I was checking up on an old friend of ours and came across this....

(I realize this isn't new but there's a little nugget I never heard before.)

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Tom Brady has been "calling and texting" free agents Brandon Lloyd and Deion Branch "gauging their availability."
We're assuming Brady is doing so on behalf of Patriots management. Per Rapsheet, Branch has told Brady he's "ready whenever," but that Lloyd wants to finish shooting his zombie movie before a potential return.[\B]In case you hadn't heard, Lloyd is starring in a direct-to-DVD affair with Daniel Baldwin called "After Effect." Lloyd likely has more left in the tank than Branch, but was a fading player last season and a locker-room lawyer. The fact that he's back on the Patriots' radar speaks to their lack of faith in their rookie wideouts. Sep 22 - 11:20 AM[\QUOTE]

The key here is he wanted to finish a movie first (who can blame him, take half the season off Nd get paid more doing so)
Originally reports were saying he's not interested, which doesn't appear to be the case. Considering the DVD just finished this month, maybe Lloyd is getting in game shape for a possible return?

I realize I'm taking a long shot by wondering this but it makes me wonder. I really can't see bb expecting this receiving core to suddenly have an All star emerge this year. By adding a vet like Lloyd it helps the offense tremendously and takes less heat off the rooks. At this point it would be a dream addition.

I'm just saying, if Lloyd was available it would make much more sense for this team to bring him back then trade a pick for a possible one year stint, we know how bb loves those picks. If bb could manage to pull it off along with the added dl depth, barring no more big boos boos this team would be ready to take on anybody. I'm not saying i expect this to happen or to get your own hopes up. But it just makes alot of sense to me.

Because bb just sticking with whats not working does not. The rooks need a vet to mentor them Nd take some pressure off. I'm not saying I'm dissapointed with the rooks but its simply not a dependable offense at this point. We only fixed issues on d by making a move. Hopefully the same happens on offense

Phew, what a relief. When I clicked this I thought it would be anoter "Mallet to Cleveland for Gordon and a pick!" or Randy Moss thread. Glad to hear it's just Brandon Lloyd.

No. The rookies are getting better. It's been Brady as of the last few weeks that were missing them more than the rookies dropping balls and fudging up routes.

Our rookie WRs have already mastered Brandon Lloyds ability to fall down while catching the ball thus minimizing YAC, so Lloyd would bring nothing to the table.

And if I've got the wrong Lloyd, the other Lloyd is dead.
Just so you know.

I don't understand this rookies getting better.

The drops are slowing down but thompkins is slowing down a little and although becoming a playmaker, Dobson isn't dependable yet for 60 minutes to be the man. Amendola would be huge if he could regain form hopefully a few healthy weeks will do it. But still, you don't have that dependable outside target.

There's no playing time available for Lloyd. He'd be inactive every game and take up valuable space on the roster.

I thought once the Sanders signing was matched by the Steelers and the AH debacle happened, that Lloyd should have been brought back.

And you're probably right in your thinking. All accounts pointed to NE offering him a chance at returning, but for a lessened role for less money. In other words, we were going to replace the WR2 no matter what, as he was a liability in that specific setting; but he could have offered something as a possession receiver, especially with Welker moving on and the injuries/situations that took place by the 3rd week of June with Hernandez/Gronkowski. There's just a part of me that wonders if they weren't trying pretty hard to bring at least ONE familiar face or veteran here, so that they didn't have all of these rookies at once.

Llyod's lack of speed, ability to beat man coverage (something that Thompkins seems to be currently struggling with all of a sudden himself), failure to gain YACs, and tendency to fall down all made the WR2 position in need of an upgrade.

I think he gambled on himself a bit by turning down whatever cheap pact the Pats offered him, and did not receive any attention. Either that or he just decided to try his hand at the movie career and already figured that he has enough money. There's little chance that he would be returning now though.

You're right, this is old news. Very old news. It was reported after the NYJ game in week 2 when the offense struggled, but we have no idea if it's true or not. Even if it's true, these calls could have been made in the summertime and not recently.

Tom Brady stated during his presser that week that he had not called or reached out to either player if I'm not mistaken, so it may be nothing more than media fabrication; or at best some minor feelers that occurred way back during OTAs or the beginning of the summer.

On a more important note---this is one of the reasons why they brought in Collie, whose reps have increased in every game that he's played here. He's working hard to try and learn the offense (which goes to show you how ridiculous any of the fan fabricated rumors of bringing in a WR were), having claimed to be spending 3 hrs a day before/after practice with all of Brady, McDaniels and Chad O'Shea (WR coach).

On top of that, Gronk is back and Amendola is healthier. I don't think many people realize the severity of Amendola's injury, and that the Pats have been limiting his reps in the past 2 games since he has returned. That should change when they return from the bye in week 11, and I think we see something a lot closer to the Amendola that we saw in week 1 than the one we've seen lately.

WE DON'T NEED A WR!!!!

Amendola, Edelman, collie, thompkins and dobson with gronk and Hooman are absolutely adequate to run an elite offense. Add vereen as another option and we have a offense that can strike anywhere any time. It's now at the point where they have to gel (now they will be on field together) and keep Tom upright.

Also, how do you expect a receiver to get on the same page as Tom, and learn the playbook in 3 weeks? You CAN'T do that with this offense.
We have am average offense that's climbing the ranks. Expect them to be putting out more points and drives with td's after the bye. They already have improved to average.

If you Watch the games, you will notice dobson's role is increasing and he is becoming a dependable down the field target. There is a reason why he passed KT. It's because he is improving fast, and if Tom would give him a chance (not locking onto gronk) Dobson would have way better states.

Dobson is the wr that we've needed. And he is improving in his hands and route running.
Dobson is our stud deep threat because he is a stud.

It's over a month old and it was implicitly debunked back when it was originally floated out there. The team's situation is dramatically different now than it was in week 2.

If he goes another couple of games without a drop, I think his role is likely to expand. He put himself in the hole early in the season, but if he can string together a couple consecutive games like this past week's, I'm sure Brady will take notice.

Wait! You're a Deus sock puppet, right?

So you just got off that island in New Zealand and want to know how September is going?

EXACTLY! This is just another example of Rappaport making it up as he goes along. At the beginning of the season the mediots took a "how's it going" text from Brady to one of his best friends, and turned it into a "desperate plea" for WR help. OF COURSE Branch gave a "I'm ready if they call" comment. Who wouldn't. It wasn't real news, when the mediots made a big deal about it at the beginning of the season and it certainly isn't now. The morally corrupt Rappaport is just recycling an old story because he doesn't have the chops to dig up stories on his own. Recycling stories is what he's best at. Its just a shame he gets paid for it.

The bad news is that this non-story is going to be rehashed every time the offense has a bad game. So be prepared to see it reprised again as the season goes along.
