I'm in a speech class in San Jose State and my professor is a huge huge Peyton Manning fan like the guy adores him, with that being said he is someone who will listen and debate with you for fun and is not close minded even with all his Manning love-fest. He has proposed us a deal were if someone can convince him and the class that there is a QB greater then him currently he will give us a open note midterm. I have my QB Tom Brady obviously and want to ask all of you how I can get it through his head that he is better then PM. I have a lot of rebuttals, but I think I'll have a problem if he mentions Patriots defense vs Colts defense and that Manning never had the luxury of having Bill Belichick as his head coach. So any info on this everlasting debate for Brady's favor would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the cluttered post I'm on my phone ha.

Great...now this "prof" is gonna flunk every kid in the class wearing a Pats hat. I had a professor of chemistry my freshman year at B.U. He was from Texas, and a total yee haw redneck. 412 students in the class and he flunked every freshman...390 if I remember correctly. The final exam he gave was easily a six hour, in depth exam...time limit? two hours. There were twelve suicides immediately following the posted grades....2 from the 7th floor of my West Campus dorm. I went to my R.A. to get an explanation for my D and he told me the Professor gave strict instructions...no scale. I finished 3/4's of the exam without a mistake... D...the highest mark in the class anybody got.In fact, more than 3/4's were F's. So I'm a little pizzed off, as anyone who's been a member here can imagine. I go straight to his office down in Kenmore, storm into his office and his elderly grandma, grey haired secretary says to me..."well, I've been expecting some of you, you're the first one.." with this grandmotherly smile on her face. WTF???? So I try to be as polite as possible, because believe me, I WANT this azzole and she hits me with the hammer.."oh, professor left for a tenureship at U.T. 2 weeks ago...sorry...he won't be back"....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

That was 1970. Long hair, bell bottoms, free love,Yippies, hippies and open drug use. Professor was a cowboy hat wearing John Wayne wannabe with the guts of a Texas tick.I learned one thing from that year...those that CAN...DO...those that can't..become professors.

You mean, nobody was ever originally predestined to become a professor?

Of course I'm generalizing, Tunes...ooops..there I go again...gonna catch hell tonight for my sarcasm again. To any professors out there I may have offended, I apologize, I had great professors, especially my English professor...she was of Russian extraction....Nora... Nora something...oh yeah, Nora Toratitov...YOW!

Just show him playoff TD to INT ratio of player A and player B and let him decide.

This hits it out of the ballpark. I will say Manning is the greatest REGULAR season QB ever. Come playoffs, his numbers are mediocre compared to the regular season. The year they won the SB, Manning had 4 TDs and 7 INTs in the playoffs and SB combined. 1 TD pass and 2 INTs in that SB win. Colts rushed for over 175 yards and their D stifled an inept Bears offense. No way Manning deserved that SB MVP. Of course he blew it in his other SB game throwing a huge pick 6.

I seriously hope that wasn't too blunt for the easily offended sensibilities of Supafly. That is just my sarcastic opinion of this professor. I do not know how to phrase it any other P.C. ,unicorns and rabbits way.

Don't mean to be easily offended, Mr.Kerr. It's just the use of the all caps, pushy sarcasm, and sometimes general pissiness where you tend to demean more than get your point across. It seems like if you disagree about anything, you come ready to battle with the gloves on. You're old--I'm worried you may blow a gasket ;)

Like I said last night, please accept my apologies if I offended you--because that is never my intention with anyone. I would never ask nor expect you to walk on eggshells for me, or anyone. You are who you are, and I think that is a very intelligent guy and a good poster whom I consider a friend. That said, I've tried hard to show you respect over the years, so I'm just asking for the same in return.

One thing I don't want to do is drag this on, especially since I was very impressed with the way that you and I quickly worked it out and moved on within a couple of posts. There's not much need to bring it up again in a different thread the next day.

If we were at the strip club I would buy you a beer and a lapdance...that's about all I can say about it.

sure there is...oh..BTW...I win again!!!! and you KNOW what THAT means, doncha....

VICTORY PARADE!!!

Will this debate happen after the game in a week? Well what happens in that game can help you out i think. Plus you can simply show him the easy fact in math: 3 is bigger than 1, no debates needed there!

OK...I admit it...I trolled you on purpose...this place has been D-E-A-D daid late night the past few weeks.

it's like press to me...any response is a good response at this point..:biggrin2:

Fair enough buddy. It has been dead at night, which is when I generally finally get away from the wife long enough to get an hour or two for myself.

