Saints Come Marchin In......

I'm not sold on the idea of depending on Spikes on the field against a speedy team that relies heavily on the passing game and getting its running back open in space.

I'm not either. I would think that we'll be seeing more Hightower/Collins in this week's game myself.

The real test will be if either one of Kelly (replacement of Nebitt, to go along with Chris Jones and Joe Vellano as our DT's) or Buchanan (replacement of Bequette at sub package DE) misses the game. I'm more worried about that aspect.

While the pats defense is improved the Saints are almost unstoppable on offense. Saints will get their points so if the pats want to win they need to score over 30 points. Of course this offense is so bad right now, and even with Gronk playing, I don’t see them scoring the 40 points they need.

fixed it for you...

The Pats will need more than 30 to win this game, closer to 40 IMO

This game won't rival last weeks Broncos/Cowboys scoring total but it should be around 65-80 points total.

If the offense plays like last week then half the stadium should be empty by halftime.

If ever there was a game so far this season that the team needs to stick to the running game, it's this one. Move the chains by running the football and setting up the play action. Don't pull this crap with benching your best runner when they fumble, either. When the coaching staff does that, they're cutting their noses off to spite their face. Defensively, I have no clue whatsoever how this team is going to contain Jimmy Graham.

Makes sense to me. Fill the field with little, fast guys and if they turn to a power game I'm thrilled. If Kelly and Buchanan don't play, what is left of the pass rush takes a hit. I expect the defense to give a number of looks with lots of coverage. I'm thinking Graham frequently gets a LB re-route and a DB over the top. Too bad Fletcher has disappeared and Collins has not progressed more quickly. Huge challenge for the D this week needing lots of help from an offense coming off an historically bad showing. Leaning heavily on Ridley, Amendola and Gronk.

Hard to understand the pats being favored in this game. I'm tempted to take the saints and the points, sorry guys.

I see Brees having a career day, most QBs do pretty well.

Last I checked pats were favored by 3. I know the pats are great at home but the way this offense is playing its surprising they are favored.

Helloooo Pat's fans.

A lurking Saints fan here. Just thought I'd stick my nose into this conversation.

1st I just wanted to thank you guys for such a great site. I come here from time to time, especially during the draft because you guys have some great posters who do good evals that help me with compiling mock drafts. Also, the times we practiced with you guys during training camp, I liked coming here to get your fan's view of things.

Anyway, from point of view, this game has me very nervous. It's a tough task to try to beat New England, but to try to beat them in Foxborough, coming off a tough loss? Yikes.

As a football fan though, I am looking forward to this game. 2 of the greatest football minds playing chess this Sunday with Sean Payton vs Bill Belichick.
How those guys adjust to what the other is doing will be key in this game. Most games I always give the coaching edge to Sean Payton, but Bill has done it for too long for me to say that.

A lot of Saints fans think this could be a redux of the 2009 MNF game we played against you guys, but no way. We are in your house, plus your defense is much much better than it was then.

I expect Gronk to play, and that will be a huge boost for your offense.

I am interested to see how BB decides to defend Jimmy Graham, and how Rob Ryan handles Tom Brady, especially if Brady goes no-huddle.

Rob also likes to play a lot of 4-2-5, which is pretty easy to run against. I wouldnt be suprised if you guys run it up the gut quite a bit.

I dont know how they will handle Gronk if he does play, we havent had to deal with a TE of his caliber yet this year. Our ILB's arent the most dynamic atheletes, good down hill thumpers. We use a lot of 3 safety sets, with Jenkins and Vaccaro lining up all over. Vaccaro has been used at just about every position save for DT. Both him and Jenkins have cornerback skill sets, so that has helped us in coverage especially against TE's and slot recievers.

Keenan Lewis has been very good at CB, Greer has had struggles due to his small size. So I would put the big WR on him.

Saints offensive line has been "OK" but far from stellar. They've struggled with stunts and delayed blitzes. Jahri Evans has been injured so he hasnt played at his normal All-Pro level. Our run game has been pretty terrible, so we've done a lot of short passes for ball control. We will still run the ball, but I dont think you guys have to worry about big run plays.

If you look at the stats, you would think Jimmy Graham is our only reciever. But dont let that fool you, if BB can scheme away Graham, then Colston, Stills, Meachem, and Toon can be very productive. Sproles too depending on how Sean decides to use him and how he is matched up.

Everyone knows how to stop Drew Brees. Gut pressure up the middle, clog throwing lanes, and play disciplined in the secondary. If safeties start biting on play action, or letting Brees munipulate them with his eyes, he will eat you up.

Should be a great game guys!!

Watch our old boy Ben Watson get in the mix with a few catches, while everyone is looking to stop Graham,Watson may sneak in for a few chain movers.

