If you could bring back one former Patriot in their prime...

I am picking Law. Because CB in the 70's and 80's were allowed to do a whole lot more than the late 90's and now CB's.
I don't really think things changed much for CB's in the late 90's. I think things changed from the "point of emphasis" post-2004 and all the subsequent "targeting" rules placed in. I know Law was still playing after the rules "emphasis" but, in his prime, he was playing more under the old rules than the rules and enforcement we see today.

The choices for me are: Andre Tippett, Stanley Morgan, Mike Haynes, and Rodney Harrison.

And the answers are:

1. Mike Haynes
2. Stanley Morgan
3. Rodney Harrison
4. Andre Tippett

Tedy Bruschi. He was very clutch. Always around the ball.

To those who say, "Moss and it's not even close," I can understand the temptation.

However, as this past Super Bowl has shown us. Hell, as the Patriots' D back since Moss was here has shown us is....

The answer has to be on the DEFENSE, and it's not even close.:)

I am torn between Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett. Coin flip, I guess.

I could be talked into Raymond Clayborn, Junior Seau (we said prime, right?), Seymour, and Don Blackmon (but only if we are guaranteed he plays like he did in '85 AFCCG against Miami-go watch it!).

Ummmm, give me Haynes paired with Talib and Dennard.

I went with Tippett over Haynes because I figured his skillset carried over the best into the modern game. I just wasn't sure that Haynes would be the same kind of corner with the hands-off rules he'd be forced to adapt to.

But you are right, it'd be a coin flip in my opinion too.

That and I figured with Wilfork, Tippett and Jones rushing opposing quarterbacks.. ..we'd barely even NEED cornerbacks. ;)

Thanks p8 for that great trip down memory lane.

The 1976 team was the one that was robbed of a SB by Ben Drieth. The Steelers running game had lost both Rocky Blier and Franco Harris in the other AFC playoff game earlier that day, and Oakland ended up going on to win it all easily. We had to wait exactly 25 years for our revenge, but it was sweet.

Maybe you or someone else can help me with a question I have about the 86 playoff run to the SB. I seem to remember that the Pats kickoff team scored TDs in both the Raiders game and the Dolphins AFC title game, and maybe set up or scored another in one of those games. My question is, did I dream that? :p

Pretty sure Johnny Rembert recovered a fumble in the WC game against the Jets for a td, and Jim Bowman recovered a fumbled kickoff for a TD against the Raiders in the divisional game. I was at the AFC championship game against the Fish, I dont remember a special teams TD in that one...

Randy Moss

Tom Brady.

Robert Edwards

2011 Gronk and 2007 Moss on the same field would destroy any team you wouldn't need defense.

You are correct. The Patriots forced 11 turnovers in the first two playoff games.

In the Miami game, Eason threw 3 :eek:TD passes to Tony Collins, Derrick Ramsey, and Robert Weathers. Tatupu ran for the other TD.

You can tell I still watch that VCR tape at least once a year!

You tube has the entire game.

10-12 71 yds 3 TD's for Eason

I love watching Duper lose it after a incomplete pass that he thought should have been PI. Slamming his 1 bar helmet ad everything popping.

There were actually three fumbles recovered on Patriot kickoffs and returned for touchdowns.

  1. In regular season Game 15 at Miami, NE had scored to cut the Miami lead to 27-20 in the 4th quarter. Cedric Jones recovered/returned the Dolphin fumble on the ensuing kickoff to tie the game. Dolphins went on to win 30-27.

  2. In the AFC Wildcard Game at the Meadowlands, after a Tony Franklin FG, Johnny Rembert stripped the ball from jet KR Johnny Hector and returned it for a TD to open up a 23-7 lead. Patriots won 26-14. (Andre Tippet fans may remember that Tippett's brutal hit on jet QB Ken O'Brien late in the first half knocked the jet QB out of the game.)

  3. Finally, in the AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Oakland, a Tony Franklin FG tied the game late in the third quarter. On the kickoff, Jim Bowman recovered Sam Seale's fumble in the end zone. That TD was the margin of victory in the Patriots 27-20 win.

Wasn't it Mosi who caused that fumble ... IIRC, the kick went to the 5 or so, and Mosi was there as it was caught ... Special Teams beast!

There was a sack by Veris late in the game, and while the audio is poor, you can here Marino shout "Oh, *****!" as he sees he can't avoid it ... pure speed move by Veris.

Moss's third year with Minnesota. If we had him, we'd shatter every offensive record in the books.

Moss, Gronk, Edelman, Dobson/KT, Vereen is such a perfectly balanced offense it would be ridiculous.
