This team doesn’t need to win a Super Bowl to make us proud…

Don't forget that we lost Kyle Love and Danny Woodhead! I'm so proud of this team for being 5-1 with the obstacles they have had to overcome.

I see no reason to lower expectations, even with the injuries. Losing Wilfork and probably Mayo for the year sucks, and yes it hurts the versatility of the defense, to lose the player who was basically the anchor the entire defense revolved around (Wilfork), and the one who was the brain of the operation (Mayo). But the NFL is funny. Devastating injuries occur, but teams that really have it together find ways to keep rolling. That's how I feel about this Patriots defense. Now, if Talib was out for the year, then I'd be freaking out a little. But still, I recall a quote from Manning after the '04-'05 divisional loss, where he noted how with most opponents you get excited when they lost key players. But not the Patriots.

Honestly, I feel better about this year's team than last season's. That's not just cause the record is obviously better. There was just something funky about that team all last year, it was probably the ultimate stereotypical post-07 Pats team: could rack up a lot of points in runaway games, but could have a glass jaw in crunch time. We already know this team isn't that.

Last paragraph sums it up in a way I was looking for. Yeah, last year I got to feel great about The Pats for exactly 6 days. The 6 between the Houston Monday night win and the 49ers rout the following Sunday night. And don't tell me that The Pats came all the way back, 'cause they got their doors blown off in a way that's totally unacceptable. After that game, most knew they didn't have what it took to go all the way.
This year's team doesn't have that quality... or lack of, rather.

Have never seen a longitudinal study of the impact of going deep into the playoffs and the incidence of major injury the following season..

Although my observations are anecdotal, it seems apparent this season..

It was week 6 last season when the Ravens believed they lost their best corner Lardarius Webb and Ray Lewis for the season. Lewis would eventually return for the play-offs, although his replacement Jameel McClain would also end up on the IR before he did. Terrell Suggs missed 6 games and was a shadow of himself, Haloti Ngata played injured and nowhere near his usual dominant self, and the Ravens somehow found a way to win it all.

In 2011, the Packers lost starting RB Ryan Grant, TE Jermichael Finley, their RT, 1 of their starting safeties, and 3 of their 4 starting LBs by the time they won the Super Bowl.

Teams can overcome injuries and still win Super Bowls. In fact, recent history proves it. So while Mayo and Wilfork are huge losses, I concede nothing. With BB and TB, we always have a chance. Next man up.

I was thinking about 2011 Packers when I ur post. Didn't they have like 16 players on IR that season and still ended up winning it all. Just get into playoffs and get hot. How many times have we seems getting hot at the right time and winning it all in last few years. Let's hope Pats can overcome all these injuries.

Injuries have *****ED us over the past 2 years! This is the 3rd and I'm tired of it! I know I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses but I'd definitely bet on the following...

If we had Gronk in the SuperBowl there's no doubt we win that.
If we have Gronk in the AFCG last year + Talib to shut down Boldin - we go to the SuperBowl again.

And I'm sure I don't have to remind you have this years injuries (already listed in OP anyway)

It's starting to feel like a special season - backs up against the wall, everything going against the team and yet they STILL find a way to win, the defense has been dominant, the offense just put up a season high points.

This team has things the last 3 or 4 Patriots haven't - adversity to overcome and a legit defense.

I 5-starred this thread.

Unbelievable what this team has done so far short-handed.

The only thing that gives me pause is that they already have lost so much personnel and the regular season isn't even 38% in. How much more key personnel can they lose?

The FO needs to bring in some reinforcements.

Vereen will be back, Gronk - who knows?, Armstead, NT's, hell - - suit up Bruschi and tell him to put on some weight again......;)

still early...lets wait until end of year...but still surprised at this team being 5-1 with these injuries and lack of talent on O

Don't need to win it for us to be proud of them. but it would sure be nice.

Maybe this will be an unpopular opinion, but I couldn't care less about moral victories. I'm also not quite sure we are at the point of being proud of overcoming the adversity. We have beaten one very good team on a last second score. I expect TB and BB to beat the likes of the Jets, Bills, Bucs, and what now looks like a very bad Falcon team regardless of the injury situation.
The real challenge hasn't happened, it is yet to happen. We have won 1 game without Wilfork and 0 without Mayo or Talib yet.
I'm not saying this doesn't look like a tough gritty squad, but we seem to be giving them credit for winning without guys who just got injured, and somehow have lowered the bar to moral victories because of injuries. The goal is the SB just like every other year, and if we fall short, I won't feel better about it because I can blame it on injuires,

The Atlanta game doesn't really count as "with Wilfork," either. :(

People seem to be writing off the Atlanta win.

folks. Atlanta weren't beaten at home in a long time until we did it.

Its a big achievement. END OF STORY.

And they lost at home to the Jets too. They are 1-4.
It APPEARED to be a big achievement but upon further review, not so much.

Hopefully all these feel good thoughts are carried over to the gameday thread.

As long as #12 is upright and able to throw the football, the Patriots will be in contention. End of story. The defense is likely to take a step back with Mayo and Wilfork out, but we still have plenty of talented players on that side of the ball. And, thankfully, we have the depth at LB to patch up things at that spot (DT? Not so much).

The good news is the offense will get two key cogs back over time in Gronk and Vereen. And I always believe a Belichick-coached team will be more prepared and more in-sync come December than they were in September.

So, to put it simply, my expectations are still a Super Bowl for this team. I wouldn't call them favorites, but I will still be disappointed if they fail to win it all. Every year we have Brady playing 16 games is a season we should be in close running for a title.

I think if we step back any analyze all the facts then we have a long way to go...and not a 5-1 "long way to go" when we are playing lights out and our offense is firing on all cylinders...but a 5-1 long way to go cause we are not at all capitalizing on our opportunities and our defense, especially now with the injuries, are not near strong enough to win games against good teams.

We have a LONG way to go.

I have pretty much always been proud of this team, esp, in the Kraft era. It is a sporting business that is run with professionalism, efficiency and accountability and of those things I am proud...

Who do they have to beat for us to stop hearing this nonsense.

Hopefully all these feel good thoughts are carried over to the gameday thread.

We all know that game threads are a place where logic and reason fly out the window.
