I have an untrained mind in watching defensive players, however, when I watch Steve Gregory, I can swear I am watching Patrick Chung.
I have been seeing Gregory take the most horrible of angles at tackling, fly with reckless abandonment into patriots players in the name of trying to make plays.
Those much more acute in discerning defense, please explain to me what Gregory is doing out there and how is he any different from Chung or for that matter me! I can also close my eyes and pretend as if I am trying to tackle and just fly when anybody with the ball comes close.

Hopefully they'll bring back Sergio Brown and bench this dud.

Gregory has been pretty good this year, and after one bad game the pitchforks come out.

Figures.

You are posting this now because he played poorly in the Dolphins game. He has played well all year before yesterday. He was very inconsistent last year.

I hate to disagree but I think you're way off on this one - Josh Barrett is a much better option. Plus his legs are fresh he hasn’t played a down since 11/6/2011…

Gregory > Chung

Gregory actually reminds me of James Sanders, though slightly better against the run. Some bad angles sometimes, but smart and tough. That's not a bad thing to be as a Safety 2.

100% agreed, and I'm done with Gostowski. Dude's been garbage all year. Can't even get a kickoff in bounds  and what about Ben VaReene only 3 catches? and Danny Amenchoka can't catch to save his life. This team is toast and on its way to 10-6. And what in the world was McDaniels thinking when he called for an interception on the last play of the game?

This is the first time ive seen someone post negative about gregory and couldnt agree more. This has been more then 1 bad game he has been horrible ever sense he has come back from his injury he cant cover anyone or tackle.. Duron Harmon was actually playing well when he was given the chance.

Gregory is a fine 2nd or 3rd safety and is much better than Chung ever was in coverage and tackling. That said, Gregory has been a below average tackler and an average coverage guy his entire career from SD to now with the Pats. Watch tape from last year or this year, he has a tendency to lower his head and throw his shoulder too often instead of trying to wrap up the offensive player causing him to miss tackles. He will also take terrible / stupid angles to the ball carrier once in a while. Normally, he is smart / instinctive enough that he can hide these deficiencies. However, they both reared their ugly head on two of the bigger plays in yesterday's game.

Personally, I would prefer to see Harmon on the field a bit more in obvious passing situations. From limited action in the NFL and his college tape, Harmon looks to be much more natural in coverage than Gregory seems to be. He also has better ball skills that could potentially help with the turnover shortage the past few games.

Chung is dung and rotten egg Greg

What Gregory continually does, IMO, as far as picking bad angles and not being able to properly tackle is through no fault of his own. He is just physically limited in what he can do. While his football IQ is solid and perhaps above average, he just doesn't have the speed, size, or instinct to keep up with NFL receivers. This sometimes causes him to overthink or become overcautious when picking a tackle angle.

The big question to me is why he continually starts back there- I can only imagine that it is because he makes the least amount of errors and gives up the least big plays, and that seems to be what BB values above purely talented but boneheaded plays.

That says more about what we've been conditioned to believe good Safety play has become in New England. Gregory is a depth player thrust into the role of starter. Truthfully, I'd rather suffer the rookie learning curve and bring Harmon along so he's ready to go from Day 1 in 2014.

Gregory starts because of the alternatives, and I don't say that to be flip.

Harmon may be a good starter eventually. Tavon Wilson almost certainly never will be. Gregory is the best they've got for now, but he's far from a solid starter. That said, he's much, much better than Pat Chung. Of course, that requires nothing more than having a pulse.

Personally, I'm going to be outraged until our team is 30 million under the cap and has top 5 players at every position.

Right.. it doesn't seem as if any of the other safeties we have know the system as well, or have the tangibles (talent, etc) to justify starting them over a proven vet. Not sure what is the deal with Harmon or Wilson as I haven't been following that situation closely.

Sounds like you will have some free time coming up these next few weeks, why even bother to watch the games?
