QBs: Colin K, Wilson, Brees, Luck, Manning, Brady, Newton, Rivers.
(((Talk about the old guard meets the new guard. The NFL really could not have planned it much better)))
So what qualifiers are needed to rank these QBs? I'm throwing out what I consider to be important. Admittedly it is an overly simplistic list/rating system on a discussion that probably requires in depth statistical analysis. Take it for what it's worth (in no particular order):
Pure passing (decision making and delivery): Hard to say who is#1. IMHO Newton is last.
Experience in the Biggest of NFL Games: Brady is #1. Newton is last.
Comeback ability: Hard to rank a #1 on this. Probably Brady(he'll be near the top for sure). Newton is last.
Ability to make something happen (Scrambling/avoidance and yards/scores by rushing): Colin K is first with Newton a close second. IMHO Manning is the worst with Brady next to last (he is a QB sneak threat)
Receiving group: Manning is first. Brady is last (if not for Luck's group Brady would be last by a country mile).
Leadership-Field generalship: Another tough category to rank (this is one of the most critical categories IMHO). I'd rank Newton as last based on a widely respected veteran on his own team openly questioning his leadership. A fair argument can be made for Brady as #1 (certainly no where near the bottom) but most of these guys score well in this category.
((***I don't rank ability to throw the ball deep because I just don't see that connected to success***))
#1 QB: The rating scale (again I know it's overly simplistic) makes an argument for Colin K. It's close and his pure passer rank is not at the top but he ranks well in every category (with the caveat being his track record is short).
Worst QB: Newton is last and I don't think there's a lot of room to argue otherwise. Nothing personal against Cam but he ranks on the low side, comparatively, in everything but a great ability in 'making something happen'.
