockey is the rivalry for me. ..

Have plenty of cousins in Canada..... would love to have some bragging rights!

If anyone in is interested we will be watching the US/Canada game at the Banshee Bar a 934 Dorchester Ave on Friday at noon. We had about 50 today, 50 on Sunday and 150 for the Russia game.

And same goes for either the Bronze Medal (Sat 10am) or Gold Medal (Sun 7am).
