Not sure if anyone else has this problem with the Herald* webpage, but every time I click on a Herald story it has that annoying REFRESH on the right sidebar.

*(I know it is the herald and they are often annoying -content wise anyway, but occassionally is still worth the click-read [if not Borg-azz]),

With my connection over here it is SLOW AS HELL and it doesnt just REFRESH THE SIDEBAR; it refreshes the ENTIRE PAGE - whiting out the story until it resets and then resets you back to paragraph 1 instead of where you had scrolled-read to by that point. It makes reading a 1-page story 2m story a 15 min long project.

So is there any way for me to turn off their annoyingly HORRIBLE web-design refresh feature?

I tried clicking on their web-master links and comment links and couldnt get their menus to work there either. Just overall a horrible web experience. that is what you get when you sub-contract to 5th graders I guess.

I need help with this too. Annoying as all hell, especially when you're at the bottom of the article and you have to start over after waiting for the page to refresh :D

Easiest answer may be to simply try another browser. Try Firefox or Chrome if you're using IE. If you have to use only one browser, the only way you can be helped -- if it's a browser issue -- you have to identify the browser you are using (fyi, this doesn't sound like a browser auto refresh setting -- though I could be wrong).
If it's not an issue that can be fixed through a browser config change, best I can suggest as quick fix is trying "NoScript" (noscript.net). Fyi, every website you go to will load several, even up to a dozen or more "cross scripts". Ads, animation/graphics, hyperlinks, feeds among other things are enabled/launched by a cross script loading when you first visit/load a website. It's possible some cross script(s) are causing this on your OC for some reason. No script will stop all of these and, basically, allow only the base webpage text and maybe a few images to load. This should keep the herald page from refreshing/doing what it is doing. After the base herald page loads, look to the no script button at the bottom right, click on it, enable only bostonherald.com. This should make the story links work. From there continue to enable, if needed, other cross scripts in the list (I don't think I have anything but base herald.com enabled).

Fyi, if you go with no script you'll need to click "allow all this page" for your common/verified sites such as patsfan.com.

This is commonly known as the "Curse of Borges"...

I replicated the issue using Internet Explorer. Good news, t issue did not occur with Chrome or Firefox. Use one of those browsers and your issue likely is resolved (no need to run a script blocker).

I don't have these problems...probably because i still have a boycott on Herald articles. Shame, they seem to have plenty of articles and catchy headlines, but such is the way of a stubborn soul like mine.

Thanks much for advice.

As I read 50-50 home and at work; the work laptop wont let me install outside software; and other browsers are limited. But at least at home I'm ok.

I do not like my projects in environments that mandate a single browser (almost always IE too, doesn't work well for me).

Be sure to give your desktop admin guy a gift card then tell him you research information specific to your job that has IE incompatibility issues (tell him you tried in compatibility mode too). If you are a .com, .edu or .org instead of .gov or .mil, I've found chances are good you can get an alternate browser installed onto your PC.

I ditched IE for Firefox several years ago and am darned happy. I haven't had any serious compatability issues with FF since the switch, and the updates have been seamless in installation and function.

And, FWIW, I am the same way, except that I won't click anything on the Boston Globe. I much prefer the Boston Herald. As long as the Globe is owned by the NYT, I won't give them so much as a single click. That's my personal opinion, however. YMMV, and that's quite alright. :D

Where have you been? The Globe hasn't been owned by the NYT since October.

This just in, "Man lands on the moon!"

I for one think this is all John Tomase's fault.

Maybe not financially, but in every other respect, it is the NYT Lite, with all the baggage that entails.

I haven't used IE in quite some time, as I use Firefox--and the issue has been occurring for awhile for me. I'm not sure that switching from IE to Firefox will do it, unless I have some settings hooked up incorrectly or something.

I was actually going to try and use IE :D
