Lovie Smith in as Tampa Bay Bucs HC; Revis may be out

I hate to say it but unless the Patriots win a SB this year, there are probably 5 other teams someone would look to before the Patriots if their goal was to get a ring. 2004 was a long time ago. The Patriots are seen as a contender but Denver, 49s, Seattle, Saints and possible others are seen as the new favorites every year over the Patriots. Patriots are a solid team that will make it into the playoffs every year but long ago bare the days when they were seen as a ticket to a ring.

So which team is a ticket in to play in the SB every year?

Although he is a great athlete-DB; I Dont like the idea several ways (most of which already mentioned):

-- huge cap hit on pats, that they cant afford next year w/o sacrificing other FAs.
-- (IMO) a me first player
-- Doubt that Bucs cut him just because of L Smith taking over.

and one not mentioned: I am not aware of his exact salary-bonus structure w/ TB; but I have to guess that anyone who signed a mega-M$ deal for 4+ (?) years; CANNOT REALISTICALLY be cut or traded in YEAR 2 of that deal. My assumption is this is just a homer wish by the OP (although I think due to me-first issue is mis-guided homerism)

Re: Report: Bucs are hiring Lovie Smith as their HC

Good to know that I'm not the only one that doesn't see what's so special about Lovie Smith.

Sounds like some folks journeyed out to Colorado to get some of that legal stuff, no way will this team pick up even a discounted Revis at 10 million.... he is good, but not good enough to upset the economic scales that this team is noted for.

I see this team as not making a huge free agent splash, they will instead continue to build through the draft and restructure some contracts to allow some smaller additions to be made and to sign some of their own...

This is probably more bye week mind wandering but this article piqued my interest.

Lovie Smith’s hiring could end Revis experiment - PFT

So the Buccaneers have all but made the hiring of Lovie Smith official. He is a defensive minded coach that already predominately uses a Cover 2 going to the place that revolutionized it. Derelle Revis is a much better man corner who in our current scheme would fit perfectly. With Revis having a down year and new coaching staff having cap and draft incentive to part with him, it makes a lot of sense. It reminds me a lot of the situation with Nnamdi Asomugha in Philly, after one down year people didnt bat an eye at the thought of cutting him.

Obviously he would still come at a high price and if the Bucs dont outright cut him we might have to trade for him. It would also raise questions about another ex-Buc corner in his last year with us. Obviously most would prefer to keep Talib a Patriot but if not I would be very open to making a move for Revis this offseason. Best case scenario after being another year removed from injury he looks more like his old self, we pair him with Talib for the best CB duo in the league, and he picks off whoever starts for his old team twice a year.

Sounds good to me. Almost too good to be true so it probably wont happen. But one can hope! :D

Mevis would have to have a serious attitude adjustment and take less to play here. I don't see that happening.

It's a great dream though.

The Jets board would explode if it did happen.

Revis can't come here.
After years of Patsfans whining about how he grabs and holds on every play yet gets away with it, the cognitive dissonance would implode the forum.

Pats should offer Talib a decent contract and utilize their young cheap corners. That's the most $ they should spend on one position, CB.

Patriots jersey on - physical player with elite coverage skills. Other team jersey on - cheater who holds all the time. The board will adjust accordingly.:)

And I agree as to Talib. I have no interest in Revis, and the Nnamdi Asomugha situation (he is 32, Revis is 28) with the Eagles should be enough to deter crazy deals for a CB. Take what is known rather than unknown, and don't break the bank to add a new piece that may not better the situation significantly.

Those teams have combined to appear in two super bowl's in the last five years and the Pats have been to two on their own. Just saying

Anyone who can bring a team with rex grossman quarterbacking to the super bowl is a pretty good coach. I'd think they'd want to play to the strengths of the team and go man-to-man using Revis instead of getting rid of him and trying to find zone corners. Bucs have a ton of caproom if I remember correctly. May as well keep Revis.

Actually, Revis' deal in Tampa had no signing bonus and no guaranteed money. It's a straight 16M per year, cash = cap deal. (check overthecap.com for details on Revis' contract and pretty much all others in the NFL).

So how could the pats fit his 16M cap in here? Even at 10M they couldn't fit it. Sign Revis or Talib, Edelmen, and Fletcher.

That's crazy stupid on Revis' part if true. Does he have a 'Please Cut Me for Cap Room' shirt?

Anyway the 16M is moot anyway, once he's cut, he's cut. It's not like anyone is picking this guy up off of waivers so that they can pay him 16M a year.

Anyway, if (big if obviously) the ****-show in TBAY finally showed him that maybe winning is important, I would certainly be interested in the Pats acquiring him.

And yes, I have complained about him being allowed to grab and hold. To me there is no cognitive dissonance about it.

I complain that Chandler Jones gets held 10 times per game but if there was one of those LT that held him available and was good enough to sign, well come hold DE's for us.

the jets are just going to take the money earmarked for Sanchez, and move it over to Revis. how much did they pay sanchez last year? 14 million? im sure they can find 2 million worth of players to make room for the chosen one.

One more interesting side note to this...

the Jets/Bucs trade that sent Revis to the Bucs still has one more conditional draft pick left on it. The Bucs have to send the Jets a 4th round pick this year, it escalates to a 3rd round pick IF Revis is on the Bucs roster on the 3rd day of the 2014 league year (@ March 15, 2014)...

the plot thickens.....

I don't think 6 mil a year gets Talib signed, hope I'm wrong. Value wise:

Talib @ 6 > Revis @ 10

But

Talib @ 8 < Revis @ 10.

Might at well see how much Revis is looking for if Talib is looking for more than 6. I know the CB market was poor last year but I expect it to bounce back this year. Lot of dumb teams out there.

The worry with Talib is, as Deus Irae mentioned, that he has a chronic hip injury. Revis is healthy, and it's been my impression that he actually had a very good year this year (though a down year by Revis standards is, what, not being the defensive candidate for MVP?)

I wouldn't be surprised if Dennard, Ryan, and Arrington are the starters next year though.

I still think we re sign talib. Maybe he has hip surgery on his problem hip. Idk, but I would like to have talib.

They'll either redo his deal or they'll cut him 3rd rd pick be dammed. $16m is $16m

Certainly would like them too. Now that hes coming off a ProBowl year the question is how much will it take? He'll be 28 years old..right in his prime.

I don't think it is as high as it was after the first 6 games.
