Where does the Blount trade rank in the BB era?

And to all the geniuses that said he sucked. The man ripped off a big gain in his first pre season game and with little exception has played very very well ever since.

Agreed. "Blount is a mop-up guy and Ridley gets the hard yards." He has played well for the team when asked to run the ball, and somehow got wrapped into Ridley discussions. That's all Blount could do this year. He was asked to be the hammer at the end of the game to move the chains and put the game away, and has been that and more when given the reps. He has had a solid season, and deserves some credit.

As for the OP, he has done well and represents a good personnel decision. He does not yet rank against Moss, Dillon, Welker or Washington. Right now, he is a solid player and a contributor. We know where the story ends with those other guys. 600 yards, if that ends up being all he does, does not rank.

Ridley's career:

2,403 yards 4.4 ypc 20 TDs

Blount's career:

2,522 yards 4.5 ypc 18 TDs

Ridley this year:

699 yards 4.2 ypc 7 TDs

Blount this year:

583 yards 4.5 ypc 5 TDs

Blount's always been a starting caliber RB, he's just had a fumbling problem (sound familiar?) and maybe an attitude problem. The attitude is fixed, and he hasn't fumbled in 49 carries with his new technique, so maybe that's on the way of being fixed too.

I like the new running back rotation, as Ridley is finally being used as he was intended back when he was drafted in 2011; as a short yardage, power back. He compliments Blount well in this area since Blount seems to need a good head of steam before he starts knocking people over.

With Ridley and Vereen as 2015 FAs, hopefully we can extend Blount on the cheap next year.

Maybe we can give our coaches some credit too…he has a new technique that I am sure coaching had something to do with.

I like the trade, but let's get real. It was nowhere near some of the best trades Belichick has made. Here are the best (in no particular order):

  • A second for Corey Dillon
  • A fourth for Ted Washington
  • A fourth for Randy Moss
  • A second and a seventh for Wes Welker

Glad somebody else brought up the Ted Washington trade which is gets underplayed. Some of the draft pick trades like giving the Ravens a first and they drafted Kyle Boller and the Pats ended up with Eugene Wilson and Vince Wilfork shouldn't be forgotten either.

To balance it out.....in no particular order

Dwayne Starks for a 3rd
Derrick Burgess for a 3rd
Doug Gabriel for a 5th
Ocho Cinco for 5th + 6th
Albert Haynesworth 5th

Yeah, forgot about him. That was TW was a great pickup.

Its running back by commitee but its seems to me Blunt and Ridley have flip flopped roles. If i were to be asked who was the mop up guy i'd say Ridley.

Don't know about ranking, but he needs to learn about situational football quick. He run out of bounds when we needed to run the clock.
Then he did the Ray ray dance and I fell in love with him. That was so apt. He could have done that dance in the first half and it would have been premature. Timing of that dance was so punctuational.

Eh...middle of the pack. Don't let yesterday's game color your opinion. You have to look at the entirety of BB's era. That's a lot of years and trades. The best would probably be Welker.

getting antowain smith for nothing and short money was pretty good

mike vrabel was a good deal

You win some you lose some. There was very little risk involved in the Blount trade, and he has embraced his role and done well with his chances for the most part.

The Burgess, Haynesworth, and Ocho deals were tragic. The Burgess pick is the worst just based on the value of the lost pick. I would say BB uses those late picks as throwaways on rugby players anyway, but that rugby player is a good STer, and BB has hit in the 7th round two years in a row.

Totally forgot about Doug Gabriel. He got cut a handful of weeks later. Oh well, we got Moss shortly thereafter. Call it a make up trade.

However, one silver lining of the Duane Starks era was the absolutely hilarious posts on this board lamenting his play. Those were some golden times.

Threads like this demonstrate why it is so easy for the haters around here.Blount was trashed repeatedly by the "this is a crap roster, Belichick doesn't know what he is doing" crowd, yet when once again proven completely wrong they just go into silent mode and wait for their next opportunity to take a dump.

Amen Brother!

Don't forget Tavon Wilson, either. His soph campaign is a disaster he would love to forget, after a fairly respectable rookie showing. His nomination by these anti-Belichickian clowns as a prime example of BB's draft incompetence, means he is is constantly derided and can do nothing right.

Even when Tavon finally produces a superb play, a 74 yard "Pick 6" return, he can't win. The TV networks had cut away from the game to to something more "interesting". His INT return doesn't even make the replays.

Yup definitely worth a 7th and a track star. ^_^ BB stole a good football player.

clock killin corey dillon was a great name

Blount needs one....

To all the geniuses who were against this trade

Not me ... I've wanted a big back to among the group since Corey Dillon.

I love the misdirection calls and/or runs whichever ... he's good at those for a big dude.

Disagree with this. It was a 2nd and 9 after Ridley got stuffed on an up the middle run, and it was an off-tackle play. Maximum yardage was called for and Blount got 8 yards instead of 5 by running up the sideline. If he tries to stay in bounds the Pats get a 3rd and 4 instead of a 3rd and 1, and they barely picked up the first down as it was.

Doubt the coaches will be unhappy with his decision-making on that play.

Good lord, one more example of Brady standing around with his hand up waiting for someone to slap it! Somebody high five that guy already!

I agree with you. At first I yelled to stay in bounds too, but I quickly came to the realization that there wasn't anything at all that he could've done differently. That was not a situation where the coaches would've been pissed in my opinion.

Welker one may have technically been a trade, but it wasn't, really. Miami gave Welker the restricted FA tender that costs a 2nd-rounder. NE was working out a poison pill contract that Miami couldn't match, but it was eventually decided to throw in the 7th rounder and make it a trade so that way neither side had to worry about Welker potentially grieving the poison pill and dragging things out or possibly reversing it.

As an interesting sidelight to that, I recall someone here posting some time ago about how some technicality the transaction ultimately being a trade rather than a RFA signing ended up costing Welker a chunk of change (by eliminating negotiation leverage or something, I think), though I can't remember exactly why.
