Seriously this is from a Guy who since his return has caught 8 - 8 - 5 and 12 balls now 3 for a paltry 8 yards. How could a receiver as dynamic as him be so ineffective in one game? With Gronk gone we are going to need this guy to make plays in the passing game more than ever. We are not going to win alot of games with his performance yesterday. Vereen better make it up against the Ravens.

The Dolphins built their defense on stopping Vereen. He became more of a decoy. He helped to open up a lot of plays for Edelman and Amendola.

Miami taking him out of the game. Simples

There's not a lot he could do. The Phins did what the Pats like to do. Identify one thing your do really well on offense and take that away. They knew that Vereen was going to be one of their main weapons now that Gronk is out and they schemed to take him away. Tip your cap.

The only time we went to Vereen it was a swing out in the flat and Miami was sniffing that **** out all day long. I don't know what they did to disrupt him on other patterns he runs but it worked well.

They have to design more plays to get the ball in his hands, Vereen has an advantage being that he can release untouched from the backfield. I blame play design yesterday I don't even want to get started on McDaniels with his mind numbing play calls yesterday.

Miami has a lot of speed in their LB corps. They're pretty much the exact opposite of what the Patriots have, which are big thumpers (Collins aside).

Thats what bothers me I find that unbelieveable...Vereen is not a scrub and Miami is not the 85 Bears on Defense!

why is it always the pats fault when sometime like this happens? MIA took him out of the game and covered him well

+1

It's not like Miami bracketed him like when teams defended Welker or Moss SMH. They just had a LB spy on him.

I think it's time to put this guy in on 90% of the plays. He's that good and that valuable.

Fantasy Football has made casual fans more aware of matchups. It actually has encouraged more people to be informed of what's going on the field.

The first thing is Vereen only was out there for just over 50% of the snaps (48/81) yesterday. The second thing is Vereen is a RB and his success is reliant on the scheme of the defense, he was getting picked up by 2-3 defenders often times. Vereen may not have done a lot in the stats department but his presence did open things up for Edelman and Amendola they often times were not being doubled because the safeties were covering Vereen.

How could that happen? Hmmm. You don't think the defense was keying on him now, do you?

The same way Rob Gronkowski, in his record destroying 2011 season, could be held to 1 catch for 15 yards by the Oakland fricken Raiders. And I love Vereen, but Gronk is a much better player, certainly that season. Sometimes, the defense just has a good gameplan against a player and executes well.

On teams comprised of only WRs and RBs.

2 carries in some 48 snaps might be the more concerning number. The guy ostensibly creates matchup problems by theoretically being a running back the defensive must devote a linebacker to.

When Ridley or Blount were out there, it was 19 carries on 33 snaps.

To compare: Woodhead is getting a steady diet of about 7 carries a game in San Diego, never lower than 5 (in games he fully played). He's averaging about 3.9 yards a carry, which is bleh for a third-down back, but it does mean when he's on the field it's not like Philip Rivers is leaning over the center and whispering in the ears of the DL "we're passing on this play. Oh, and the snap count is 2."

Where's the Shane Vereen that rattled off 101 yards on 14 carries against Buffalo?

Miami didn't really take him out of the game. Rather, the injury to Solder took him out of the game, at least in terms of being an explosive playmaker.

The Patriots had to bring Hoomanawanui in on every snap to block (and occasionally slip out for a pass), and Vereen had to stay at home to pass protect, which he is very very good at (like Kevin Faulk; much better than Woodhead ever was). The bottom line is that Vereen's presence may not have showed up on the stat sheet in this game, but without his blitz pickup Brady would have never had the time to make any of his throws in the second half. He essentially picked up (some of) the slack for our interior line which went from mediocre to abysmal when Kline came in.
