Incognito suspended indefinitely by Dolphins

Well, first of all, it isn't officers who are drill sergeants and company commanders in armed forces boot camps.. Second of all, while I don't think racial taunting and monetary shakedowns are common, let me tell you that in boot camp (or plebe year at the academies) humiliation and verbal degradation is a regular routine. And there's a reason behind that.

yea and there shouldnt be defense for that either. unless you are just gonna accept volunteers committing suicide in the military as collateral damage? because that's a very real result of hazing in the military.

People were sure Richard Jewel was guilty
People were sure the Duke LaCross team was guilty

The examples are legion, and this board loves to moralize about the failings of non-Patriots. Shockingly, there was a lot more "Let's wait and see" about a man named Hernandez just a few months back.

Incognito will get his due process and he is entitled to it. If the facts being reported turn out to be wrong he could survive this mess without too much fuss. But I don't understand your posts about "context" and I don't think that will turn out to be relevant. Was Incongito's conduct objectively harassment? If what is being reported is true then in my opinion it pretty clearly was. The fact that it may be more common in a NFL locker room than we know, won't help him at least based on my understanding. The part where "context" arguably comes in to play is whether Martin subjectively felt harassed. At least from what I read it seems pretty clear Martin subjectively felt harassed. Incognito does seem to have a history of problems stemming pretty far back and it is hard for me to feel to sorry for him.

My guess on how this plays out is that Incognito changes tactics and makes a partial and vague admission that he made mistakes. He probably will tell the public that he is far from the only person acting this way and will seek counseling blah blah blah He may be able to hook in with another team if he plays it that way. As bad as his alleged actions were (and I think they were pretty bad) it is still much better than shooting someone...(IMO)

I'm guessing Incognito blames it on booze and does the whole finding Jesus in rehab thing...

Probably his best PR strategy.

Of course, he may be too stupid to figure that out...

Suicides in the military are not widely occurring as a result of boot camp, despite what the movie Full Metal Jacket tells you. Suicides in the military are a very real problem as a result of post traumatic stress, but that's a whole other matter.

Futhermore, speaking as someone who has been there, it really doesn't take hardly any time at all before it just bounces off of you. Yeah I was scared that first night but after being in a company of 80 men where each and every single one of us is getting the same treatment and it comes every day, it really doesn't take long for it to lose its impact.

I dunno, I guess I'm just much more mentally tough than most others because after about 24 hours of getting that treatment - and seeing everyone else was getting the same treatment - it lost all impact. Every time I was called a piece of **** I just mentally (but certainly not physically) rolled my eyes.

I have no clue how you are interpreting what I said here that would cause you to write that response. Baffling.

And yes, racism may be with us through the end of our species. The opportunity to act on racism is, however, something we are curtailing through the building of a civil society, democratic institutions, etc. And it is slowly be diminished in breadth and impact. My kids, ages 26 and 30, are so far ahead of where I was on this issue at their age, it is truly heartening.

I deal in reality. There will always be bottom feeders in every race. It will never die. No matter how you wish it to be a peaceful world.

I'm not picking on you per se (no offense)...more to the granola's that actually think that it could ever happen.

Incogweedo is one of those bottom feeders. Every race has them too.

The original intent of "hazing" was to integrate a new person into a group. We are basically tribal and when a new person shows up, there needs to be something symbolic to help ease the updating of the group membership to include the new person. Something mildly embarrassing ad subservient, as a show of commitment from the new person, is usually in order. Hence, shaving of heads, or carrying of shoulder pads. The message is, "I'm willing to give up a little of my individuality in order to join this group. So, you can trust that I'm a member and will defend the turf with you." We are, after all, still animals.

It goes badly when a current member of the group is insecure or unstable, not confident in their own membership, and projects that into the process. The intensity is increased so that the new member will remain subservient after the hazing is over, as a way for the insecure member to be dominant and thus create some security for themselves. In a way, the hazing never ends.

So "healthy" hazing has these characteristics:
  • mildly embarrassing and subservient, and keeps the new member psychologically whole
  • a clear end point when the new person is a member of the group

Great post. I know I could not have said it better.

I hope the media can tell the difference between ugly haircut day and racist threats. They often lose the subtle points.

the incident rate shouldn't be its defense since any occurrence is unacceptable.

and your assertion that the hazing is somehow uniform or egalitarian which eases its maliciousness belies the truth. That the hazing is often disproportionate and prejudicial based on individual's race.

incidents that jump to mind include Danny Chen, Brushaun Anderson, Harry Lew.

Gee, wouldn't it be great if everyone took the "reality" position like you do? At least it would probably be a great fix for the overpopulation problem. :bricks:

Thank God Martin Luther King never had your attitude. Or else, he might have just said, The Hell With It and killed himself or something.

.....back to Incognito.....

Apologies in advance if this was addressed somewhere in the previous 350 comments in this thread, but ....

Why does this keep on being characterized as 'rookie hazing', when Martin is in his second year in the NFL?

As for the Dolphins, without Martin and Incognito, Miami is without what was 40% of their starting offensive line. This for a team that was already leading the league in sacks allowed.

I don't know if this was posted before but here is transcript of a message left by Incognito :

"Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s--- in your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your f---ing mouth. [I'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."

Crazy **** happening is way more fun than debating Welker v. Amendola or another thread asking "HEY WHAT IS UP WITH THIS ONE PLAYER EVERYONE OVERHYPED IN THE OFF SEASON HE HASN'T PLAYED YET DOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION?"

I think it's time for a "Manning sucks and everyone hates the Patriots" whining session. Sorry, meant thread.

Mix that in with a little "the media is out to get us" and a pinch of "the NFL is fixed", and we have the ultimate PatsFans.com thread.

Gostkowski sucks. Shoulda kept Vinatieri.
