Media's bizarre deification of Peyton Manning continues

Feel free to explain to me how Manning is more deserving than any number of professional sportsmen who have won things in 2013 and are active members in the community. Apparently, this is the method of award this year.

I could careless about NASCAR but imo Jimmy Johnson should have gotten the award for being the greatest race car driver of all time.

I am always amazed that golfers can be considered great "athletes"while guys who drive bumper to bumper at 200 miles per hour aren't. It takes a million times more athletic ability to have the reactions to drive that fast in a crowd on tough tracks than it does to sink a 15 foot putt.

It's probably because most people don't share an appreciation for the difficulty of competition at the elite level Ivan. I don't particularly see Ten Pin Bowling as an athletic endeavour. That doesn't mean the World Champion is any less of a World Champion than a sprinter or swimmer.

Patriot fans' bizarre hatred/jealousy/insecurity of Peyton Manning continues

I don't hate Manning, I think he is one of the greatest QB's of all time, but when it came to the MVP voting for this season my feeling was that if Brady led this team to the #1 seed then he should get it, however that isn't going to happen and if Manning leads the Bronco's to the #1 seed and has the stats he does then he should get it. I don't believe stats alone deserve the award, they should be tied to team success, which is what makes it "valuable."

At this point it is between Wilson and Manning, both lead good teams to # 1 seeds and it's a regular season award, Manning gets it because he achieves both the seed and the stats.

Now I do think Manning has benefitted from pretty ideal playing conditions and think his career would look different if he had faced the elements the way Brady and Rodgers have. It could be that he would actually have acclimated to it and become better than he has been in adverse circumstances, and that wouldn't surprise me because he is a great player and most of the all time greats are able to adapt. Unfortunately for him he still carries the onus of being both weak in bad weather and big games, and when you stack that up all the great numbers in the world will never overcome it, because like the coach the only numbers that matter in the end for QB's are wins and championships. Manning is an incredible passer, but you have to be more than that as a QB to be the GOAT, and he's never going to reach that status. He could end up top 5 if he adds another ring, but that's where his climb ends. He's a great, no question, but he gets treated like the greatest, and i think that is what burns so many people up.

should be Ortizot James, hands down.

Ortiz had a good season and ridiculous post-season.

James capped an MVP regular season with a phenomenal post-season, and has gotten even better this season (shooting like 60/40/80).

with James, there isn't even a (real, objective) debate as to who is the best in his sport right now, there is with manning.

The only award David Ortiz deserves is PED Athlete of the Year. If it weren't for A-Rod he would be the biggest phony in professional sports. The fact that he actually called for lifetime ban for any PED users when he was doing them the entire time makes him the biggest hypocrite of any athlete I have ever seen. I can't stand the guy.

Of course, it might actually help if you had some facts to back up your case, but then again why let facts get in the way? You have a 10-year old leaked report of a test that may (or may not) have been PEDs. Hmmm. Sounds like you're ready to hang Ortiz in effigy.

He went on the air at WEEEI to say all PED users should be banned for life, and he tested positive for doing them and his argument was that no one was ever supposed to know. He's a world class hypocrite.

I am not a Red Sox fan nor a hater, they have players I like and players I don't, but Ortiz is the one guy who I really can't stand. Great clutch player, but also a world class phony.

*I don't even care about PED's that much, i think they have been rampant in sports for years, however calling for lifetime bans for something you are doing is as bad as it gets.

BTW_I actually listened to the Ortiz PED's press conference when he hid behind his defense lawyer and absolutely refused to answer any questions and defended himself by having his lawyer say we weren't supposed to find out. Beyond that all it takes is one look to see that Ortiz followed the Brady Anderson path to success and went from nothing to Babe Ruth overnight.

If you really want I will provide his career splits to prove it, but I am pretty sure it isn't necessary, and this is a football forum.

The "splits" are that once he came to Boston and became an everyday player with half his games being played in a field with a ridiculously short left center fence, he started hitting an awful lot of home runs.

The alleged positive test is a concern, but there is absolutely zero evidence from the statistics that he juiced. To compare his career path to Brady Anderson is ridiculously ignorant. Anderson went from 16 HR's to 50 the next season (playing for the same team and roughly an equal amount of games). Ortiz did not do anything even remotely similar.

They've been testing for a couple years now in baseball and he still had an over 1 OPS last year and 30 HR's this year, not to mention arguably the greatest postseason performance in baseball history.

He had was listed as having an inconclusive result on a list that had more names than were even tested

Lmao-Yes, and Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens and A-Rod are all innocent as well..........................

You simply cannot make this sh.t up, too funny.

you never saw ortiz in front of congress.

why would ortiz need a defense attorney ? he didn't break any laws. get your facts straight, hater. this is who he was with discussing the leak of confidential tests results.

As I indicated, this is your assumption, not a known fact. I understand you 100% believe this; that doesn't make it a fact.

Sorry to have derailed Peyton's thread. I like Peyton a lot and he's had a really good year. But to name him 2013 Sportsman of the Year over Ortiz or Rivera was stupid.

Uh, you do realize that Brady won it something like 8 or 9 years ago, right?

yes but when he won it 2005, he just won his 3rd SB (Feb 2005) in four years . . . they did not give it to him in 2007 and instead gave it to Favre . . . so as great season versus titles, SI chooses titles, but not do it this year . . . they could of simply waited until Manning won the title next Feb. and given him the award next Dec, but perhaps they were worried that he might not win it . . .

And to think we've been discussing this award as if it had some legitimacy.

It's not jealousy or infatuation over Peyton it's more of anger towards the media when our QB has always done more with less in their respective careers yet they just seem to always prefer Peyton. Tom Brady deserves way more praise than Peyton I know who doesn't care about that, but I do it angers me seeing people actually believing that Peyton is better than Tom. There's no other QB in this generation perhaps of all time better than TB12
