Josh McDaniels withdraws consideration for Browns HC

I think that is the real problem there. Who would want to take a HC coaching job with a massive hole at the most important position(QB) when the ownership seems to like firing HCs who don't immediately perform.

For the majority new coaches, they're not going to be gift-wrapped a great situation, they're taking over bad teams. Josh's rep was hit bad after the Broncos/Rams fiasco. I'm not sure that he's going to have a better opportunity then this with a GM that loves him, a top 5 pick where he can groom a QB with Hoyer there as well and weapons like Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron. He's a good OC, but the knock against him will be what can he do without BB and Brady. Charlie Weis, Romeo, etc... failing hasn't helped him either. Maybe if O'Brien does well that will help.

Yipee so we have him for one more year...smart move on his part. Cleveland though they have some Talent are the Fourth best Team in that Division. I am surprised Detriot didn't come after Josh.

Well except their past 3 HC have lasted 2, 2, and 1 year. That doesn't exactly seem like the kind of situation where I would want to groom a new QB or depend on a gimpy former-UDFA.

If I had faith that I would be given a few years to build the team Cleveland would seem to be a good spot. But hard to have faith with that kind of HCing turnover.

Lombardi was the only other exec in the league who was going to go to bat for him as a HC besides Belichick. What other interviews was he getting? He has to be waiting it out.

The other argument is that they last 2-2-1 so they're going to give him a chance. Browns have a ton of picks, Ravens/Steelers have massive cap issues and the Bengals' head coach is Marvin Lewis. Because of the Broncos/Rams, he might not have as good as an opportunity

But if he truly doesn't think he's going to get a legitimate chance to turn around a franchise that has had zero success since it's return to Cleveland, he has to consider that his next head coaching gig is likely to be his last if he fails. And if that happened, he can't rely on the Patriots having an opening at OC for a third time to build his reputation back up. I think he's smart to wait it out, Cleveland is a wasteland right now.

He will probably get job offers elsewhere in the future but this is fantastic news for the organization. McDaniels also made a smart decision as there is a lot of work to do there with an impatient and ADD-afflicted ownership.

But... NOW who will trade us three first round picks for Mallett??

Is it really asking too much of Josh to accept the Browns HC'ing job?

..and

1) Give us the Brown's 1st round pick for Mallet
2) Trade us Joe Haden, Josh Gordon and Phil Taylor for Reggie Dunn and Austin Collie
3) Resign as the Browns head coach (maybe on a napkin)
4) Return to the Patriots as the OC?

Is that really so much to ask?

Just a thought: OC/DC contracts can stipulate that in the case of a vacancy, the OC/DC gets an automatic promotion. [Such stipulations, BTW, allow a team to bypass the Rooney Rule.]

And another: Michael Lombardi loves him, but we have no idea re: the ownership.

McDaniels update:

Browns fail again:

I thought McDaniels/Manziel in Cleveland had a pretty good chance. Looks like Josh is choosing to wait on his next opportunity.

I think Josh made a great decision and I commend him for making what must have been a hard decision, I do not think he would have received a 3rd coaching opportunity if he did not succeed in Cleveland, given the rate at which Cleveland turns over their coaches it was not worth the risk. If Josh McDaniels wants to be part of something special he should stick with Bill for another 5-10 years and then take over this organization.

Given that, Clevelands recent history of turnover, and his past history with Denver(being fired after less than 2year) you have to wonder if he went to the interview wanting some assurances he would be given a few years to turn things around.

Perhaps he found those assurances lacking. Remember he obviously had some interest in the job since he interviewed.

I hope this pumps the team up for a postseason run. McD turning down a HC position, to stay loyal to the team and go win it all. Would really fire me up and inspire me to go win.

This is really good news, glad we have him for at least 1 more year. I'm pretty surprised he turned the job down.

Another year with Dobson, Boyce, and Thompkins getting more experience in this offense with McDaniels should only make the offense better next year.

There are a lot of things that would make the Cleveland job not a good fit for Josh. I just heard this last night. After paying off Holmgren and all the coaches he hired, and Chudzinski and all the coaches he hired, the New owner of Browns has now invested $50MM over the last year plus, and right now has NO coaches.

I know there are only 32 HC'ing jobs in the NFL, but the Cleveland job has to be viewed as a huge risk, despite the talent they already have and the draft picks and cap room they have to add to it. Its the kind of a job only a first time HC would or should take. McDaniels as one strike against him in a game where you only get 2 strikes at best.

I think a previous poster said in best. Within 5 years when Josh is in his mid-forties, BB will move on and Josh will be in a perfect position to succeed him, and in the meanwhile his family can remain in a stable environment throughout their formative years.

In addition, Josh will have had five more years to sharpen his coaching knowledge and skills under the watchful eye of The Master. McDaniels is a very good coach right now - he'll be even better with more experience.

The Cleveland Browns did not have to give up a second round draft pick for Brian Hoyer.

Wow, I think Josh is overestimating his reputation. Broncos and Rams were a disappointment and most people believe that BB and Brady are the reason for the offensive success (which is true).

Lombardi loves BB and was deadset on Josh. I'm not sure if he's going to get an opportunity like this or one at all.

He is the Pats next head coach. :coffee:

Josh will be getting a call from John Elway after the Broncos go 1 and done again and fire John Fox. He'll reunite with Welker and get a team that already has a solid QB. ;)

The moment they pulled the trigger on firing Chud any HC candidate worth an interview has to become concerned about their ownership.

They'll end up going with a retread or an unknown and in 12-18 months they'll be looking for another HC.

Love this, just because the uncertainty is out now during the playoffs!
