What is your take on Welker ' hit on Talib? Belichick thinks it was purposeful. I agree. Welker did not collide with Talib. He launched himself into Talib and left his feet. Welker had no intention of running a route. Also Manning's pass was in the air when the contact was made. The NFL should fine Welker a game check.

I know how it looked, David, but I disagree with the assessment. This type of collision happens every week in the NFL. If you look closely, this type of pick-route mentality happens weekly within the New England Patriot offense. It's a strategic way to beat man to man coverage. When these techniques are utilized closer to the line of scrimmage, they happen at a lower rate of speed. But when they happen down the field, 10-15 yards from the line of scrimmage, the rate of speed increases. Welker had a clear goal on that play -- to make Aqib Talib go over the top so he could free up Demaryius Thomas. Aqib Talib made a decision to attempt to fight to stay under that pick. So what you have there are 2 players, going at a high rate of speed because they were 10-plus yards from the line of scrimmage, simultaneously deciding to take the same route. That's where the collision occurred. Welker's intent was to pick Aqib Talib, but it wasn't to injure.

There's a reason that Belichick called this not only illegal, but one of the worst plays he's ever seen.

A CB trailing a WR is never expecting a straight body block. Only a CB trailing a ball carrier would expect that. This is why Talib was defenseless on the play.

In other words, if this is proper as Mike Pereira said, good luck to all the DBs out there who are about to get mangled.

Secondly, part of me thinks Belichick put it out there to draw attention to all the Broncos pick plays over the next couple of weeks.

Mike Periera (sp) said that it wasn't OPI because the ball arrived as Welker hits Talib, FWIW.

I figure that's why it wasn't called on the field, but, it's untrue: the hit occurs before the ball arrives.

At least Talib saw it coming, and I hope gave him a chance to better protect himself.

Bruschi is wrong on this.

Welker veered into Talib. Intent has little to do with it. When you're a DB trailing a WR, you're not looking to be body blocked, and he's defenseless there. Bruschi is saying that intent matters in this case, and that we see picks all the time. But we don't see picks at high speed blowing up CBs like this. Illegal picks DO happen all the time. It's the high speed illegal pick that makes this one unusual.

Same route? Bruschi is absolutely wrong. Welker is on the other side of the line when he veers left into Talib who is opposite that side.

Rip Welker all you want but it sounds ridiculous. He gave his blood sweat and tears Ti the Patriot s and they wouldn't pay him what he was owed. Then they turn around and sign Amendola. Bellicheck should bash himself and admit that he was arrogant and dead wrong. Welker is about to get a ring with the enemy now. And worst of all he is helping Manning to pad his legacy over Brady to do it.

Patriots fans need to stop excusing Bellicheck's awful decisions as a GM. Brady needs help bad.

I thought Welker should have been flagged, but they let people play yesterday other than the BS pass interference call against Hooman. That said, I didn't think it was a dirty play or Welker did anything that you don't see in a lot of games.

Belichick is wrong here and probably shouldn't have said what he said because it makes him look bad.

Re: Belichick blasts Welker

Is a "blast" different from a "rip" ?

Maybe the Gronk hit was legal, hence the silence.

Re: Belichick blasts Welker

Perhaps you missed the similarly titled thread on this waaaay before yours.

Oh, and BB doesn't give a crap what you think.

And I hope you really honestly consider what you just wrote there. That's disgusting. Wishing injury on any player is disgusting. Do you realize that breaking your leg is an injury that can effect you for life? You wish this on him because he called a slightly above average player "sorry?"

From right after the game on Twitter:
Richard Sherman ‏@RSherman_25 8h
Praying for @NBowman53 ... Hate to see such an amazing player go down like that... Speedy recovery

As for the Welker play, which is what this thread is actually about, that was obviously an intentional pick play, Welker obviously was trying to take him out, and it worked. It was probably the dirtiest play against the Pats since Bobby Wade and Rodney Harrison.

Screw the Donkeys, go Seahawks

I hope Richard Sherman takes Welker's head off (literally) and it bounces into the air before clocking John Fox right between the eyes, knocking him out cold. He looks like a goober anyway.

Re: Belichick blasts Welker

BB needs to eat his crow. He underappreciated Welker and didn't appreciate Brady enough to make sure that he still had his most valuable weapon. He let the best slot receiver of all time end up on a team that already had two elite wideouts and a HOF QB. Bellicheck is reaping what he sowed before the season. Now he has to live with that. He did a great job at coaching a team that lacked a lot of explosive talent, but he created that burden himself.Unfortunately, his players never had a good shot at a SB this year because of it. They over achieved, but they had no business being in the SB or even the AFC championship game.

I don't think there has been any love loss between Belichick and Welker for a while. Welker liked to shoot his mouth off and it hurt his little feelings when he was disciplined like everyone else on the team.

It only takes a couple minutes of listening to Welker speak to see that he's basically a moron. I don't think the number of concussions has helped his already limited brain capacity.

His untimely drops used to drive me insane, especially the one that cost us a Super Bowl. He's 32, he's lost a step, his brain is mush and he likes to shoot his mouth off. So I guess we all know why the Patriots didn't bend over backwards to keep him.

Personally I didn't care when he was allowed to leave because I never thought he was that irreplaceable. Julian Edelman proved that this year.

His actions since he left have just confirmed what I already thought, he's an ass.

The fact that Belichick who never says ANYTHING actually came out and said this speaks volumes on what he thinks of this turd. Good riddance.

Welker wasn't owed crap. Judging after one year, signing Amendola didn't work out, but letting Welker go was easily the right move. They had the better player in Edelman this season.

That giant helmet will make one hell of a projectile.

Re: Belichick blasts Welker

Yes, after all those Superbowls Welker helped win for us. How very dare Belichick!

Letting welker go was the right move. Brady without weapons is not a good thing but welker is not the answer going forward. But hey, what you and me think means jack **** and I don't think BB or Kraft gives a rats ass about it.

Yes, all teams run pick/rub plays. Please show me one where the Pats' wr threw his body into that of an oncoming defender. I'll wait.

Doesn't have to be pick plays. The patriots are one of the dirtiest teams in pro sports.

How about when wilfork threw a WWE style flying elbow at Losman's knee after the play?

You guys and belichick were strangely silent after that one.
