yankees sign ellsbury!!!

god I hate when a all star player of the redsox wins a ws and then goes to the Yankees the next year[ johnny damon]
i knew he would be gone but to the Yankees? i find this deflating to say the least

definitely annoying, but not shocking. Sox were right not to spend that much on him.

We're definitely going to miss what Ellsbury brings to the Red Sox but that contract and the term, is laughable. Congrats to Ellsbury securing that contract but letting him go was the right decision given those numbers.

Professional lead off hitters don't grow on trees unfortunately and Victorino's ailments will limit a consistency at the top of the lineup. The lack of runs stemming from the top of the order will be a challenging obstacle, but the heart of any baseball offense is in the middle of the lineup and the Saux must secure their future power/average 3/4 guy soon. Ortiz is a short timer and maybe Bogarts can slide into the 3 hole in a couple of years....but the future of the offense is dependent on the next legacy guy....Manny to Ortiz to WHO?
I have to believe Cherington is in minor league stockpile mode thinking of the future. And that future will be built in the trade market...a cost effective approach that gets players in their prime. For this to work....you need chips....and Ben is doing a nice job accumulating supplemental picks to add to a stocked farm system of arms.
Just a question of time before Mr. Stanton arrives...right?

Not the same as Damon. Damon claimed he would never sign with the Yankees and that money would never be a factor.... and then he signs with them because of money. So he lied. That was a kick to the gut.

This...not so much. Hurts to see Ellsbury go but that's yet another awful contract they've got over there. Not sad about that.

This was a foregone conclusion two years ago, IMO. Boras was going to fleece someone for extravagant money, which made the market limited to the two LA's, the two NY's and a handful of other teams. He was presented as one of the top free agents available, and the Yankees seem to always get the guy that is presented as the #1 guy. The Yankees got sucked in to Boras' spin machine, and he wrung out every dollar. Fleeced.

I am not going to bash Ellsbury, he's a fine player. I don't see him as a cornerstone of a franchise, but a cog in the machine. The Sox were never going to sign him to this kind of contract, so good luck to him.

what bothers me about it is he was just pouring champagne on his redsox teammates and celebrating a ws championship. and now hes in pine stripes. I hated it when damon did it and I hate it now. I have no problem with the sox moving on from him and it wouldn't bother me if he left after a year that didn't end in a championship or if he just went to another team. i hate that he went to the Yankees after he just won a title with the sox. fingers crossed they lose cano.

What chance they ink Cano now?

If Someone takes one of the Yanks free agents that had an offer and the Yanks receive that 1st rd pick does that transfer to the Red sox, or are they set with the Yanks 2nd rounder now?

I never looked at this guy as anything but a mercenary. Boras was never going to let him sign in Boston, NY was always going to be woo'd. I never understood why fans (pink hats mostly) loved this guy. He was never going to be here long term, he was never a dirt dawg, never one of "us".

Performing 1 year in 2 isn't something worth handing out that sort of contract for.

agreed with most of this, but not sure about the "dirt dawg" thing, depending on what you mean by it.

I think he got a bad rap regarding "softness" due to his injuries. But the injuries he didn't play through weren't the kind of injuries I expect a baseball player to play through. Broken ribs aren't something you fake, and they're probably not conducive to swinging a bat -- just 1 example.

When healthy he was a very good player for us, much better than some other guys who have endeared themselves to Sox fans by getting their uniforms dirty, even when that was just an indication of bad play (e.g., late jumps) or fake hustle (diving when unnecessary)

I also found him to be a pretty exciting player (when playing). His speed made him fun to watch.

It was clear he wasn't coming back, and it's been clear for a while that he would be leaving. and furthermore, they were right not to give him this kind of contract, imo. But for now. the team is worse off.

Paying players ridiculous money on contracts that take them well past their prime and giving up high draft picks to do it is no way to build a franchise. I'm really going to miss watching Els play at the same time I'm very looking forward to watching the plethora of great looking young talent on the farm succeed. Our farm system is loaded, the Yankees cupboard is bare and not going to improve anytime soon.

My comment of "dirt dawg" is defined as : He's closer to Nomar, sitting out with a hangnail, than Jeter, who bloodies himself diving in the stands for a foul ball.
