Revisiting the 2013 Draft Day Trade: Cordarelle Patterson for four picks

Now we can trade McCourty, Collins, Boyce, Ryan, and Blount for Dez Bryant!

...and the reported reason why was that he was struggling to learn the playbook. He's clearly a talented player, but doesn't fit the mold of a Patriots first rounder at all.

Given the way the board stacked up and the fact that the Pats had an uncharacteristic dearth of picks, the trade was a no-brainer. It transformed their whole draft.

Not disagreeing at all. I do think he may end up being very Moss-like when he finally figures it all out though.

There is no special teams rookie of the year and he is certainly not the offensive rookie of the year.

He looks to be a darn good player, but fans overrate WRs more than any other position. It's just because they always look so fast, athletic and irreplaceable, when in fact WR is one of the easier positions to play and therefore has the most depth. It also looks like they are contributing more than they actually are. For example, an average QB throws for about 250 yards per game. Obviously someone needs to catch the ball on the other end. Simply because a guy can occasionally get 100 yards doesn't mean that much any more.

Not that it wouldn't be nice to have a real #1 receiver- it's just that, as I've said a number of times on this board, someone like Dez Bryant is probably the 20th best WR in the league, or at best, the 7th or 8th. Can anyone name the 7th or 8th best center in the NFL? Guard? Cornerback? Nose tackle? Just because you see these guys on NFL Tonight more than the others doesn't mean they had that big an impact on the team.

Let's not trash Patterson to prove this is a good trade for the Pats. Fact is it has worked out very well for the Pats and Patterson did well for the Vikes. We'll never know whether Patterson would have worked out here or if he would have picked up the system. The Pats valued depth over 1 single pick which they certainly achieved. Time will tell whether Patterson becomes a top tier receiver in this league and even if he does, nobody will say the Pats should not have made this trade based on how they utilized all the players they ended up getting from it this year.

I'll go one step further: the trade was absolutely the right decision regardless of who the Pats ended up picking.

Maybe it's splitting hairs, but they had to pull the trigger on that deal without knowing who would be available rounds later. Given the available talent at 29, the makeup of the Patriots roster, and their lack of mid-round picks, coming up with a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th for #29 was great, great work.

Revisting this again. It's a clear slam dunk for the Pats. Patterson has 1 catch this year, 385 yards and 1 TD since his "great" rookie season. Jamie Collins on the other hand is going to be All Pro.

I actually think Ryan could turn out to be a productive player in this league. He needs to be converted to a safety, but the Pats are stacked at that position already so he's a bit stuck. Obviously at this point Collins for Patterson would be a straight up no brainer, heck if you did the trade today, they'd have to package a 2nd rounder as well.

But Blount, Ryan and Collins alltogether is a net fleecing!

Trades like this are the only thing giving me slight solace re the stolen first rounder next April...

Patterson has been almost completely removed from the Vikings offense. This is after a decent bit of training camp hype. He can't compete with Jarius Wright and Charles Johnson for targets, and with AD back, breaking out will be that much harder. I wouldn't be surprised if he's wearing different colors next season. He's just another Koren Robinson. Tons of physical talent wasted.

We could have traded this pick down for the Collins pick alone and it would have been completely worth it. Great trade.

I thought bill said after the draft thatvhad they not traded, they would have still picked collins. It would have still been a good pick. He was that high on their board. Another instance of bill being smarter than everyone else.

I love these retrospects, because two years later everything looks so clear and indisputable. The unsubstantiated hype has blown away in the breeze, all the trolls have crawled off into their caves, and the players' performances speak for themselves.

Contrast with that crazy article calling out the 2015 draft picks that already look disappointing after 3 weeks of gameplay (which included Malcom Brown, funnily enough). Well, after 3 weeks in their rookie year, Patterson looked like a perennial pro-bowler, and Collins looked like a wasted pick.

Absolutely! The funny thing to remember is that the positivity of fan reaction to the picks at the time was -pretty much opposite to how they turned out. Knee-jerk consensus was:

Buchanan -- steal!
Boyce -- promising pick at a clear need position
Ryan -- ok, but we're getting a little silly with this Rutgers thing
Collins -- what? who? with Hightower, Jones and Mayo on the roster?? what about WR???
:D

And now Buchanon: gone

Boyce: gone gone, NFL career is over guy can't play.

Ryan: sucks, liability to start outside.

Collins: stud cornerstone player that may be a once in a generational player in the upcoming years.

Yep, pretty much precisely the opposite of popular reaction. Though I think "sucks" is too harsh for Ryan -- as you say, he's no starting outside CB but decent in the slot and a useful role player. That's very fair value for a mid-round draft pick. For perspective, none of the CBs selected after Ryan (Kayvon Webster, Shawn Williams, Will Davis, B.W. Webb, Steve Williams) are starters either.

It was actually the 7th that went to Tampa for Blount (with Demps) not Buchanan. Which is a bit better, even if he left and came back.

Even without the trade, Collins at 29 is a slam dunk pick looking back. So anything else is a bonus.

Infact, looking back, Collins in the top 10 would have been a good pick in that draft. Lacy, Bell, Allen, Richardson, Reid, Long, Alonso, Mathieu, Frederick are the best other players/pro bowlers in that draft. Where does Collins rank there?