I'm serious about this whackjob "professor" too...(Please be quiet - edited) and TEACH...

My concern would be that we're decimated on the defensive side this year, and DEN's weapons seem to be rolling at the moment (which we all know doesn't necessarily mean they'll be rolling in a couple of months).

I'd hate to have the debate, which is pretty clear cut and favors Brady tremendously as a whole, depend on ONE lousy regular season game; especially in a year where the Broncos seem to have the upper hand and are probably better than 50/50 to come out ahead.

There are a ton of numbers that back Brady up, including SB appearances/rings, AFCCG's, playoff wins, records broken, winning percentage, etc...my only concern would be throwing that all away for the hope that we win the annual matchup this year vs Manning. Just my thoughts.

What are you talking about? Manning achieved his childhood dream: throwing a game-winning Super Bowl touchdown for the Saints! :D

Do they teach punctuation and spelling in school anymore?

I would focus on five points plus a thermonuclear option.

1. The winning playoff record by Brady, and the choking by Manning. BUT... he will come back at you with Spygate. What most regular fans don't know about Spygate is that the Patriots hadn't played the Eagles or the Panthers that season so the Patriots did not have videotape on those teams when they beat them.

2. Brady has a better QB rating both indoors and outdoors. He's better than Manning outdoors, better than Manning in domes, even though Manning has a higher overall rating. This is because Manning has a lot more games in domes, and ratings are much higher in domes for all QBs.

3. If he brings up that Brady padded his stats in 2007 by staying in games too long, then mention that Brady threw his 50th TD in less time played through the season than Manning threw his 49th TD in his record year. Brady actually surpassed Manning in time played during their record years at some point in the 4th quarter, after he had already thrown his 50th TD. This means Brady was pulled from games quicker than Manning was in those respective years.

4. If someone mentions Brady only won with defense, point out that the Panthers scored 29 points in 31 minutes of that Super Bowl, that the defense was a sieve, and that Brady had to put up a top 5 performance yardage wise to lead his team to victory. Not to mention the fact that Manning had receivers like Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, while Brady was working with Deion Branch, David Givens and Daniel Graham. Manning was supported with great offensive weapons catching the ball. Brady had good weapons.

5. If he says the Patriots played great when Brady got hurt while the colts went into the tank, point out these 3 things. One, the Patriots went from 18 wins with Brady against a schedule with 13 games against playoff teams, while with Cassel they fell to 11 wins (7 less) against a very weak schedule. Cassel, meanwhile, had even better stats two years later with the Chiefs and made the Pro Bowl. The Colts QB after Manning, Painter, was a scrub never to be heard from again. In fact, when they sat Painter for journeyman Orlovsky, he lead them to two victories. They tanked the year with Painter. And the next year a rookie QB lead them to the playoffs. This argument about the dropoff in level of play neglects the fact that there was a huge dropoff in the Patriots level of play, and it also disregards the level of play given to their teams by Cassel, Orlovsky, Painter and Luck.

If all else fails, the thermonuclear option. There are no records or allegations of Brady ever sexually molesting a woman. Manning, however, paid off a trainer for sitting with his anus and scrotum pressed against her face.

Also, undefeated regular season for brady. Most playoff wins of any QB.

Your prof will likely bring up that manning is going to break brady's TD record this year. You can point out at manning hasn't faced anyone good yet and is running up the score against lesser opponents whereas in 07 brady threw 50 TDs against playoff caliber teams and had a tough schedule.

The first thing you have to do is to define what is meant by a great QB and then proceed to say how brady meets that criteria. You have to focus on his accomplishments and not stats. Your prof will likely spin it and say stats over accomplishments.

Let's see. Brady has the advantage in:

  • Indoor QB rating (so Brady is better on the road than Manning was at home) - Manning has Brady by 1 point overall (because he has played 99 more games in a dome) and .1 outdoors (because he played most of his outdoor games in warm weather).
  • Brady has played his entire career outdoors in the Northeast; up until last year, Manning played a bare minimum of nine games a year in a dome.
  • Manning has had continuity of talented receivers, including several Hall of Famers; Brady has had a constantly changing cast of receivers.
  • Head-to-head record
  • Career winning %, by a lot
  • Career playoff winning %, not even close
  • TD-to-int %, not even close
  • Super Bowls played and won, not even close

That's not even taking into account the single season passing records, the fact that Brady's was the league's first unanimous MVP in the same season the team traded his #1 WR, and the TD streak.

Also 21 game winning streak from 03-04.
