I understand that many of you here are young, so you get a pass, but, not one single player mentioned above is in the same class as Bill Russell. And he did it in a much less watered down era than all of them.

* 11 titles in his 13 years, including 8 in a row. In the other two his team made the playoffs but lost in the finals one year and the Eastern finals in the other.
* His final two years as player/HC his team won it all both years, and the last win was on the road in LA in game 7 against the likes of Wilt, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West.
* Bill Russell was more dominant in his sport than Jimmy Brown was in his.

I would also add in 1 if in 1 only 2 years when Bill Russell DIDn't win a championship (against the St Louis Hawks, he had a foot injury and only played in 2 games of the Finals the Celts lost.

Only team Russell lost to in a series was the fabled 1967 6'er team.

Bill Russell is the greatest Team athlete I have seen in my 60+ years.

I think its harder to win the SB. You can't have a bad game in the playoffs; its one and done. You can't say, "Oh, we'll get 'em the next game." like in other sports.

That was a perfectly catchable ball, an NFL level receiver should make that catch, most of them would make that catch, Welker literally dropped the ball.

^ This. Our star WR drops the pass that would have most likely clinched the Pats 4th Lombardi while in each of the last two Pats SB's the opposition's JAG receivers make the most difficult catches of their lives in the most do or die situations. Kinda makes you sick to think about what might have been.

He took a year and a half off, in the single most inexplicable decision ever made by a superstar athlete. And the NBA required Jordan so much that this was never discussed, just glossed over. Yep, the greatest competitor of all time decided he didn't want to compete! Or, maybe he was grieving his father. In public. On buses with young kids.

The Jordan retirement needs to negatively effect his legacy, not promote it. If all he cares about is being the best basketball player of all time (and that's all he cares about, he is an abject failure at every other aspect of life other than hawking product like he's Vince Shlomi), then this should be a true detriment.

Nobody has ever bothered to explain why he left. If he was grieving his dead father, it doesn't make sense to do so by staying in the public eye and playing professional baseball, something he had no business doing (he was taking at bats away from actual prospects at the Double A level). If he had truly accomplished everything he could on the court (which is what he said at the time), why was he diving back in less than 18 months later so Nick Anderson could steal the ball from him and knock him out of the playoffs?

Plus Jordan never once beat a great team in the playoffs. The Barkley Suns, Stockton and Malone when they were past their prime, and the Sonics were a year away until Kemp started drinking. Don't give me a Knicks team that could not shoot or dribble either.

I'm so bored with the Jordan myth. He's one of the greatest athletes I've ever seen. He's not this winged beast that magically graced us with his presence. He was a guy with a great turnaround jumper and a guy with a personality disorder.

I don't think I've ever liked a post on a forum more than this one.

Bill Russell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My defense of Bill Russell is to ask this question. If Michael Jordan played in the 60's would he be considered the greatest (oh man, could he jump right).
Bill Russell once jumped his own height.

Skip could write a column tomorrow which dumps all over Brady and the Pats. This piece is meaningless to me considering the author. It's fool's gold.

Thanks Kontra, it's a wildly unpopular opinion when I express it, but it's usually because people don't like looking behind the curtain. Just spoon feed me what to think Nike and Gatorade!

Care to take a stab at poking any holes in the argument? Every single thing I wrote was fact. I understand there are hardcore Jordan fans, and that's fine. But the "Jordan was an immaculate God who never missed a shot" crowd simply were too young to remember watching him play or don't care to stop and look at the fact.

And I say that as someone who believes, nay, KNOWS, that Jordan was legitimately robbed blind of 3 MVP awards. Barkley/Malone/Malone were simply the writers getting tired of voting for the same guy.

The hate that Skip Bayless receives by some is simply amazing to say the least. I don't agree with everything Skip says and I think his antics at times can be a bit over the top. However, I think he's a good analyst who often gives good insight and evaluations on various players. If you take away Skip's over the top antics and you usually get some well thought out useful analysis.
Is Skip always correct? No. But what analyst is?
Just my two cents.

Personally, I don't mind him either, Christiancat. I don't think he's great or anything, but I don't think he's nearly as awful as some suggest. Then again, I probably don't follow the ins/outs of it as closely as some may.

By the way, check out this pic of Shane Vereen. I didn't realize that he was openly religious. It's a pretty cool pic of him pointing to the sky, with the caption "Give thanks to HIM." : http://instagram.com/p/iNjHj4TbI-/#

He isn't an analyst on TV. He's an actor. Do you believe that all these shows on ESPN just happen to have two guys that are somewhat friends, but just can't agree on anything? It's all scripted. Reality TV is so far out of the realm of reality and it sucks so many people into a delusional void.

He is, but he is a big time Pats homer. And that's OK with this homer, in my book. :D. I have a good friend of mine who's a Dallas fan. And we both tolerate him for his Pats and Cowboys love. We actually had this discussion tonight over a couple cold ones after work. Now Steven A.?......

Skip Bayless wrote a book about the Dallas Cowboys, in which he asserted that Troy Aikman was gay. He had not asked Troy Aikman if he was gay, and he had absolutely no tangible proof. That is a trash thing to do to someone, whether you think being gay is a bad thing or not (I personally do not). Aikman allegedly contemplated hiring someone to kick Bayless' azz, so he was not too pleased by that.

There are mountains of absurd and ludicrous things that Bayless has said and written over the years, but that one alone is enough to make me swear off his credibility forever. You simply cannot call yourself a journalist and write a journalistic book and in the middle of it speculate about someone's sexual orientation to try to sell more books.

Skip Bayless does not deserve anyone's respect.

I agree.

Cool pic Supa. I didn't know that about Vereen. God bless him for giving his proper thanks to God.

I never read the book or heard of it till now. However, I have nothing against Skip. But if this is true than that's pretty messed up.

Wow! really? I did not know that. That's pretty screwed up.

Is there a reason that you have come to attack me in numerous threads. When I have done nothing to you? I stand up for Kurt Warner in a thread a few months ago and you allude that it's because of my shared beliefs with Kurt. Now you want to say that I like Skip simply because of Tebow. Whatever, my reasons happen to be for my support of these people shouldn't concern you. I try to live my life bettering myself daily. You on the other hand seem like you want to start trouble for some reason. I ignored your post to me in the Kurt thread, but now you're doing a similar move in another thread. Which happens to be this thread.

Skip Bayless insight----

--Last year he left LeBron James out of his list of Top 5 players in the NBA. LeBron is the best player in the universe. This cannot be argued with a straight face unless you are an actor who lies on TV for money

--Skip Bayless says that in the NBA, he is "totally against taking America-born white players in the first round of the draft." That is absolutely not analysis, and it is racist as well.

--He called Tim Tebow the next Brett Favre. Brett Favre threw football hard.

He simply is not an analyst, he is an imbecile actor who has figured out a way to troll America and make money doing so. He screams daily about things he either knows nothing about or makes up on the spot.
