Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extension

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

So you guys that are stoked he's staying, safe to assume you think that the Jets under performed and had a more talented roster than their record would indicate?

They were a 6-10 team that was gifted 2 extra wins. They were 29th in opints scored and 19th in points allowed. They were 26th in points differential. There wins were against

Tampa (officials gifted them the game)
Buffalo (at home)
Falcons
Patriots (at home) (officials gifted them the game)
Saints (at home)
Raiders
Browns
Dolphins

The Saints game is a decent win and it seems even better at first blush, but the Saints were 1-5 on the road. So, looking at that, where's the significant overperformance?

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

Before this year, most people thought the Jets were a 3-4 win team

Oh well, most people thought is a very convincing argument.

Do you not realize that if people did think that it is an indictment of Ryan?
You suck so bad that you are percieved to have overachieved by struggling to average is not a ringing endorsement.

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

The Jets must really have gone "All in" on Ryan. Oh, wait...

Initially, the Jets wanted to offer only a one-year extension. Ryan wanted more than a year. This contract is the best of both worlds. It's a one-year extension that looks like a multiyear extension. Here's how: If Ryan wins in the postseason in 2014 and/or 2015, he cashes in for 2016. In essence, he's betting on himself. He can enjoy the benefits of having added security -- or at least the perception of added security -- and the team is protected in the short term. If Ryan doesn't win a playoff game before 2016, the Jets can opt out of the deal. But let's be honest: No contract is fireproof. If he goes 4-12 in 2014, he won't make it to 2015.

So they still have Mark Sanchez. They re-signed Jermaine Cunningham. And they extended Rex Ryan's contract. While the Patriots are going to three AFC Championship games in a row, the Jets are locked and loaded for three 8-8 seasons in four years. That 6-10 season that Rex turned in in 2012 screwed up everything.

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

Imo, Ryan will keep them from hitting rock bottom, Jets will be a halfway decent team with him. But, his ceiling isn't all that high. So they've essentially locked themselves up for mediocrity for the next couple of years.

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

rex ryan is hardly a bad coach.

If we're talking Head Coach, he's certainly hardly a good one! Man has terrible in-game skills....bad clock management, stupid challenges, lousy halftime adjustments, repeated dumb penalties. He knows zero about offense or building young players in general. His players are undisciplined, and with maybe the exception at the end of this year when he cried to his players that his job was on the line, they usually quit on him. And I know I'm in the minority when I say I don't think he's that good of a DEFENSIVE coach as, like his father before him, he was handed elite players in Baltimore and his first 2 years on the Jests. His D has gotten progressively worse under his oversight since he took over the job on the Jests.

This is GREAT news. :rocker:

I'd like to extend my thanks to the Jets for continuing to thoroughly entertain me with their excellent decision making and wonderful fan base.

That's what any reasonable Pats fan should want. Play just well enough to not get a top pick in the draft and suck just enough to not make the playoffs. It's a win-win. :D

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

Gotta read the small print.

As the NY tabloids are reporting this morning, this is more like the Sanchez "extension" than a real vote of confidence. The only major change to Ryan's contract is that the Jets now guarantee 2015 (vs. just 2014). After that, it's not all guaranteed (details have not been released...or leaked...yet). In my view, this was exactly the right outcome...very unusual for the Jets organization, which is prone to get just about everything completely wrong.

I live in NYC and, as an avid consumer of sports media, am forced to follow the Jets more closely than I would like.

I'm not going to get into the "overachieved/whatever" debate, but Rex has cleaned up his act in the last year or so. The locker room no longer resembles a circus and he's stopped his annual April ritual of guaranteeing an SB win. I think it's reasonable to say that he got as much out of the team he had this year as could have been expected.

It's also reasonable to say that the team has regressed in the last three seasons. However, Sanchez was clearly not a Franchise QB and it's doubtful that Geno Smith is either; Smith belongs in the NFL...it's just not clear whether he's going to be able to achieve at a high level. Rex might have gone over the top for Sanchez, but he's learned from that mistake and has been very cautious about his support for Smith.

So, I think it's the right outcome to give Ryan one more season to see what he can do after filling in some of the holes and with a limited QB who now has a year of experience.

I also think that the real problem here is the ownership. The team is going to be dysfunctional as long as Woody "Is the ball stuffed with feathers?" Johnson is the owner...which, personally, I hope is for a long time.

I know this will be unpopular, but I actually like what we can see of Ryan and think he deserves a chance with a decent franchise and ownership. IMO, the best thing that could have happened to him would have been for the Jets to fire him.

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

misguided or not, if the jets get their offense straightened out they could be a scary team. they are built to beat the patriots, that alone should scare some of us.

Nope. They're building to beat the mediocre D/Gronk/Ahern Patriots. They're not at all built for the type of squad we have now.

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

So happy they're giving him at least another year. As long as we have Ryan, we'll have this:

Kellen Winslow and Boston Market

Re: Schefter gives us the best news we've heard all day: Jets sign Rex Ryan to extens

I doubt the Jets will be able to find any coaches much better than Ryan.

That's an excellent point. I'll bet they put out feelers and had no leads on a promising replacement. I'm also guessing that his contract won't be much for them to swallow if they do decide to cut ties in a year or two.

Nobody else they asked was willing to step up and toe the company line for them, so they had to suck up their pride and let Rex stick his foot back in the door while they wait for the other shoe to drop.
