re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

ditka can barley put together a sentenczzz on airz

Yeah, he may have taken a few too many helmet to helmet hits, that's for sure. But, again IIRC, he's been pretty accurate when picking our games this season. Bruschi's take, of course, is always appreciated.

He was fine a few years ago..but seems to have really hit a wall

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

I've noticed that experts are bad.

Either they have horrible football instincts, which would be amazing considering the reasons many of them are considered `experts,` or its all one giant charade to drive ratings, broaden the market, etc etc.

Its beyond disputable that the experts are always just hypnotized by offensive production against bottom feeders. They over value it and skews their predictions every single season.

I think this is a recent change, honestly, that really became evident the 2011 season. The Packers had a legitimately good offense, and it was worthy of its praise (much more so than the 2013 Broncos), but it was really obvious that team was not built for the play offs and was going to get punched in the mouth.

I like Rodgers a lot, admittedly, but the media was literally proclaiming him to be the GOAT that season, which is just ridiculous for a guy with one ring who hasn't played nearly long enough yet to demonstrate long term GOAT consistency.

More over, that was the year the lock out noticeably effected defenses. Rodgers had the best "QBR" of all time for a season, two other quarterbacks had over 5,000 yards, it was just ridiculous.

Of course, the "experts" don't realize any of this, and call the Packers the definite Superbowl champions, Rodgers the GOAT, everything about them is just amazing, BOOM, one-and-done in the play offs.

Experts. Minds. Blown.

Meanwhile, the Patriots were really getting disrespected by everyone after losing two in a row in week 8 even though it was obvious to anyone watching the games that the defense over all, despite a few individuals (Sergio Brown anyone?) was improving steadily every week to compliment an amazing Brady season, Brady lead offense, and emerging Superstars in Gronk and Hernandez.

What happened? They went to the Superbowl.

Last year it was the same, only with Denver. According to the media narrative, Denver was the greatest thing ever and my eyes were supposed to well up in tears because Peyton had a neck surgery (which also meant he was entitled to MVP despite inferior stats to Brady and Rodgers).

Definite 2012 Superbowl champions. The fact that they lost to EVERY winning team they played was irrelevant or lost in the compiling of information most of us use in the forming of educated opinions.

Boom. One and done.

It's either really bad analysis or maybe it's just that constantly talking about how great the Patriots are after 13 years isn't great for expanding national interest, so different hype teams are necessary every year to generate enthusiasm across all different regions of the country.

Ditka isn't always making sense. Maybe his bell's been rung too many times or maybe he's thrown down to many pints over the years. Yet one thing I like about Ditka, he's a straight shooter. What he says is what he thinks. It's isn't axe grinding or he's butt hurt over something or this is what the audience wants to hear. So whether right or wrong we could use more guys like him on FSPN IMHO.......

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

I believe all of them picked the Ravens when they played the Pats. How did that work out for them?

Ditka picked the Pats, which is why this is disappointing

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

I honestly have more faith when these 'experts' all pick against the Pats

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

You got it. One of the best movies ever...Goodfellas is the ****

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

Ditka and Jaws rarely pick against the Pats even when everybody else is picking against us. I'm a little concerned now.

Not ESPN but couple of SI picks

Previewing NFL divisional round: Colts-Patriots, 49ers-Panthers, more | Audibles - SI.com

No. 4 Indianapolis at No. 2 New England — Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET (CBS): The unwillingness to lose is a tough intangible to measure. And it might be the Colts’ most dangerous quality.

They put it on full display last weekend in storming back from 28 down to stun the Kansas City Chiefs, thus setting up this matchup against New England. Opening in such a hole again this week likely would mark the end of the line as requiring another massive rally, this time in Foxboro, might be too much to ask.

But the Colts are dangerous enough, especially on offense, to hang with New England. The conversation with both teams often starts at quarterback, and Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck has moved quickly onto the verge of joining players like the Patriots’ Tom Brady among the elite at his position. (Some might even argue that Luck is there already, despite his short time in the league.) Luck shook off three interceptions last week to bounce back with four TD passes and 443 yards through the air.

His play has been aided in recent weeks by the continued development of the weapons around him, despite the loss of Reggie Wayne for the season. T.Y. Hilton (13 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns versus Kansas City) is now a viable No. 1 threat, while Da’Rick Rogers has come out of nowhere to provide a home-run option. Meanwhile, Donald Brown has grabbed the top RB job by the throat, wrestling it away from Trent Richardson.

“They’re very much a gameplan offense. What you see them doing in one game is not necessarily what you see them doing in another,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “Against Kansas City it was almost all three receivers and a tight end.

“Maybe they’ll look at us differently, maybe they won’t. … It’s hard to predict exactly what they’re going to do.”

What the Colts have not always done is protect Luck. He was sacked 32 times in the regular season — a number that easily could have been higher, if not for his escapability. New England can be dangerous off the edge, thanks to Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones.

That’s what the Indianapolis defense often lives and dies by, too. Robert Mathis led the league in sacks this season, and his forced fumble of Alex Smith last week helped turn the tide in Indianapolis’ favor. The Colts need him and his fellow linemates to at least pressure Brady because their secondary may be too wounded to corral the Patriots’ passing attack.

Smith lit up Indianapolis early last week, something Brady surely took notice of. Even with Rob Gronkowski on the shelf and no true No. 1 receiver, Brady had a stellar season. A multi-prong run game, led by Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, will test the Colts as well. – Chris Burke

The Pick:

CB: Patriots 31, Colts 20
DF: Colts 23, Patriots 21

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

Hahaha oh God do I hate Merril Hoge. Like hate more than anything.

His love of Manning and jealousy of the Pats is so sad.

The only thing that comes out of Idaho are steers, queers and potatoes. So he's one of those 3.

Giving him a little slack, wasn't he pronounced dead or close, from a concussion? I know he beat cancer.

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

I'll never forget how every single ESPN "expert" picked the Steelers to beat the Super Bowl champion Patriots opening week in 2002 at the brand new Gillette Stadium..... I've never seen a SB champion disrespected like that.

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

Ray lewis is the best analyst on espn nfl countdown. Ray talks about the game with the insight madden used to before he got old.

re: ESPN "Expert" picks for Patriots vs Colts

Wilbon's pick is the only one I care about. It's scary how accurate he's been on the Pats over the years and he's picking the Pats this week.

Until Gronk went down, he had us winning the Super bowl or at least going to it; don't requite remember which one.

That's precisely what he wants you to think. That's the image and brand he fosters, but i think age has caught up with him and the image/brand is pretty damn tarnished. (it's hard for anyone to stand up to the corporate world of sports)

BTW, he almost always picks the Pats, and as one poster notes, at some other venue, has no doubt picked them for tonite's game.
