Belichick Working On Greatest Coaching Masterpiece

Thanks! Good read. Very much agree with your premise. One detail you might consider editing is having no mention of Edelman, who has emerged as the most consistent and productive of Brady's receivers. :rocker:

Well then, lets hope this season culminates with a Mona Lisa and not just Dogs Playing Poker. :)

No mention of Edelman?

As my signature claimed prior to the season beginning, this may actually end up being his greatest coaching season ever.

First me have to see what happens in the next couple of games, of course.

One thing to remember is that there aren't likely to be many (if any) other teams in the NFL who could have posted an 11 or 12 win season under these incredibly changing circumstances.

A deep playoff run (which I consider to be an AFCCG appearance) would put 2013 in the mix for his greatest coaching season ever, as we normally compare the non-playoff season of 2008 too, but should they go to the SB there's no doubt at all in my mind, even if they'd lose the big game again.

Agreed, the absence of Edelman in the article is a strange. Edelman's is one of the biggest stories on the offense. 90+ catches out of Edelman and possibly 1,000 yards is damn impressive. The last people in any near past to have done that w/the Pats have been Moss and Welker (maybe Gronk?). I never took issue w/Brady's reaction in the early weeks. He wants the best out of his teammates and himself. Yeah he was pissed when his receivers frequently dropped passes but outside of that he never said a negative thing about the situation or his team mates.

I think with a bye this team has every possibility of winning a SB. Anything can happen.

To continue this run of excellence while completely rebuilding this team is unparalleled in the NFL.... while some coaches/GM do it for 4-5 years.. this is 14 years now, we are spoiled.

It really has been amazing, last year I went to training camp with a poster that was a play on the movie "The Avengers". Gronk's head was on the Hulk, Hernandez on Thor, Welker/Captain America, and Lloyd/Iron Man.

The point is that Brady went from a 'super hero' supporting cast to.......

Three Rookies (Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce), a constantly injured slot man (Amendola), a jag (Edelman), and absolutely no TE receiving threat.

The fact that we are 11-4 is just crazy to me.

There were times this year when I had the realization that without Brady/Belichick, our team wasn't much better than the Jaguars.

Take the Cincy game for instance.......I'm sure I'm missing some, but those definitely not on the field were Wilfork, Gronk, Ridley, and Vereen. Amendola was still very hampered by his injury and only a shell of himself.

Yet on the road against an eventual division champ we played tough and still were even in that ballgame. That was impressive to me even in the loss.

To some degree I feel like Belichick is a victim of his own success and that people don't truly appreciate what he has done. THey just expect him to win.

In 2003, most IR-d players on a Super BOwl winning team.
In 2006, make it to the AFC Championship with Reche Caldwell, Troy Brown, and Jabar Gaffney as your prime receivers (Gabriel cut).
In 2008, no Brady no A.Thomas no L.Maroney and still go 11-5.

People just come to expect greatness and don't realize that they could very easily use the Falcons excuse of 'injuries' and win 5 games, but the big difference is ...the Patriots don't need excuses, they just keep winning.

Belichick is definitely a rare coach.

This serves once again as a call to Patriot Nation to enjoy the Belichick Era for as long as it exists....

Many undererstimate or misunderstand what a Great Coach is and does. Vince Lombardi was a great Coaching Coach. But he inherited a decade of First Round draft picks and merely organized them to produce until they all got old.

He then exited Stage Left and let Phil Bengston begin the burden of rebuilding. Ditto for the Steelers Coach, Joe Gibbs. Shula was a great cosching Coach but he couldn't rebuild the Phish into a SB club after the players George Wilson and the unbalanced Draft gave Miami, got old.

Walsh built the 49ers and retired to be a GM,when their player acquisition was much easier since FA had arrived, but the CAP had not. He is a great GM.

Only Paul Brown and Bil Belichick were complete Football Program Coaches/GMs. They built the Administration, the College and Pro Scouting programs, selected both the players and Coaches and won, multiple times.

In the colleges there were/are complete Football Program Coach/GMs. Bear Bryant, Jimmy Johnson, and Bill's friend and possible successor, Nick Saban.

This is definitely true.

I thiink coach Belichick should definitely be in the discussion for coach of the year. This season has been his finest in my honest opinion. This team isn't that talented but somehow he's been able to cultivate and maximize that to get the best results possible.

