. @AdamSchefter: Patriots safety Steve Gregory broke his thumb and is expected to be sidelined a few weeks, per league sources.

Looks like Harmon will be starting at safety vs. Denver, he better learn quick.

Edit: Breer suggests he could play anyway:

. @AlbertBreer: Patriots S Steve Gregory has a broken thumb. He may not miss a game, b/c of the timing. That likely depends on whether he can play w/a cast.

Harmon the other starting safety vs. Denver, he better learn quick.

Denver is 19 days away. A few weeks and 19 days might mean the same thing. I am guessing if he's close, he plays.

I wish him a speedy and setback free recovery.

Next man up!

Exactly what I was thinking

Is Tavon Wilson doing anything noteworthy this season except committing ST penalties?

Edit: My error -- the recent one was his first. I thought there had been several.

My god, who else is left to get injured? McCourty? This is almost comical.

The fact that this team is even competitive with all these losses is just ridiculous. As good as the coaching job in 2008 was, this is even better.

Broken thumb will take two months to heal and it will lost a lot of its strength. A cast it is, for the rest of the season.

This is a very common injury, and I'm really surprised it doesn't happen more often. In high school, it seemed like half of us had had a broken thumb at one time or another. Back then (the 80s) coaches would tell us to actually play through it. I remember one time my coach complimenting me and saying I should play with a broken thumb all the time because I was favored arm tackling way too much, and after I busted my thumb (bent it all the way back), I began ramming my shoulder into people more.

Might sound like a dumb question but still - can you throw some light on how a cast on a broken thumb might affect a safety's performance please? Thanks!

I was actually expecting a broken wrist, with the way they threw the towel over his arm. This is actually a pleasant surprise.

I've never had a cast on my hand, but from what I've seen of players that do, is that they can't pickup fumbles or make interceptions. They can still tackle. They can get their hands on balls which is one of the defenders primary goals.

That explains why Manti Te'o plays defense.

That's a tertiary goal at most. Most important of all is for the FS to be in the same time zone as the enemy player, something Gregory is doing well this season and his young replacements (Wilson & Harmon) cannot do reliably. Play him with a cast once the bone has knitted enough, a medical judgement I cannot make.

My thumb was totally immobile in a cast for two months. When it came out, my thumb was skinnier and weaker. Football season was over. If I had to play football, I would have kept the cast on even after the bone healed. It was my right hand and so I had to do homework left handed. My thumb was covered in the cast, my four fingers were outside the cast. The cast itself came down over half my forearm. I guess he can claw at people like wolverine, or get used to trying to make one handed interceptions. But he can still be very effective. You can still tackle, break up passes. Club people over the head.

Tavon Wilson and Jake Bequette futures?

:confused2:

Do either of them have one?!?!

I know Wilson had some struggles with the deep ball as a rookie however overall I thought he had a solid freshman season in the NFL. This season he has played something like nine defensive snaps and with Gregory potentially missing some time I am hopeful he has an opportunity for retribution.

Jake Bequette I put on here for two reason; the first being that I am jealous of him as he has my dream job, he is making $480K and he gets to watch every Patriots game from the sidelines, hangout with the players and even gets to play football with them sometimes during the week. The second reason is he is an enigma to me; he seems to be best Taylor Price reenactment which is odd to me, Price was a receiver so there was always a belief his ADHD prevented him from picking up the offense, even if Bequette had something mental like that I don’t think it is as reasonable to say that about a defensive end. So what is his deal, are we all just patiently awaiting the second coming of Gino Marchetti or is he just a really good conversation to have on the sidelines?

Re: Tavon Wilson and Jake Bequette futures?

They both suck but Bill usually gives them two years. That's why they're still here.

Look for both to be gone by summer.

Both of them will be gone this offseason, most likely. What a waste of a second rounder Wilson was/is.

A cast on a broken thumb makes it much harder to scoop up a butt fumble and return it for a touchdown.