Watson have "stone":bricks: for hands not worried about him at all.

It feels like forever ago when the initial reports came out about him only missing 2-3 games at most. I assume it was much more muscle building/conditioning than injury concern, or they wouldn't even have had him practicing.

My thinkin too that with his injury it slowed his process to hit weight training & conditioning. That too is big along with healing process to go out and compete in game shape and him feelin confident.

Welcome, good points and thanx for insight.
We all know about Brees & Co. and what they are capable of doin. This time around I feel much more confident in Pats Defense. I'm not sayin they will shut you down but in'da past our D was a Wing & a Prayer that it was answered with an INT or Incompletion literally holdin our collective breathes while ball was in air.
Interesting to see which way BB uses Talib. Gonzalez had his way with us in Atl. As you saw we had him defensed on goal line like Gunners on a punt. Graham reminds me of a BIG TE/WR. Another guy is Sproles, he can be used so many ways. Quick screens, 3rd downs.
Funny how things turn out. It was usually our Offense that was stacked and our D was hurtin now roles have reversed short term until we get everyone back and insync would good to have all 3 Phases workin together.

Lookin forward to a good game, Injury Free for both teams.

Welcome WhoDat. Tough to understand your anxiety.
We all wait for Godot--err Gronk--to return, but if he does he will not have played football in nearly a year so expecting a big impact seems like a stretch. Our other TEs need not be defended.

If Graham gets into the secondary we have only one guy--Talib--who can defend him. I expect him to be covered by a LB at the LOS. No worries on the no huddle--Patriots can't run the no huddle because Tom needs to diagram the plays for the rookie WRs.

Rob also likes to play a lot of 4-2-5, which is pretty easy to run against. I wouldnt be suprised if you guys run it up the gut quite a bit.

From your lips... Our coaches are congenitally allergic to run commitment.

We will try, but with Wilfork on IR and Kelly not practicing with a bum knee, our push up the middle now comes from a couple of UDFAs who until a couple months ago were planning careers in sales and fast food. That said, this is the NFL. Any given Sunday.

Should be a great game guys!!

Enjoy the game. Looking forward to seeing your team.

Your offense will be fine. Looks to me like simple execution problems, not lack of talent. Thompkins looks to have the skillset of a very good reciever, same for Dobson, who I liked coming out of Marshall. His problem has always been being a consistent catcher though. We had the same issues last year with Payton on suspension. Guys dropping passes like crazy and poor execution. It got better over time though but unfortunetly our laughing stock of a defense couldnt hold teams under 30 points.

Amendola is tough matchup, I expect for him to have success. He will probably get matched on Vaccaro quite a bit, who has played well in coverage, but is still young.

Defensively, you guys look fast and atheltic. Loved Jamie Collins coming out. Wanted him so bad but GODdell took our 2nd rounder  How has he panned out so far?

Collins has looked like a rookie. Doesn't play much...mostly just passing situations when he does play. Hopefully he develops. Would really like them to use him as a pass rusher, but seem to be using him as a coverage LB. Maybe he plays quite a bit Sunday.

How has Vaccaro been? Know he's a rookie but loved him coming out.

Our defense looks very good early...but Saints offense is one of the very best. Brees has just been loaded with weapons for years. Really wish Kraft and BB would give Brady those kinds of weapons. I'm not taking anything away from Brees as I believe he is a great player, great QB, great leader...but he is a guy who has had the luxury of A) playing in a dome for virtually his entire career and B) having ridiculous WR's who can go deep.

Brady on the other hand, with the exception of a few years (Moss era)...has mostly had scrubs at WR...and middle of the field TE's. Would have loved to see what Brady's career stats would look like if he had Brees' tools for all these years.

BornNraisedWhoDat a quick question on the Saints run defense. They're giving up 5.4 YPC which puts them dead last in the league. I know numbers like this can be deceptive. Have they just given up some garbage time yards or perhaps one or two hugs gains that skew the average? Or have teams just not remained patient enough with the run? They're 18th in rush yards per game.

Thanks for stopping by and providing some insight from the other sideline. I agree with, or can at least understand, everything you said except for the bolded statement above. I believe Dobson had ZERO drops his last season in college, he was known as a hands guy from everything I've seen.

This could get ugly on Sunday. Saints are legit. Patriots are a fraudulent 4-1. The offense is on the brink of irretrievable horridness.

If the Buccaneers and the Falcons can keep that Saints offense under control, we should be able to do the same, right ? Most of the Saints touchdowns come either in the second or the third quarter. If we can stay on the game for the first three quarters, then we have a legit shot at pulling the upset.

This is the first time in 10 years that I would not be surprised if we got blown out.