11-4 didn't seem plausible after all this team has had to endure going into this season, and yet, here they are, still churning along the way. It's been a highly impressive coaching job done this season. Adam Schefter made a great point when siphoning through coach of the year candidates in a piece for ESPN:
Belichick has basically proved the NFL draft meaningless, coaching up a team Sunday that included an offense that started seven undrafted free agents -- three on the offensive line, both wide receivers, both running backs -- that handed the Baltimore Ravens their worst home loss in franchise history. Belichick has had many great seasons, but this might just be his single-best coaching job.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

If not for Bill's game plans and methodology to his madness - NO WAY - is this team 11-4. Tom gets much love and HUGE credit, but Bill's game plans keep Tom in the game and put him just where he wants to be with the game on the line. Tom has been amazing with little on O for most of the season and Bill has been amazing with little on D for most of the season. I do not know how it will play out - the refs BETTER NOT screw it up - but I will truly appreciate this season ALMOST as much as those when we hoisted the trophy. Bill and Tom WILL NOT get the accolades or awards they deserve, but at least REAL sports fans will appreciate what they saw/see/will see. The media will "appreciate" it when it all comes to an end, but we are truly seeing another LEGENDARY Boston-area (NE) sporting accomplishment. We may not be hoisting Lombardi's every year, but NO team is and in a league of parity - Bill and Tom bring stability and consistency. 2013 will be a special season in my eyes as far as the Patriots go. The BEST part is it is NOT over yet.

I think all the tricks will come out in the playoffs. We need to play 16 quarters of our best football. I have no doubt we can win it all, if talib, Arrington, and dennard return to 100%. If those get healthy, and vereen, amendola, edelman, KT and Dobson can produce, we could play some great complimentary football IMO, and have enough to win it all.

We have already seen what can happen when "ducks fall in a row" - we just haven't seen it happen for us as of yet.

First-year payoff - Pats rookies make key contributions| Boston Herald

In the aftermath of last April’s draft, the Patriots’ group of rookies were void of the star power that consumed their previous three classes. There were no assumed starters in the mix, just a collection of solid players who had a chance to carve out a niche in the right opportunity.

Now, on the eve of the regular-season finale, it’s obvious Bill Belichick leaned on his rookies to the highest degree. In fact, nine started at least one game this season, more than any team in the NFL, and the 53 combined starts is second only to the Jets (61).

The Patriots navigated through a torturous number of injuries this season to be in position to claim a first-round bye tomorrow with a victory against the Bills. Their success is even more remarkable because of the number of first-year players with significant roles. It’s simply unparalleled by other winning teams across the league, and that speaks to Belichick’s coaching job this season.

“I like our rookie class. We came in pretty deep,” wide receiver Aaron Dobson said. “I feel like we’re all doing a good job. A lot of us have stepped up and made plays, so I’m happy for all of us.”

The contributions also exceeded those of many of Belichick’s previous classes. The 2000 roster got starts from 10 rookies, and the current Patriots would need a surprise start tomorrow from defensive end Michael Buchanan, linebacker Steve Beauharnais or offensive lineman Chris Barker to reach that mark. However, the 2000 class only had 25 starts from those 10 players, more role players than prominent contributors.

The Pats’ star-studded 2010 group amassed 58 starts from seven rookies. The current Patriots could match the total starts tomorrow if defensive tackle Chris Jones (10 starts), Dobson (eight), linebacker Jamie Collins (seven), cornerback Logan Ryan (six) and safety Duron Harmon (two) all start. Don’t rule out wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins (eight) or left guard Josh Kline (one), either.

If this team gets to and wins the Super Bowl, this Patriots season should be up for consideration for greatest coaching acheivement of all time. Similarly this season should be the first season pointed to when discussing Brady as the GOAT, should that happen.

With every win and play-off appearance, BB adds to the argument that he is the greatest NFL coach of all time. The disadvantage to coaches prior to free agency (Walsh, Gibbs, Noll, Lombardi) is that they never were given the opportunity to compete. Walsh always sticks out from the rest as he was creative and would waive players when they still had athletic value (Ronnie Lott).
We are talking Superbowl for a team which has lost arguably 4 out of its top 5 players from a year ago, and that list does not even include Welker. Amazing!

This would be a fantastic piece for a well researched article.

Yep, right on the money. What is most amazing about this franchise has been their consistency. They are in the hunt every season and it is led by coach and QB. Winning Super Bowl's is a b.tch, which is why there are no 12 time champs, and the hard capped free agent era has made it that much tougher.I have always felt that the Paul Brown analogy is the most accurate for Belichick and I think that's who his approach and his goals in the NFL have always been based upon. I think both he and Brady get another ring, and GOAT tags to go with it.
