Josh McDaniels withdraws consideration for Browns HC

Good decision on McDaniels' behalf and ensures short term consistency for the Patriots. I like this all-around.

Lombardi loves BB and was deadset on Josh. I'm not sure if he's going to get an opportunity like this or one at all.

So what? He needs to help New England win another Super Bowl.

excellent news!

the best is yet to come from Josh's return.

He must have found out Peyton Hillis was going to be in CLE in 2014.

I called this the thread about his interview. Not celebrating, mind you, but I always thought that Josh would be better served here in New England.

He has a great job, a good paycheck, excellent working conditions and a young family who need a little consistency in their lives.

There will likely be other opportunities, better opportunities down the pike. He's plenty young and I'm certain he'll get another chance at a Head Coaching job. But for now, he's in a very good place and doing something he's pretty doggone good at. :rocker:
This is a good situation but don't kid yourself: There isn't an assistant or coordinator in the league that wouldn't want to be the HC somewhere. As for there being plenty of opportunities down the road, those are some pretty famous last words.

Browns fans tired of being sick and tired - Cleveland Browns Blog - ESPN

Josh McDaniels made a great decision. It's Amateur Hour in Cleveland, and the aboe story is just the tip of the iceberg. After the Belichick, Mangina and Crennell story line, the last thing the fans and media want is another Patriots wunderkind.

Here's something I haven't heard discussed: I'm wondering if McDaniels really wanted the Cleveland job but learned something during the interview he didn't like. Such as, limited say in personnel decisions, not enough money, etc. We might never know, but the fact he even did the interview suggests being open to taking the job.

But... NOW who will trade us three first round picks for Mallett??

The Oakland Raiders are still in the league right.....? ;)

Someone here said that him turning it down to stay should pump up the team... which might be a stretch... but let's say it's true... maybe BB told him to do this to pump up the team.

I'll go with your first idea of it being a stretch. ;)

Wow, I think Josh is overestimating his reputation. Broncos and Rams were a disappointment and most people believe that BB and Brady are the reason for the offensive success (which is true).

Lombardi loves BB and was deadset on Josh. I'm not sure if he's going to get an opportunity like this or one at all.

even a great coach with average players will still be a average team, the browns have no QB and they play in a stacked division am sure if the Texans or lions asked him to be the HC he would have taken the job. so he will ride Tom Brady for one more year and become the top head coaching candidate next year...BOTTOM LINE this is good news for the pats and McDaniels

That's what I was thinking. In addition to #4 overall, early 2nd and 3rd picks they own Indy's 1st and 4th and the Steelers 3rd. That's potentially a lot of high end young blood to inject into a rebuilding franchise. Lombardi must have told him he's buying the groceries.

Generally speaking, when a coaching position opens up, it's because the prior regime did a lousy job and the whole situation is a cluster-you-know-what. Sure it's amateur hour in Cleveland. Just like in Tennessee, Washington, Tampa Bay, Minnesota and Houston. Just like it was amateur hour in New England circa 2000.

The whole point of a good coach is to change all that.

even a great coach with average players will still be a average team,
I disagree. A great coach with average players will be an above average team. Maybe not necessarily Super Bowl Champions, but don't tell me that Bill Belichick taking over an average 8-8 team wouldn't have made them win 10 or 11.

BB did take over a fledgling 8-8 team... and in 2 years won a SB.

Well, I don't consider having the greatest QB in the history of football, even in his first year as a starter, as having "average players". But let's just say that I feel if he was in, say, Miami this year they would have done better than 8-8.

Yup. We'll find out more when they hire someone and specify his responsibilities.

The Pats organization is still on a high from the Hulk Hogan endorsement.

You dont get much better than that.

Rumor has it that McDaniels withdrew his name from the hat because he was no longer considered the leading candidate.

NEM was spotted in Cleveland on Tuesday. The timing adds up. Just saying.
